Phoenix in the Temple of Literature, Hanoi. by worldkiwi This historic complex was Vietnam's first national university and dates back centuries. There are several very good, detailed and well written signs around the complex, which give you a lot of information. The inner or central part of the temple of literature has a shrine and some impressive statues of phoenix. Entrance was 5000d. To get there take a motorbike taxi. It cost me 10000d from the Old Quarter. The entrance is on the road written below. Leave a Comment Address: Pho Quoc Tu Giam

by pmarshuk Van Mieu (or Temple of Literature) is to the west of Hoan Kiem Lake. It was originally founded in 1070 to honour scholars. Vietnam's first university was here for the education of the sons of mandarins I haven't scanned in all the pictures I took here yet so here's the only one I can find for now. Leave a Comment

A must see on any visit to Hanoi is the Temple of Literature, which was actually founded as Hanoi's first University nearly a thousand years ago. In fact, the temple/university itself is actually only ten years younger than the city of Hanoi itself. It's a verdant, peaceful park in the middle of the bustling city, with classic Vietnamese architectural features. I loved all the nooks and crannies of the temples, including the stones containing the names of graduating students. Don't miss the pond in the middle of the complex or the true temple area in the back. In fact, the temple area contained a Vietnamese band playing traditional music while wearing old-time costumes. Originally dedicated to Confucius and to Chu Cong, the Temple of Literature is one of Vietnam's most important cultural sights. Wander around the courtyards, visit the alter to Confucius and listen to a group of traditional Vietnamese musicians playing their instruments. Parts of the temple have been restored after bombing; this has been done very sympathetically. Leave a Comment Address: Van Mieu Road

This is quite an interesting place to visit because it is quite tranquil and reminded me very much of visiting a Japanese temple and its surrounds.

The Temple of Literature (Van Mieu) is one of the oldest sights in Hanoi. The temple was founded in 1070 by Emperor Ly Tranh Tong, and is a shrine to the Chinese philosopher Confucius. In 1076, the first university in Vietnam (Quoc Tu Giam or School for the sons of the Nation) was founded at the temple. First it was only for mandarins, but later for all people. The university was closed in the late 18th century when Emperor Gia Long transferred it functions to the new capital at Hue. The Temple of Literature consists of five courtyards. The first two are basically gardens; the third courtyard has a large pond (the well of heavenly clarity) and it is also here you find the stele honouring the university's candidates; the fourth courtyard is home of the Great House of Ceremonies and a large statue of Confucius; finally - the last courtyard is the Thai Hoc, holding the large two stories main hall and a drum and bell tower. It also contained the Quoc Tu Giam, but this was destroyed by French bombing in 1947. Beautiful and tranquil place in the centre of Hanoi. Directions: Pho Van Mieu - at the corner of Pho Quoc Tu Giam.
