    I’ve never seen this kind of show before. Wood puppet played on water, so unique. The puppeteers used bamboo to control the puppet. I’m sure they’ve done this thousand and thousand of time. The movement of the puppet is so smooth. The music was also very unique. With not more than US$ 2 you’ll see Vietnam style of puppet and unique Vietnam traditional music (including cassette).

    My ex-bf insisted that i should watch them. Im not much interested with folk arts but after watching their show for an hour i thought that my Hanoi trip would be incomplete without them.

    The Water Puppet Theater show is one of the highlights of a trip to Hanoi. Thang Long water puppetry is a traditional art form with distinctive culture identity of Vietnam. It came to existence, developed and diversified over a thousand years ago in the Red River Delta. Thanks to unique performances in waist high water, Thang Long water puppetry art is famous and highly appreciated all over the world. The puppeteers at Thang Long Water Puppet Theater have enthralled audiences all over the world.
    The performance that I attended lasted for one hour and consisted of 17 short sketches depicting village life, agriculture, harvest, dances of legendary creatures and a re-enactment of the Legend of the Restored Sword of King Le.
    It is advisable to reserve your tickets in advance through the box office or through a travel agent because the queue is very long and the shows are invariably full to capacity.

    The traditional art of water puppetry is unique to Vietnam, and the Thang Long troupe in Hanoi stages excellent performances nightly. Water Puppetry in Vietnam dates back at least a millenium, and performances depict typical scenes of life for rural Vietnamese. Traditional Vietnamese music is played to accompany the performance. The puppeteers manipulate the water puppets from behind a screen, and the puppets move around atop a pool of water (hence the name water puppets). Despite all the dialogue being in Vietnamese, an English program helps you to follow the many short storylines.

    Truly fascinating!

    The traditional folk songs are great and reading the itinerary will give you a good overview of the performance. Do get the "first-class" seats and first few rows to have a good view.

    The water puppet show was one of my favourite things that we did in Hanoi. It was amazing to see how these wooden puppets could come to life just by some people with sticks. The stage was green water and behind it was a pagoda set. To the left was a stage were the musicians played their traditional Vietnamese instruments. If you buy first class tickets you sit closer to the stage and you get a free CD. The one let down was the seats are not tiered very steeply so it can be a bit hard to see withour moving all the time!

    The water puppets of Hanoi are a common sight in many tourist orientated shops, yet, after watching a show, you might be sorely tempted to buy one of these fitting little souvenirs!
    The water puppet show is put on several times a day and I strongly advise booking in advance. I'd also strongly suggest you ask for the seats in the first row, so you have no heads in front of you (the seating is not very well thought out).
    The show consists of a montage of historical and legendary stories, acted out by the puppets in their "pond". It is quite an ingenious way of enterntaining with puppets and one can easily see how it would have evolved in a rice field sometime in the past. You get a complimentary CD with soundtrack of the performance on it.
    My ticket cost 40000d in April 2005. I purchased it from the ticket office at the front of the theatre about 2 hours before the show. Do it the day before to get front row seats.
