Phu Quoc Restaurants

  • Good Seafood

At our first day in the island we stroll to the center in the afternoon just after we arrived. And we saw this restaurant on the way, we went inside and have our late lunch here. It is a family restaurant I remember it was a little girl who is serving us, oh boy, she's fluent with her English and a pretty good entertainer. At first I asked her how...

  • European influenced Vietnamese

There is a new restaurant on Phu Quoc which was really nice called Itaca. It is clearly much more expensive than most other restaurants around since it is so cheap in Vietnam. The bill for 4 people was about 2 million dong which is about 100 USD. We had 4 starters, 4 main courses, 4 drinks, a fruit juice and about 3-6 beers. The size of the dishes...

Phu Quoc Nightlife

  • Time for squid hunting

If the sea is calm enough, you can have a chance to experience squid hunting. As most locals are fisherman, you can see how the process goes on. It must be really dark and no light is allowed so that you can catch the squid.

  • Enjoy nature's nightlife

There isn't much nightlife on Phu Quoc. That's great really. Start your evening by watching the sun melt into the Pacific Ocean and then find a beachside spot for dinner. Rest your dinner down on the beach gazing up at the sea of stars, or across the sea at the galaxy of squid boat lights!

This was included in the tours our first stop in this pearl jewelry shop. As I have seen around there were more local tourist than outsider. Once we get off the van there were one of the sales girl introduced to us, as one of our guide inside the shop. She show us how to open the oyster and where the pearl lying inside, those girls were good

Afterwards a tour to the workshops showing how they clean the pearls and how they make a jewelry and last but not the least up to the jewelry shop. It was very tempted though by looking to those beautiful pearls. From bracelet to necklace everything you can imagine, you can watch and wait while they are preparing your jewelry directly from the oysters farm to the consumer
I purchase my earring, it's because we still on tour they offer to deliver it to our hotel and payment will be done after delivery credit card or cash
    Amazing!

What to buy: Everything made from Pearls, you have choices bracelet, ring, earring and more. I bought my pair of earring

What to pay: 500,000 dong about 20 $

Phu Quoc Warnings and Dangers

  • Garbage situation on the beaches and sea...

A lot of people warn about trash washing up on the beaches and in the sea. I am pleased to say that in January 2014 I didn't see much of this. It certainly was not of an amount that I found concerning. By that I mean yes once per swim in the ocean I'd see a plastic bag or two, but that was it. At the Sao beach I saw a small glass bottle bobbing in...

  • Strange Stingers in Ocean

This is not really a major problem - may be more of a heads up kind of thing. When swimming in the ocean - sometimes you get the strange feeling of being stung. There was some kind of small stinger - but this never caused a problem at all and left no welts. It did not always happen - maybe it depended on the tides.

  • Phu Quoc to Phnom Penh bus scam!

Be aware of the Ha Tien to Phnom Penh scam! In Phu Quoc, agencies advertise a tourist bus service that takes you from Ha Tien to Phonm Penh for US18 (in fact, U$19, give their exchange rate). I was promised no walking, no waiting, and a big bus. As it happens they left us waiting a long time in the border and then put us all in a public van that...

Phu Quoc What to Pack

  • jolou's Profile Photo

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: There's not a lot to buy on Phu Quoc and the shops in Duong Dong town seemed more expensive than elsewhere in vietnam. Do all your clothes and souvenir shopping elsewhere and don't rely on Phu Quoc for shopping if it's your last stop before going home.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Take enough sun lotion with you for your whole trip. It was the one thing that we didn't take with us, assuming it would be on sale everywhere - how wrong we were! A few places sell miniture bottles of factor 30 Nivea suncream, otherwise you will be left to burn. Also take aftersun lotion or moisturiser if yoou are trying to get a tan - all the moisturiser we saw on sale was skin whitening - not so helpful for us!

Also take some strong deet with you as we didn't see much available.

    Looking for the shops?

Phu Quoc Off The Beaten Path

  • A bridge too far!

Hiring a 100cc motorbike on the disputed island of Phu Quoc, the red dust roads provide a challenge to the most experienced of motorcylists! Riding pillion, I decided to let my husband go first and experience the thrill (and intrepidation) of this road to the north of the island.

  • Ham Ninh fishing village

This place might not be so 'off the beaten trail' anymore, but it definitely has that feeling. It's a small fishing town on a beautiful sandy bayon the east coast. The jetty is really long. My driver took me right out to the end on the motorbike for a view back to the shore. This is reputedly a good place to have a fish dish for lunch!

  • Give the Gift of Language

Phu Quoc was the final stop on my North to South jaunt through Vietnam and the point at which I realized the futility of my attempts to pick up bits of the language. Bai Sao is a stunning beach on the eastern side of Phu Quoc. There are a few very low key beach 'cottage' places there. My Lan is one. You can see it's very simple.
