Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: Ho Chi Minh's House
This is where Ho Chi Minh lived and worked rather than use the Presidential Palace. This is Nha Bac Ho a simple wooden house on stilts near the palace. Ho used the small rooms upstairs as his living quarters and study.

This was strange. First of all, I felt like I was doing something wrong by visiting this "monument". It was probably because I served in the Army under guys who had fought in Vietnam. Second...it was just wierd. Lines of foreign tourists stand silently in a cold (40 degrees) room and look at a body. The body does not appear real. Locals say that it is not real, but rather wax. It looks like wax. Around the body there are uniformed soldiers whose only job is to shush onlooking tourists. You get your brief look and then file out. The rediculous thing is: Ho Chi Mihn did not want to be on display like Lenin, he wanted to be buried.

Though there are huge lines to see the wax-like body of 'Uncle Ho', the lines move fast. Plus, for the brief time you're allowed to linger in the building, the airconditioning is fabulous!

Unfortunately when I visited Uncle Ho was away in Moscow for his annual maintenance trip so we couldn't go inside. The square in front of the mausoleum is used for parades and ceremonial events

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum
Well, I didn't make it here before closing time on my last day, so I didn't get to go inside. But Ho Chi Minh himself is in there, in a clear box so you can see him in the Flesh! I've seen V.I. Lenin and Chairman Mao in the same manner.... What is it with these communist revolutionaries??? Open from 9am to 11am; Tue-Sun. Prepare to wait in a long, yet quick moving, line.

What is it about communists that they have to have their founding fathers stuffed and put on display? Uncle Ho wanted to be cremated and have his ashes buried in parks around the country. Instead, upon his death in 1969, he was stuffed and placed in a large Soviet style mound of concrete. That said, the Soviets did make impressive mounds of concrete and this one is no exception. Also notable is the reverence that the Vietnamese visitors have for this man which actually makes seeing him a moving experience, even though he looks like a wax figure. Uncle Ho is on display most days before noon. Respectful dress is required and pictures are forbidden within the mausoleum. Check with your hotel for a full list of rules.
