Hot Sands & Bikinis
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sand particles in Nha Trang beach are quite big & they can be quite hot especially around 11:30-2pm.

Remember to bring along water sport foot wear (like Nike ACG), because those hot sands almost caused injury to my foot.

One more thing, those skimpy bikinis can be quite hot too. Bring a good pair of eyewear to protect from eye injury & prevent being caught by your female pal for watching one*.

Note*: Normally come in pair(s). Haha!!!

    Books for sale
  • Tip Rating:
  • Everywhere in VN, people may disturb your lunch or supper trying to sell souvenirs, lottery tickets or plain and simple beg. The Nha Trang variant is selling books. The locals will go buy a range of books at the local bookstore (I assume), then selling them through to the tourists. In case you like reading, this will be a wonderful way to buy books. Otherwise, the local perseverance (which seems even harder than elsewhere) may soon become annoying. But don't panic: there will be a variation, cos you'll also be able to buy candy, cigarettes and so on. Please try to stay polite however, these people are just trying to make a living

    Mosquitos
  • Tip Rating:
  • I got very badly bitten by mosquitos in Nha Trang at the Sailing club. I was covered from head to foot in Neet Deet and still they made a meal out of me biting me about 20 times. Theres a very low risk of malaria there but still it made the rest of my stay in Vietnam quite uncomfortable.

    Beach antics
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be careful on the beach at night. Not that you are in much physical danger but as one party going Norweigan found out, if you pass out drunk on the beach, you are likely to wake up sans cash and wallet!

    Just exercise common sense.

    Train station taxis
As with any other city, don't take any taxis right at the train station. They will overcharge you 5 times the normal rate. Just walk down a few blocks and catch a taxi on the street. Don't negotiate any price, just point to the meter and tell them to turn it on. From my experience, the meters that sit at the top of the dashboard (as opposed to down low in the middle where the radio is) tend to be legit. From the train station to our hotel in the centre (Green Hotel), it only cost 14,000 dong.

    School girls Long son pagoda
At the pagoda, school girls will befriend you. They said not to worry, as they were not tour guides. They were just as bad. After linking arms with me, and i thought, enjoying our time together, came the hard sell. They wanted me to buy silk paintings for 200,000dong each. In Hue, I paid 32,000dong for 3 of these silk paintings, very overpriced. When i wouldn't buy, not even at the reduced price of 50,000 each, (I didn't want anymore) the scene changed.
The friendlinest went, evidently a put on. I offered a donation, which finally, was ungraciously accepted. You would think it better to accept any amount and to behave nicely.

    Hot sun!
Being by the sea Nha Trang feels relatively cool compared to other towns and cities in Vietnam. Make sure you put on lots of sunblock!
I got burnt on the first day and had to spend a few days laying by the pool covered in a sarong!

Nha Trang Bay Tourist - Travel agency to avoid
Do never deal with this agency. Commissions are very high and will be charged even if the service does not correspond to your needs. The personnel are not honest. They just want to make money on you. They will put you in a bad position where you have no choice to pay it. My air ticket was booked and confirmed and when I came to pick up, the air ticket became a train ticket which cost the same. I had no choice to take it because they will not reimburse my deposit (50% of deposit is required to print the ticket) and the hotels were fully booked. It’s better to deal with your hotel travel agent or Saigontourist located at the Yasaka hotel.

Taxi Scam at Nha Trang Train Station
Driver will take your bag automatically and put it into his taxi - then say he'll take you to your hotel for far more than it really costs. For 4 people we were charged $5 US which we bargained down from $6. Stupid of us, but it was raining and late. We should have told him to turn on the meter - the charge would have been only 17,000 dong - about $1 US.

Just tell the driver to turn the meter on and go to a hotel that you have previously selected.

Better yet is to bypass the taxi queue in front of the station and catch one out on the street.

    Crime rate
I find Nha Trang is not a very save place to stay. I heard nasty stories from robberies to belongings going missing from hotel rooms and prostitution. In general, the crime rate in this town is also quite high. If you are travelling alone, just be more careful when are you in this place.
