Walking arround: Street of Tin
  • Tip Rating:
  • I am seriously not bluffing when I mentioned that the street name is named after the specialization of certain sector.

This is one of the noisiest streets where sound of knocking tins can be heard all over. These guys can knock & shape those tin sheets into containers of all sizes and shapes. There is another Blacksmith Street found in the Old Quarter. I bluffed my backpack pal that these tin knocking guys are called “whitesmith”.

    Walking arround: Striving Hard
  • Tip Rating:
  • Life in Vietnam is harder than most of us can imagine. Just recovered from war torn period and political instability, everyone is striving hard to bring foods on their table. There is no exception for both young and old to engage in something all the time.

I was greatly touched in many ways when I look into their daily live and constant struggle. That’s the reason why I do not write my Vietnam pages by telling about facts, but lives of the people.

Walking arround: Interior of the Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well, when you check out a beautiful car you will normally look into interior as well right?

The exterior of the cathedral looks great, but the interior looks awesome. I am a bit shocked by the view initially. In fact it is much nicer that Notre Dame of HCM City.

Just look the panel behind the pulpit.

    Walking arround: It’s Beautiful Everywhere
  • Tip Rating:
  • You may think that only the pulpit area looks awesome, but other section may be just ok looking. This is one of the side panels and it is looking awesome.

Overall, I like the interior of Nha Tho Lon Cathedral, but the exterior of Notre Dame HCM City.

    Walking arround: Old Quarter

  • Old Quarter Intersection - Hanoi
    Old Quarter Intersection

The Old Quarter is a place in Hanoi where you can get lost for hours. It consists of multiple blocks of old houses that are built narrow but long and high. Just imagine a series of rectangles next to each other. It is considered a UNESCO world heritage site. Each of the separate businesses sells one particular specialty. For instance you will find a store that just sells red lanterns, another that just sells goldfish, another jewerly, another stationary and so on. Its so neat to think that in Hanoi these businesses make it selling just one particular type of item coming from America where we like to have one stop shopping in our WalMarts.

Walking arround: You must explore the Old Quarter on foot.
  • Tip Rating:
  • A "must do" in Hanoi is a walking tour of the city's Old Quarter. This was the site of the original centre of Hanoi and the streets still bear the names of their original functional characteristic. Streets were devoted in a guild-like way to selling particular goods. Hence there was (and still is) a "tin street", a "paper street", and a "copper street". Today you can still experience remnants of this old city characteristic in the narrow, twisting lanes of the Old Quarter.
If you own a Lonely Planet guidebook, there is an extensive walking tour in there for you to follow.
Some highlights include the Hang Thiec Street (the tin street) and Hang Ma (the paper street), but everywhere you go in the Old Quarter, there are great sights, sounds, smells, and tastes!

  • Directions: The Old Quarter is north of Hoan Kiem Lake. Many budget hotels are located there, so it is a good base in Hanoi.

  • It's said that the Old Quarter holds the heart and spirit of Vietnam. People are buying and selling in every nook and cranny of the street, and there's a constant flow of bicycles and motos whizzing by.
If you're on a budget, you'll probably want to find a place to stay in the Old Quarter. Rooms range from $3 to $30 dollars. You'll also find plenty of bargain shopping and countless cafes for cheap eats.

    Walking arround: Old Quarter
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Old Quarter is an amazing array of streets filled with tourists, hotels, cafes, markets, bia hois, and traffic. This area is also packed with local shops filled with craftsmen and sales people. You can spend hours here walking around, shopping, eating, and chatting with the locals. Our hotel was in this area, and here we spent much of our time.

The Old Quarter is located just north of Hoan Kiem Lake.

To see the Old City part of Hanoi, the best and cheapest way is do a walking tour. There are many brochures available, or even some guide books that give comprenhensive route's for this. Its reaslly the only way to experiance the atmosphere of the area, and it also means that you can stop at your leisure if you see something you want to buy, (happens often), or want to see more of.

Streets in their english translations are eg. Shoe Street, Hardware St, and so on.

Apparently this area of the city was the part that was spared during the war, so most of what you see is authentic.
