Located in the only up-market hotel in Sapa, this retsaurant is not cheap, but well worth a visit, espcecially if you have been travelling for a while and are kind of tired of Vietnamese food. Whilst the restaurant offers an extensive menu, I would opt for the Fondue or Raclette. Absolutely great stuff, especially when it is freezing outside!more
If you have come to Sapa to party, you are straight out of luck. Most people spend their time hiking and trekking, come 9 o'clock, everybodies hit the sack. There is one disco, the Apocalypse Redux (no relation to the Apocalypse in Hanoi or Saigon). The main attraction here are the minority shows on Fridays and Saturdays, attended by dozens of back-packers sharing a single coke. After the show, the locals take over, shaking and boogeying to techno beats. Problem is that the place only has 2 CD,s of way too loud techno. Best bet might be to have an informal round of drinks with a few buddies.
Dress Code: Any which way is fine.
A warning to beware of the latest scam operating out of Livitrans offices in Lao Cai. Having paid $65 for a soft sleeper, just myself and bicycle, I was asked shortly before the train departed to exchange tickets, being assured that this was an identical berth by the staff from Livitrans.Having walked to carriage 2 at the very end of the platform...more

Sapa is full of nice things to buy, like handmade silverjewelrys and clothes - and almost for free! But when you buy these products from sweet little girls their parents get in trouble, because childrens should be at school in the daytime. If they dont go, parent get money penalty from school - and they are already very poor!
I dont want to moralize, but I hope you think about it, at least.
What to buy: Handmade silverjewellerys, textiles and clothes
Black Hmong people are more frienldy. They can speak english so you can make lot of friends out there. Or try this Ong co khoe thong? (How are u?)
If you follow the tour, they will turn back half way near the waterfall following a small path. This is not a clear path where if you go alone, you wont know it. So you will follow the clear path which is a big round. You will still come out eventually, but most of the time, you are alone on the road. Hmm I am not sure if that is a wild pig. I saw...more
Travelling with a bicycle.Took the 5:30am bus with bicycle from Ha Giang (great city, beautiful province) to Lao Cai. Cost of the ticket on the board at the bus station was 100,000 vnd. With bike strapped to the roof I was expecting to pay the usual tourist price of double the fare. At the halfway point with 100km to go, the driver collected the...more
Normally you will buy the train ticket from Sapa travel agency if you are in Sapa. However, the travel agent will sure ask you to buy TulicoTourist train ticket. Tulico is more comfortable, of course much more expensive. So you will ask for normal train ticket price. They will tell you the price that is much more higher than the price you expected....more
If you take a van from sapa to lao cai bus station, and the van is not organised by any travel agency ( which means there are locals on the van together with you / or you waive and board the van at sapa road side), then u gotta beware. NEVERNEVER pay before you reach lao cai train station even though all locals pay or the driver shouts at you.The...more
A backpack or a day bag It's a little chilly in Sapa in the early morning and late night. So if you're not so used to a cool weather then you'll probably want to bring a light jacket with you. But I'm sure you will need more than that if you go there in the winter. I saw one photo shop there..it should be fine. You will go trekking in Sapa....more
Pack as light as possible. Ask if you can leave most of your luggages to hotel. It makes things more easier. If you want to explore surrounding areas, dont forget GOOD walking boots! Otherwise your legs are killing you after few hour walking on ricefields and climbing countless number of stairs. Blister plaster is excellent invention, too. Lots...more

Even if you have seen a lot of teraces in Sapa, it's worth while to stroll areound BacHa. the teraces are planted with olum trees, not rice, and the blooming is beautifull
You can join the trekking daytrip around the Sapa, get the chance to visit the hill tribe villagers and see their daily life.
Equipment: Pair of comfortable shoes/a bottle of water
Sapa people are curious. Even a normal local (not to sell you something) will first smile at you, then ask you where are you from, your age and your name.Vietnamese are very particular about age. Different to the custon in malaysia or singapore (not sure in other places) where the age of a lady is her top secret. They will ask your age and marital...more
