    Hoan kiem lake is a beutiful lake in the centre of Hanoi's Old Quarter. It is surrounded by trees and park benches. In the morning the locals do Tai Chi in the shrouding mist. We came here everyday while we were in Hanoi and it was my favourite place.

    In the heart of the Old Town of Hanoi is Hoen Kiem Lake. It is a peaceful and serene lake where young Vietnamese meet and stroll. Hoen Kiem Lake is the Lake of the Restored Sword. The name is derived from a legend involving Emperor Le Thai To, in which he came across a giant tortoise while cruising on the lake. The tortoise took his sword that had secured victory against the Chinese aggressors of the Minh Dynasty. The emperor named the lake after this episode. In the middle of the lake is a pagoda - the Tortoise Pagoda. At the northern end of the lake is the Ngoc Son Temple, connected by a red wooden bridge. The lake is a perfect place to take a stroll at night after dinner or after a day of shopping in the Old Quarter.

    It's the largest lake in Hanoi (I think) and you can go for boat rides. It's nice to sit by the lake and read or if you want, there's a bar on the east side of the lake where they serve good beer and snacks.

    Its hard to miss Hoan Kiem Lake as it is situated in the middle of everything. You will for sure pass by this lake for more than once.

    Just in the center of Hanoi, this lake contains two islands: one with the Ngoc Son Temple, another one (no access) with Tortoise Tower. The legend about a sword and a turtle, that gives the name to the lake, is found in every guidebook, and I will not repeat it here. The lake is fun to walk around: with the exception of the North end, the shore is very quiet and is a good contrast to downtown Hanoi. The Tortoise Tower is lighted nicely in the evening.

    My husband and I were able to see this lake at different times of the day. Really has a particular attraction about it. For me, it seems to change moods depending on the hour. In the morning, it is just quite serene and simple. In the afternoon, it can be mysterious. But towards the evening, it becomes more and more romantic. A Hanoi vacation is definitely incomplete without visiting this charming feature in the heart of the city.

    Sipping vietnamese coffee beside the Hoan Kiem Lake is definitely a Hanoian past-time. The cool breeze the lake magnetizes is a soothing way to find your center while cyclos ruch back and forth around you.

  • The big lake in the middle of Hanoi really makes the city beautiful. It is nice to walk around under the shade of the surrounding trees. You can stop off along the way to have a drink or something to eat as there are plenty of cafes. There is a tumble-down tower in the middle of the lake that makes an interesting focal point. It is called Tortoise Tower. The lake itself is sometimes called 'Lake of the Restored Sword'. Legend has it that after a momentous victory against the Ming chinese in the 15th century the Emperor was sailing on the lake and a golden turtle claimed the charmed sword and restored to the lake from whence it came. Apparently there still might be turtles in the lake today!

    The lake is in the center of the city. Surrounded by market , cafe and foodstall. Even for the local people this lake is interesting, it's nice to take a walk around it or jogging or even just sitting and watching the activities.
