try to get a cyclo rider that speaks at least a lill english and u have yourself a free guide as well, well, sorta.
the ride codt me USD1 per hour and i hired him for about 4 hours, paid for his lunch and beer, cos i really wanted to taste the local food.he could spoke all right english and all.but at the bottom of our 4th beer,he was speaking to me in vietnamese.hahahaha.
he was a really nice guy and brought me to some festival where we met a few more friends and drank rice wine sitting on some grass patch and his wife was bbq-ing cuttlefish by the side.
Deal the price before you get on cyclo and make sure you have exact change because they always say they dont have a change for you. Keep your eyes open all the itme --- you sit in front of the driver !!!
Cyclos not too long ago were still one of the primary methods of movement in Hanoi. Increasingly they exist mainly for tourists. If it is your first time in Hanoi the cyclo can be a very good form of transportation. The drivers generally have good english skills and know everything about their town. Make sure that you bargain and agree to a price beforehand. Paying upfront can be a good idea. Carry exact change as the guys never have change. It should be about $2 USD for an hour if you bargain hard enough.
The prices are good, about 2-5 us$ for a ride. bargaining with the rider will help. ;-) It is a wonderful way to see hanoi from the roadside, you can hear all the noise, and at times it was even nerve -wracking when the rider manged to worm his way thru tiny gaps in the traffic! Fun!
This is as older postcard of a Hanoi street scene. The transportation vehicle is called a "cyclo" and works by leg power.
If you can believe it TWO of us fir our big butts in here -- it was a SLOW trip to One PIllar Pagoda I can assure you:)
Riding Cyclos to short distances are okay for experience sake. Expect to pay about 10,000 dong to nearby destinations but make sure to agree on a price first before boarding.
A very good way to tour around the city if you are too lazy to walk. I didn't try it but someone offered me a 1 hour ride for about USD 2 before.
