Snorkelling boat trip
  • Tip Rating:
  • While you are on the island, go on a boat trip to the small islands for some snorkelling. we avoided the more expensive trips that were run by the resorts and went with "Mr Si" who is mainly based at the Rainbow restaurant on the beach.

The trip was $15 for a full day, including lunch, 3 stops for snorkelling around the An Thoi islands and a stop at Bai Sao white sandy beach.

My only critisism was that no flippers were provided (take your own if you can) and not very good warnings were given about protecting yourself from coral cuts in the shallow water. Beware of the sea urchins as well, someone unpleasantly got spiked by one! Otherwise the trip is great value for money.

    Night time dog walking
  • Tip Rating:
  • These two took it upon themselves to escort us back to our resort one night after eating out at a different restaurant. Am not sure whether it was out of kindness or due to our torch assisting them in catching crabs!

The most important tip I could give for Phu Quoc evenings is to take a torch with you. The only way to get to other places on long beach is to walk along the unlit beach (or hop on a motorbike taxi and go the road way).

    Bai Sao Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • After arrived Phu Quoc & checked in hotel, rent a motobike, ride to Bai Sao beach which is about 30 km from Duong Dong main town. A bit tired to travel that long huh? But you will see it's worth. Sea water is cleaner & clearer, air is more purity than other places. It's also quite and cool here so that you can lie on hammock, for reading books or having a peaceful sleep. Furthermore, don't miss a chance to enjoy seafood at such a nice place like this. Grill live prawns, crabs and many kinds of fishes with your own hands and eat while drinking local beer (333 beer)... LA DOLCE VITA!!!

    Visit Bai Sao Beach.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bai Sao Beach is luckily not occupied by a military base. This means, you'll have easy access to it. Hire a motorbike to drive there either yourself, or with a driver. A return trip can be gained for 70000d. The driver will wait for you as long as you like.
The water here is superb for swimming in. The beach is one long stretch of stunning, soft, white sand. There is a single cafe linked to the low key My Lan Beach Cottages (see General tips).
Bai Sao is about 30km from Duong Dong by road. The eastern coast road is sealed and so less dusty.

  • Directions: The turn off to Bai Sao is on the east coast road, just north of the intersection with the dusty dirt road that runs up the west coast. Head for the locality of Cau Sau if you get lost and ask for directions.

    Shopping - Phu Quoc style.
  • Tip Rating:
  • A walk through the market in Duong Dong (the main town) is well worth the effort. You can buy delicious fresh tropical fruit and watch all the action.

  • Directions: The market is on the east side of the main bridge across the river in Duong Dong (heading to/from the airport), to the north.

    Exploring
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visit the towns at the Northern end of the island, the beaches I found were ordinary but the food was good & a nice way to kick back looking over the ocean towards Cambodia.
Drop into a school, make sure that it is during a break and make a donation all bring goods. They are lovely people & the kids smiles light up the world.

    Boat Tour
  • Tip Rating:
  • A group of us from our hotel got together & paid for a fishermens boat tour of the An Thoi islands. It worked out to about $8 -$12 usd per head. We started at An Thoi and travelled around the islands, stopping to swim when we wanted and snorkelled around some reefs - the latter were very ordinay because of overfishing and boats anchoring on the reefs.
We had lunch onboard, tried sea urchin, really salty - meal was really nice.

A few visits to be had notably a nice walk up to the waterfall and a short visit to the "nuoc mam" factory. This is the famous fish sauce made on the island. A hint : If you like this sauce, but are leaving by 'plane they will not let you take it onboard, as apparently they have had accidents on the 'planes and the stuff stinks to high heaven. So better to wait until HCMC before buying.

    Wander around Duong Dong Markets
About 500m from the Saigon Phu Quoc Resort is the town of Duong Dong. Here there is a very crowded market place. Not that much to buy here though. OK for a look.

Massage on the Beach (Duh! This is Asia)
Every beach in Asia is patrolled by women offering massage service and the sands of Phu Quoc are no exception. A one-hour soft massage fetches 50,000 dong (about $3) with additional services such as hair plucking, manicures, and pedicures available.
Anh, 30, and Fong, 24, are two sisters who worked on me daily. I had appointments at sundown every day for a massage and shoulder hair plucking. A beer, a massage, and a sundown were a great way to cap a tough day of sleeping on the beach.
