Here we ordered two Hot Pots.Thankfully we noticed how huge they were and changed our order to one. Good thing it was a massive amount of food. Phan Thiet Transportation

  • Private transfer

We wanted to leave Mui Ne and arrive in Cambodia the same day .This isn't possible by bus so we arranged a car rental ( that comes with a driver) to take us to Saigon and from there we had lots of time to catch the 1PM bus to Cambodis. The cost of the car was $94.00 for the two of us.The trip took about 4.5 hours .We left early ( before the buses)...

  • Bus from Saigon

We booked our bus to Mui Ne before leaving home with Hotels-IN Vietnam.com.( They also arranged our bus to Cambodia and our Visa on Arrival in Vietnam. As promised our tickets were waiting at our hotel in Saigon when we arrived. We walked from our hotel in District 1 to the bus stop. All the tourist offices are located along this street along with...

  • Jeep

For the daily strolls, to the dunes and nature we got a jeep with a driver that can take us where ever we wanted. That was easy and also very cheap, with a cost of one taxi ride in Finland for 10 minutes we could have a friendly driver that knew all the places and took us everywhere.

Phan Thiet Shopping

  • Pearls

As soon as we got to town I noticed pearls were being sold everywhere. Black ,Pink and White. They are pretty inexpensive so I questioned if they are real .Honestly I'm still not sure . When I got back home I compared them to the fresh water pearls being sold here from China and I really can't see a difference. Most are not strung ( knotted...

  • Local shopping

There will be many streets vendors and some on the beach that will try to sell you something, fruits, drinks, food and jewelry. I usually try to avoid those as they might not leave you alone until you buy something, but sometimes I actually rather buy from them as that might help them also to make a living. Pearls, we bought few.

  • Fish sauce

OK, I added it here just to be sure you get the right one, do not leave this place without this excellent fish sauce, this will improve your Vietnamese cooking to the level that you will (almost) not miss anymore the Vietnamese holiday food :)

Phan Thiet Local Customs

  • Dragon Fruit

We wondered what the wonderful white fleshed fruit with the black seeds was .We had never tried it before but it was on our breakfast buffet each morning .Here in the Mui Ne area there are fields and fields of the bright pink cactus fruit with the sweet white inside. It is called Dragon Fruit.

  • Snake Wine

While browsing in one of the local shops one evening I came upon a whole section of Snake Wine. The larger the bottle the bigger the snake. Snake wine consists of rice wine mixed with ,what at least looked like a Cobra. The snake is coiled up inside . Reportedly, the more venomous the snake, the better the wine. There were also bottles with scorpians...

  • Foot Massage

We had good memories of these massages from Thailand a few years ago ,so we looked forward to trying it here. There are fewer massage parlours available here as the gov't limits their numbers in an effort to control the potential for "extra" services..There were a choice of several along the main street and our service was excellent . It was $7.00...

Phan Thiet Warnings and Dangers

  • The sea

I cannot really tell of any danger I noticed here. The sea is obviously one danger when you get into it, be aware that there might be strong current. A jellyfish is the other hazard, watch out where you swim and where you put your step.

  • Don't ask hotel to arrange land package...

    1. The best is for yourself to compare at least 3 LAND PACKAGE COMPANIES' prices before making decision.2. Hotels at Mui Ne may join hands with the land packages company and jerk up the land packages prices to you. They earn commission. And they dont record the prices on the receipt to you.3. Dont trust them after you book the hotel with them and...

  • Ask the agent about the bus you will be...

My hotel recommended bus was too old. Other busses from Mui Ne were much newer, and, I assume in much better condition. The lack of shock absorbers and non-functioning air conditioner vents made for an unpleasent experience.

    by Gili_S Updated Nov 20, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Luggage and bags: I small daily backpack for a daily trips of carrying water, some food and the camera is very useful.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: We were in Vietnam during the winter, which is like summer for us :) we had very light tropic climate cloths as it can be hot and humid and we wore sandals most of the time.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: If you do plan some adventure, jungle trekking and visits to the countryside, have mosquito repellent with you.
*Please note that this particular region is not a high risk of malaria, but it is possible, so better to be prepare, depends of where exactly you plan to travel and sleep in. Ask the experts for advice.

Photo Equipment: As usual, in such countries with all the diversities of sites and nature you want to carry with you all the best photo equipment that you can carry.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Those that suits for tropical climate.

  • Ta Ku

Ta Ku is about one hour trip + one hour of mountain climbing if you don't chose to use the cable car. As often I do, I rather climb up and take the cable back down as so we did here. There are some temples and holly sites to visit here as well and the very famous lying Buddha.

  • Kite Surfing

This place I also put in nightlife section, as it's one of the best bars on the strip. Not being into kite surfing (more of a kite watcher myself) but have a lot of friends who are and this is the place to go. Opened a few years ago and has PASA and IKO certicates. They have the lot and do training courses

  • Parachuting

Like almost in any water resort these days, also you can have some fun with the water parachuting. Just be aware that sometimes the winds are just too strong for doing it safety so it is not always available.

  • Kite surfing

Due to the good wind and wide beaches kite surfing is very popular here and one of the best activities if you happened to be here. There are clubs and guides just about everywhere all along the long beach.

Phan Thiet Favorites

  • Phan Thiet

Phan Thiet is located on the south east part of Vietnam. It is developing as a tourist destination with its beautiful beaches, nature and food culture. Lately more and more hotels and resorts are developing here and you can only imagine that after another decade or two it will be another resort full of Western tourists escaping the European winter.

  • Is this Egypt???

No it's not Egypt. These sand dunes are a short drive away from the hotels/resorts in Mui Ne. Play a prank on friends and relatives back home and tell them you've taken a detour... all the way to Egypt.

  • Rough Seas

It's a good idea to find a hotel/resort with a nice swimming pool. The ocean around Mui Ne is often a little too rough to enjoy. It's better to relax in the calm, crystal blue water of a tree-lined swimming pool. (See Accomodation Tip)
