This is an monolithic edifice with draconian security measures and [usually] a long line. No purses, no cameras, no breathing almost!! When I was there in December 2003 they had a metal detector to go through.

Uncle Ho looked peaceful and pink and not real at all!

This is where Ho Chi Minh lived and worked rather than use the Presidential Palace. This is Nha Bac Ho a simple wooden house on stilts near the palace. Ho used the small rooms upstairs as his living quarters and study.

Ho Chi Minh is venerated as a national hero and father of the republic. Though he requested cremation, they have built him a "sovietic style" mausoleum, that includes also a palace, museum , some parks, a traffic-free area...
Admission free. You may find long queues, mostly locals, to see embalmed corpse of Uncle Ho.

An imposing building for such a humble man, it is an experience to queue (no handbags, cameras allowed) to pass before the embalmed body of Uncle Ho and to observe the veneration and grief displayed by many Vietnamese for the founder of the modern nation. In the grounds are also to be found his simple home and a museum devoted to his life.

Ho Chi Minh was embalmed and put on display. A visit to the mausoleum is a somber experience. The guards are not terribly friendly and ask you even to take off your sun glasses. Uncle Ho looks a little yellow, but the quiet line that forms to view his body is a vision of respect. The mausoleum is open only in the mornings, every day except Monday and Friday 8am-11am
the surrounding parklands containing the former Palais du Gouvernement

It is 21 m high and in Vietnamese grey marble and granite. Like a lotus flower it was erected right at the historical place of Ba Dinh where President Ho Chi Minh declared the independence for Vietnam in 1945.

A visit to Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum is definitely a must see while visiting Hanoi. Fortunately I was here on May Day to witness thousands of Vietnamese making the pilgrimage to pay their respect to Uncle Ho.

For every history lovers, the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum is the place where this important personage of the Vietnamese independence toward France is kept frozen for the public to see. (Just like Mao in China and Lenine in Russia) He is the hero of the revolution!

Here I am outside the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. I see dead people... In the tradition of Lenin,Stalin and Mao,the final resting place of Uncle Ho is a glass sarcophagus set deep inside this building that has become a pilgimage site.
The mausoleum is open to the public on Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday and Saturday mornings from 8 to 11 am. On Sunday and public holidays it is open from 7.30 to 11.30 am. The mausoleum is closed 2 months a year (usually from Sept. to Nov.) while Uncle Ho's embalmed corpse is in Russia for maintenance and make-up.

Viewing Ho Chi Minh's preserved corpse!
Do I really have to tell you? Isn't everyone fascinated at the sight of a famous dead guy??
Well, I'll tell you this....Ho is glowing red, he looks very cold, he's dressed in his best Vietnamese garb, he obviously suffered from male pattern baldness, and his trade mark beard looks just as it does in every picture you may have ever seen of him. Oh, his body is sent off to Russia between September & December so he can have tea with Lennin's preserved corpse (I think he's really there for a little freshening up by the same Russian mummifiers who help keep Lennin looking good).
