Presidential Palace: Ho Chi Minh's Relic Area - House on Stilts
  • Tip Rating:
  • Housed within the Ho Chi Minh's Relic Area, less than 3 minutes walk from the Presidential Palace, is the "House on Stilts". This is where President Ho lived on and off from 1958 to 1969. The house was built in the style of Vietnam's ethnic minorities and has been well-maintained today. There was a beautiful koi pond nearby and I was told that President Ho used to clap his hands to call the fish to him so that he could feed them. During his presidential years, he would also invite students from various parts of Vietnam to his "House on Stilts" for chit-chat and to share his wisdom to them. It is evident that till today, he still lives in the hearts of many.

    Geological Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Why not look at some rocks ? There are even rubies. . . . . Those who know me, know I have some links with rocks and mountains, I will not be technical! The geological museum of Hanoi is mainly designed for natural history students, and the displays are like in old museums, with show windows, drawers, lots of rocks, minerals and fossils with their name, where they come from, chemical composition. . . etc. . . For the tourist more interesting (euh, I guess!), are explanations about composition of our planet, the place of the planet in the universe, volcanism, earthquakes, and may be natural resources. It is all a bit old fashioned but I liked to walk around, remember my old student days. There are very few spectacular minerals, but. . . . . . . there is a small shop!! In this shop, located at the entrance of the museum (for those who do not wish to visit the dusty two storey museum) it is possible to buy gemstones or minerals, raw or cut and polished, at prices challenging any competition! Rubies, of course (Viet Nam has a local production), spinels and garnets, amethyst, beryls and aquamarines, black tektites and other. For rubies, the prices start at 5 US$, but I will not guarantee the gem quality; if you think of a gift to bring back from Viet Nam, you may consider it.

    Snake Wine For Virility
  • Tip Rating:
  • Check out the many shops selling snake wine and other locally produced potions & lotions... one wonders how they get those reptiles in there to begin with! Other than snakes, you can also get lizards, geckos, scorpions, and other such potent creatures in these bottles... Apparently, the expats in Hanoi tell me that much fun is to be had with these drinks at a weekend ***-up! I don't even wanna know...

Opera House: Elegant French Colonial Opera House
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Hanoi Opera is a stunningly beautiful building, and one of the few positive things that ever came out of French colonialism. It was built by the French in 1911 and modelled on Paris' famed Palais Garnier. We stayed at the Hilton Opera, directly adjacent to the Opera itself, and our room had a great view of the building. But the highlight came one night when Fidel Castro was in town and made a visit to the Opera. We waited outside for over an hour until Castro came out, and we were able to get a glimpse of him being whisked away in his limo. Seeing Fidel Castro in Vietnam had to be the most Communist experience that I can possibly imagine.

During my visit in Hanoi, I have the opportunity to explore the city highlights such as the Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum. In the tradition of Lenin and Mao, the final resting place of Ho Chi Minh, also known as “Uncle Ho”, is a glass sarcophagus set deep inside the Mausoleum. A local guide told me that everyday, many Vietnamese and visitors would queue up to pay respect to Ho Chi Minh. It was a great pity that during my visit, the Mausoleum was closed as Ho Chi Minh’s embalmed body went to Russia for maintenance. However, rumours have it that his body is no longer sent to Russia but remained in Hanoi for secret maintenance. Other rumours also said that at times, only the wax body of him was used. Well, the rumours have not be certified, so it's up to you to believe it or not! *wink*

The art of water puppetry is unique to the areas surrounding the Red River (Song Hong) and not to be missed when you are in Hanoi. It used to be pratised by rice farmers in flooded paddy fields for centuries, and is handed down from generation to generation. Basically, this involves wooden puppets manipulated by bamboo wooden sticks hidden beneath the water which depict stories of Vietnamese folk tales and daily life. This exciting performance also comes with special effects such as smoke and mini-fireworks, plus traditional music played by old folks. The most famous water puppet show in Hanoi is located at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre located at the north-east end of Ho Hoan Kiem (Lake of Restored Sword) and the daily showtimes are 5.15 pm, 6.30 pm and 8 pm. The counter closes at 6.45 pm to 7.30 pm. First class seat cost 40,000 VND (about US$2.5) and second class seat cost 20,000 VND (because the seats are so cheap, they can be fully booked fairly quickly so you need to buy them in advance). I wanted to come here to watch the water puppet show, but in the end do not need because the Vietnamese host of my meeting brought the delegates to the Museum of Ethnology and watch the water puppet show from there instead. More photos of the water puppet show are at the travelogue section of this VT page.

One pillar pagoda: A Pagoda With One Pillar
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yeah, that's it basically. The One Pillar Pagoda is often mentioned to be one of Hanoi's most beautiful pagodas. It's okay, but there are several other pagodas that are more interesting. The One Pillar Pagoda is just next to the mausoleum, standing on one pillar in a little dirty pond. My tip: Go there, take a quick picture, and escape the vendors and guides...

All i can feel is I'm bigger here ( cause the lane is small ) .After doing this zig zag way, you come to the open air of the old French building, looking down right at the main street of Hanoi - Trang Tien st. The decoration is nice with some beautiful paintings on the wall. Food is available here as well. Price : drinks start at 8 000 VND ( 0.5 $ )

  • Address: 2 Nguyen Xi st., Hanoi
  • Phone: 04.9364111
  • Directions: On Trang Tien street, you will the 5 floor bookstore. next to it is the small street for motorbikes parking. The cafe on the left.

Also known as Huong Pagoda. The trek up to the Pagoda is about 4 km, slippery and hot if you are doing it in May-Jun. Good news is that there is now a cable car operating - abt 30,000 Dong one-way. I chose to trek up to experience the "old way" of walking to the Pagoda and you get to see beautiful scenary and some temples along the trek. Coming down by cable car to have another aerial view of the area.
