Sunset, Perfume Pagoda River by bpacker Miss this and you'll miss the Halong Bay of the Rice Paddy Fields. The best deal about this trip is the the fun boat trip along the scenic waterway which takes about 30min of constant rowing in a creaky boat. You'll see green quilted rice fields along the way, grazing buffaloes and astounding scenary, particularly around sunset. Note: Perfume Pagoda is about 75 km south-west of Hanoi and it takes a bum-rotting 2.5bus ride to get there as the road sucks big time. But the scenary and boat ride more than makes up for it. Contact ODC travels for a well-organised trip there. It cost roughly $14 per person, including lunch. Leave a Comment

View from Sung Sot Cave by bpacker If someone should ever compile a list for the seven Natural wonders of the modern world, I'm quite sure Ha Long Bay would make it. It has already been noted by Patricia Schultz as one of the spots in the famed tome "1000 places to see before you die". 1,600 islands and islets, beautiful jade green waters and countless of gigantic limestone pillars. Need I say more? You need to be here to understand what I am saying. Go for a tour package with a reliable agency here. So far ODC and Handspan seem to be the agencies of choice in VT. I went on a 3d2ntour with ODC and had loads of fun! Cost About USD56 per person for a full board trip. This also included canoeing. Leave a Comment

Ha Long Bay is a must visit if you are visiting Hanoi Vietnam. It is about 165 Km north of Hanoi and three hours drive. When we were there it was misty for two days. It wasn’t the best for taking photos but without doubt it was still a breathtaking experience. Ha Long Bay is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage for its outstanding geological value which is mainly made up of limestone. Today Ha Long Bay support fishing villages that the fisherman’s in search of many species of fish and many varieties of mollusk. They are four community fishing villages with a population of 16,000. They live in a community floating houses, with some of the catches they will try to sell it to the oncoming tourist Junk Boat. Ha Long Bay consists of large and small monolithic islands made up of limestone. The smaller islands have sandy beaches where you can go for a swim. Most of the islands have thick jungle vegetation which supports animals such as monkeys, antelopes and lizards (iguanas). You will also find several caves, we visited Sung Sot cave. When you visiting Vietnam you will hear many legends and Ha Long Bay did not escape of a legend story. The local believed that god sent dragons to help of defending the land from the Chinese invaders. The dragons began spitting out jewels and jades to the sky and when it dropped it turned into islands and the island link together form a great wall against the Chinese invaders.

There are many good trips outside Hanoi, ranging from one day to a few days. These can be easily organised by the many tour operations in Hanoi, especially in the Old Quarter area. Walk around and compare prices, the company which I joined was ODC Travels (recommended by several VT members) which I found to be good and of reasonable price, Their website is below for your reference. Trips that are worth considering are: Ha Long Bay - The scenery here is very beautiful and one of the most famous in Asia. This is also an UNESCO world heritage site. Best is to spend at least 2-3 days here. More information and photos are at my VT Ha Long page. Sapa - Sapa is a very picturesque town located in the mountains of northern vietnam close to china. You need to take a night train to reach Sapa. It is a very popular tourist attraction in Vietnam and you need to spend at least 2-3 days here to enjoy. More information and photos are at my VT Sa Pa page. Perfume Pagoda - This famous pagoda can be reached via a day trip from Hanoi. It involves going through a picturesque river before doing quite a tough climb up to the pagoda. Tam Coc - This place is known as "Halong Bay of the Land", consisting of many beautiful limestone hills, rivers, caves etc. It can be done via a day trip from Hanoi. Village visit - There are also day tours for you to visit various villages near to Hanoi to experience the life of the local people, handicrafts etc. Leave a Comment

A visit to Hoa Lu is a worthy day trip out from Hanoi. Considered to be the Halong Bay in land, this has some stunning scenery. Start with a walk up to Bich Dong temple before setting off on your sampan tour of the waterways. A relaxing day away from the traffic of Hanoi. The journey to Hoa Lu is entertaining itself - see how many different 'cargos' you can spot on the mopeds and bicycles.

A day tour to Hoa Lu and Tam Coc is most enjoyable. Further into the countryside, the more interesting things you witness. We stopped at Hao Lu first, and visited the 10th century historic temples Dinh Tien Hoang and Le Dau Hahn. Next......onto where the row boats leave for Tam Coc. Firstly, a nice lunch in the Hotel just across the road, then........ onto a small rowboat for a nice scenic journey along the river. We passed through 3 caves, then turned around and come back. At the turn around point, you will be hassled to buy drinks and food, they are lying in wait for the "tourists who can not get away!" You can have your photo taken along the way, a girl in a rowboat pulled up alongside and took photos One photo cost 10,000dong less than $1. When you come ashore, the girl who took the photo will find you, no worries about that! This was an enjoyable days outing, out amongst incredible limestone karsts. I felt it was a MUST DO!

About a 2hour or 70ks drive from Hanoi, it gives you a chance to see the countryside, and perhaps, breathe in a little cleaner air, although there is smog still here. At the town of Ben Duc, you leave your transport and go by iron boat for approx one hour, where you alight and make your way to the temple. The boat trip is beautiful, so peaceful, the water clean, sitting on the iron bar is extremely hard on the bottom for an hour!!! On alighting, you walk pass many eateries with all kinds of animals skun and hung up. Passing through turnstiles, (no bins to put tickets in, and what a mess on the ground) the ladies on our tour took the option of going up and down in the Gondala. The views were good from it, but for the disgusting trash. Huong Tich is a large cavern, with lots of Buddhas, Monks and people. Back down the hill, plenty of pathway stalls for the Buddhists and tourists to buy from. This was done on a day tour from Hanoi

Also known as Huong Pagoda. The trek up to the Pagoda is about 4 km, slippery and hot if you are doing it in May-Jun. Good news is that there is now a cable car operating - abt 30,000 Dong one-way. I chose to trek up to experience the "old way" of walking to the Pagoda and you get to see beautiful scenary and some temples along the trek. Coming down by cable car to have another aerial view of the area. Leave a Comment Address: 60 km from Hanoi

rice paddies and cliff by Christianzagar nick-named the Halong Bay of the rice paddies. It's a beautiful place... too me it was debateable whether Halong Bay was more beautiful cause of the garbage everywhere in the ocean. The whole area is covered in huge limestone cliffs jutting out of the rice paddies. Most people take a two hour rowboat ride down a small river. Passing through caves and by huge cliffs. A very beautiful spot. Many of the boat drivers row the boats with their feet... strange but interesting. You will be pressured to look at your drivers embroidery. If you have no interest in buying anything then don't show any interest or you may find it hard to get out of your boat..... Leave a Comment Directions: Tam Coc is a few hours drive from Hanoi

main hall by Christianzagar Most places you will stay in Hanoi will pressure you into taking their perfume pagoda tour. It's a reasonably priced day trip that included all transport and lunch. We left early morning and drove for about two hours where we boarded a small row boat and were then rowed for about an hour to the base of the mountain. Then we walked up part of the way for lunch. After lunch we visted the padoda then took a short trek further up the mountain to a few smaller temples and a cave. All in all it was an enjoyeable experience. I didn't enjoy how we were pushed from place to place without having time to enjoy the sites.... but that's group tourism..... Leave a Comment
