I think this was definitely one of the better museums in Vietnam, and it was a shame, really, that I was the only one, or one of two people there.

As the name implies, it's a museum dedicated to the contributions of women, ok, to Vietnamese women. It presents different aspects of women in the country, from soldiers to women in small, tribal communities. Of course, it also shows their political contributions, their importance to Uncle Ho, and their fearlessness in war. On the top floor, there is also a sense of the role played by Vietnamese women in the global women's movement.

Communism of the Ho Chi Minh variety was an egalitarian movement where all men and women were created equal, and revolutionary women were on the front lines throughout Vietnam's long conflicts with foreign powers. Whether pushing over laden bicycles along the Ho Chi Minh Trail Network or packing a pistol through the cave complexes outside of Saigon, Vietnamese women were proactive and this museum celebrates their pivotal contribution to the war effort. However, it is a little on the dull side except that there’s a great exhibition, upstairs, on the street vendors of Hanoi (see next tip).

    Open: 8am-4pm Tue-Sun. Admission: 10,000 VND

    Women’s Museum – Street Vendors

This interesting exhibition on Hanoi’s street vendors was on display, upstairs, at the Women’s Museum and is well worthy of a visit even if the main museum part, downstairs, isn’t! It exhibits many photos of the different type of street vendor that ply Hanoi’s streets along with real case accounts from the women themselves. I think this is only a temporary exhibition which is a real shame.
