Children Of A Tribe
  • Tip Rating:
  • In Làng Gà, the village occupied by the K'hor tribe, everyone has a job to do, including the children. Whether picking or transporting vegetables, carrying a baby or comforting a younger sibling, the K'hor children learn at a tender age that life is comprised of hard work and idle time is a luxury allowed only to the youngest of them all.

However, the presence of tourists has also brought a negative change in the attitude of the children. Once shy and industrious, now the little ones are creeping toward visitors with their palms up. The principle of self-pride, which is the essence of tribal self-sufficiency, is lost with the younger generation. Unless the trend is reversed, this behaviour may be the first step toward identity lost.

    Núi Voi
  • Tip Rating:
  • This story goes back to the time before Đà Lạt was born. It was not a resort back then, but a wild open area where many tribes lived. When Lang and Bian planned to live together as husband and wife (see "Eternal Love" in the "Local Customs" tip), all the animals in the forest came to participate in the ceremony, including the two elephants that lived in La Ngư Thượng. Just before the elephants arrived at Đèo Cà Đắng (Prenn Pass), the news came that Lang and Bian had killed themselves.

The sadness took all the strength out of the elephants and they could no longer climb over the pass. Falling down in mourning, with their heads looking toward the K'Bùng mountain range where Lang and Bian took their lives, the elephants' bodies became two mountains that were later called Vơrơm Rowas in the K'hor language and Núi Voi (Elephant Mountains) in Vietnamese.

In the past, Núi Voi was one of the most important military strategic points, but it now enjoys the new role as a retreat for tourists as well as local residents of Lâm Đồng province.

    Chicken Village
  • Tip Rating:
  • Those tribal people that settle down in Chicken Village are previously mountain tribal people. Slash & burns had slowly becoming a problem to Central Highland and government had finally decided to stop their nomadic lifestyle by building this huge chicken that symbolized their identity.

    Carrot Farm
  • Tip Rating:
  • These ladies are working hard harvesting carrots from the farm. Most vegetable in Vietnam are organically grown with limited usage of chemical fertilizers.

You will smell some bad odor from organic fertilizer usage in the farm.

You will see many women folks working in the farm removing weed and fertilize the carrot plants. Great photographic theme i must say.

    Vegetable Farms
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visiting vegetable farms at Da Lat is quite fascinating (even for a farm boy like me). One thing that I realize is not many men are working in the farms.

Either too many men were killed during the war or men are just too lazy, just like what happen in land of Indo-china.

    A stroll around the lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just have a nice stroll around the beautiful lake. In case you sit down next to it for a while, you as well may be approached by a bunch of students who'll have a nice chat with you (gives them a chance to improve their English)

Floating Village, Da Lat to HCMC
About 3 hours into our road trip we arrived a large floating village as we crossed the river. There must have been 50 or more floating houses, some were reasonably close to the bridge which gave us the chance for a close up view. We could see the fishing nets floating next to the homes and it made us wonder what it would be like living on the river, particularly during the wet season.
