Temple of Literature: Seat of learning--Temple of Literature
  • Tip Rating:
  • In it, you can find a temple built in 1070 to worship the Philosopher Confucius and an institute established in 1076 to teach the doctrines of Confucius. The temple of literature testifies the cultural heritage from China and represents independence and national culture and values. You can see a mixture of Vietnamese and Chinese influences on its architecture. Its 82 stone diplomas with tortoises were erected between 1484 and 1780 to bear the names of its 1306 Laureates. Some parts of the temple were destroyed during the War and was reconstructed but as a whole, it still tells the original story. Admission fee is 5000VND and an English brouchure is 3000VND. It opens daily from 8am to 5pm.

  • Address: Quoc Tu Giam Street
  • Phone: (844) 845 2917
  • Directions: Drop at Tran Quy Cap Station(train) and walk along Nguyen Khuyen. At the T-junction, turn left into Van Mieu and then turn right at Quoc Tu Giam. Or from the station, take a cyclo for about 10 000 VND.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Mausoleum is where Uncle Ho's embalmed body lies inside a glass case.

Each year in early autumn, his body will be flown to Moscow for maintenance.

It opens from 0800 to 1100 from tue to thu and over the weekends.

The place seems so peaceful and quiet, I guess they wanted Unlce Ho to RIP.

We heard that the house of Uncle Ho has been dismolished.

We were fortunate to witness the changing of guards ceremony. We saw the guards just marching by.

This building is a « must see » in Hanoi, and you will not be disappointed by this classical-baroque-art nouveau building and even feel a bit of French atmosphere, as it was built in 1911 by architects Broger and Harloy as a small copy of the Opéra Garnier (the Paris Opera house) in the centre of the French quarter of Hanoi. From far it looks like, but the decoration of the copy, built with white and yellow painted stones is way not as “rich” as the original.
It has been restored with the help of the French government in 1997; it is indeed a nice view from the streets, day or night, with wide open space around.
When there are no performances it is closed and even not possible to walk in the garden on the north western side; in the gardens of the south eastern side is a garden café you can enter only if you tell the watchman you want to have a drink or snack; from there it is possible to have a closer look at architectural details; the “art deco” glass awnings on the side entrances (picture3) are stylish! The coloured tile friezes (Picture4), or the campanile on the roof give this building some character. Best to enjoy this building might be to look from far first, then have a drink in the nearby café and take time to look at details.
I wish you have the luck to look inside if you pass by, I only could look through the glass doors of the main entrance and it looks quite “chic” inside (Main picture), with the red carpet, marble stairs, flowers. . . .

The French and Austrian embassies organised a performance of the Magic Flute with local artists in 2006; I would have liked to listen and to watch such a performance. I link you to the Queen of the Night, waiting for a new opportunity to have the live performance (click on 04). (I know, on hi fi it would be better!)

The Temple of Literature is Vietnam’s historical seat of learning and is the most sacred place for the disciples of Confucius. It is one of the few remaining buildings from the original city founded by Emperor Ly Thanth Tong in the 11th century and is a well-preserved example of Vietnamese architecture. It became the site of the country’s first university in 1076. Consisting of a complex of small buildings and five walled courtyards, it was an exclusive establishment teaching the principles of Confucius. Over a period of 900 years thousands of Vietnamese scholars graduated from the university.

Legend has it that scholars composed poems while drinking wine at The Khuc Van Cac Pavillion pictured here.

Opening time: Open daily from 7.30am to 6pm (summer), and 8am to 5pm (winter)

Admission: 12,000d, and 20,000d for an English-speaking guide

Walking arround: Early Morning in Hanoi
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vietnamese people start their day pretty early. I know it might ruin the feeling of being on vacation if I say you should try to wake up around 5.30am to see a different side of Hanoi. The streets are turned to be a fresh market. People come out and buy stuff to prepare their breakfast or meals for the day. I think it's nice.

One pillar pagoda: One Pillar Pagoda

  • The One Pillar Pagoda (Chua Mot Cot) was built in 1955. The pillar is made of Concrete and the structure on top is made of wood. The previous building was burned in 1954 by the French when they withdrew from Vietnam.

Chua Mot Cot was constructed to celebrate the tale of the heirless Emperor Ly Thai Tong, who dreamt about receiving a son from the Buddhist goddess of mercy and compassion, seated on a lotus flower. He married shortly after and bore a son, and the pagoda was built to honour the event. It is the most interesting of the city’s numerous pagodas, and beneath the ornate curved roof people come to pray for fertility and wellbeing, with allegedly miraculous effects. The unique wooden structure was designed to resemble a lotus flower, the Buddhist representation of enlightenment, emerging out of the water, with the single stone pillar its symbolic stalk.

Get your hair cut on the streets.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Why not after all? Thousands of people get their hair cut that way every day in this city! Sorry, ladies, it is not a tip for you; ladies here , like in other places go to the salon. Hair dressers (cutters seems more appropriate!) are found in many streets of Hanoi, in generally not too crowded places, as they need a bit place around their “workshop”, and hair cutting is a relaxing moment for the customer; so relatively quiet places , but it can be on big avenues, parks, near the lakes very often; in fact you cannot miss them and for 2 U.S, you can get a fresh cut; no guarantee it fits your expectations, once its cut, its done, if it is not what you like, it is too late. . . . . In almost all places in Asia or Africa I visited, I got my hair cut, and never had to complain, except about the length may be. . . . And here, getting the hair cut with the traffic noise as background music is an interesting experience. . . . as is interesting to sit nearby workshops repairing bikes or cars, mixed with food shops. . .

  • Directions: You see hairdressers in many places; walk and you will see.
