When considering whether to take a bus, or the train, or hire a private car (with driver), I'd highly recommend the train.
The train takes 3 hours, is not expensive and is very scenic. Bus is the cheapest option (around USD 3) but the least scenic (goes through a tunnel). Private car option is the most expensive and would make sense only if travelling with small children.
We did consider taking a car from Hue to Da Nang, when planning our trip, however, we learnt that there are usually a finite number of stops that are allowed. If arranging this option via your hotel, you might want to make it clear with them before they communicate this with the driver / travel agent that you might want to make multiple stops along the way.
Should you need more convincing that taking the train isn't all that bad, I shot almost 600 photographs during the train journey between Da Nang to Hue. They have been compiled into 2 videos (one 96 seconds, the other 9 minutes) on my photoblog, http://bit.ly/r6oTdX.

When travelling from Da Nang to Hoi An, it is best to negotiate the price of a taxi. Do not take a metered taxi as they charge much more.
We were there in August 2011. We paid around VND 400000 taking a metered cab from Da Nang airport to Hoi An! In comparison, we paid only USD 15 for a minivan (arranged by our hotel) on our return leg from Hoi An to Da Nang train station.
To summarize, you have 2 options (from the airport) :
(a) arrange for a pickup by your hotel (typically costs USD 15), OR
(b) negotiate the price of a taxi.
Also, please note that there's not much of a view from Da Nang to Hoi An. You'd only get to see kilometers upon kilometers of newly constructed luxury residential properties when taking a taxi from Da Nang to Hoi An.

Depending on how much luggage you have (suitcase vs. backpack, etc.) taxi between DaNang and HoiAn is always possible, but a scooter taxi may be cheaper. Alternatively, there is a public bus that goes between the two. I don't recall the exact pick-up in DaNang, but it is near the Green Plaza Hotel. Go there and ask the bellmen, they should point you to the right place.
Alternatively, there are pick-ups at the bus terminal on the northwest side of DaNang.

Is this a jok or what? Our cruise ship docked at Chan May Port, This port is in the middle of nowhere! The only thing in sight was some sort of either sand or salt piles at the pier.
The closet big town Da Nang, is one hour away, and Hue is two hours away. Hoi An is one and half hours away. The closest main road to the pier is 8 km away. If you do not have a shore excursion, you are stranded because nothing was within walking distance from port. Luckly limited taxis are available. Be sure to agree on a price before getting into the taxi.

We took Tigerairways (TR376) from Singapore (SIN) on 18 May 2006 at 06:45 and arrived Danang (DAD) on the same day at 08:30.
We paid SGD57.23 (SGD9.98 airfare and SGD47.25 for taxes & fees) per person on a one-way flight because we flew back from Hanoi.
Note: Tigerairways doesn't fly to Danang anymore.

The airport is located just 3 km southwest of Danang. . There are frequent flights to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on both Vietnam and Pacific Airlines, as well as limited services to places in the Central Highlands and Nha Trang. There is also limited services direct to Singapore, Bangkok, Taipei and Siem Reap. Aside from a money changer, airport amenities are rather minimal. A departure tax of $8 USD is charged for international flights.
A taxi to or from town should only cost about $3 USD. A taxi from the airport to Hoi An costs about US$15 but only about half that in the other direction.
