roll them up yourself by richiecdisc When you do a group tour into the Mekong Delta, many of your meals will be pre-determined, some even included in the price of the tour. But when you can, it’s nice to break from your group and find your own little local restaurants. Our group was being horded off to a tourist restaurant that served up many local delicacies like snake and rat meat. It is very true that these edibles are much sought after by locals and certainly an interesting diversion for those wanting to try them. From what a friend of ours told us, it was fun! But generally these items are beyond the means of most locals and would be reserved for very special occasions.
Since it was one of our last meals in Vietnam, we opted for trying to find something more down to earth and local. I asked at the hotel reception and found out there was a place not far from the hotel that served grilled items like pork in various incarnations. We sought out bun thit nuong, a grilled pork over rice vermicelli and found it and something quite similar, in which the fillings were wrapped up in sheer rice paper, in make shift spring rolls. The place was packed with locals and they only stopped briefly to inspect the ragamuffins that dropped into their unsuspecting paradise. We ordered quickly from their convenient photo menu. The bun thit nuong was fantastic and huge for 8000 dong (fifty cents), and the wraps were incredibly stuffing for 11000 dong. It's a major street so should not be hard to find.

sticky rice bowling ball by galy There speciality is "Sticking rice bowling ball" with chicken. Half of the fun is to see how its done. The cook take a spoon full of this sticky rice mixture and put ir in a huge wok with hot oil. the ball of rice starts to grow while the cook keeps rolling it in the hot oil. When it reaches the size of a bowling ball he takes it out and straight to your table. There they cut it with scissors and devid it between the guests.

It doesn't look like much from the outside, and indeed, the inside won't win any decorating awards, but that's not what it's all about. This little place has all the standard local fare, and is usually full of groups of locals eating and drinking merrily, but buried in the menu is a mind-blowing treat. "A sort of chicken soup" "A sort of shrimp soup" Of course the curious English was enough to persuade one to order the soup. It was sensational. Vietnamese hot and sour soup, with the perfect balance of tamarind, chili, and lemongrass. The single best soup I have ever tasted anywhere, any time, in any life. Every spoonful was sublime. If you're in Can Tho, do not miss this soup. Theme: OtherPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Check your guidebook

by locbuuloc This dish is made in Thanh Van restaurant that has been famous since 1975 forward. The dish is processed meticulously. The fresh meat is crushed in stone mortar, then mixed with spices and grilled on wood-embers. Eat this dish with steamed rolls made of rice-flour or rice vermicelli, and various vegetables, and so on. The restaurant is crowded with table companion in both normal days and holidays.

Enjoying a nice setting along the Can Tho River waterfront, overlooking the market and a small square with a huge Ho Chi Minh statue, this 2 storey restaurant was recommended warmly by Rough Guide. And it indeed proved to be an excellent choice. Try to get a table at the narrow balcony for nice views. The restaurant is housed in a restored French villa and the ambience is nice. Food (both local and western) was great, tasteful and not expensive (around 2-3€ per dish). Recommended.
