“Keeping the environment clean is everybody’s responsibility”, the sign says. So what is lacking just outside the park area, in Ninh Binh proper, the distant Hanoi or in the whole of northern Viet Nam is more English-language signs to keep the omnipresent dirt at bay. Good luck!

    Welcome to Viet Nam

Tam Coc might be touristy high point of northern Viet Nam for a very scenic reason. Nevertheless, it is a very real place with its everyday rural life going on parallel to the tourist conveyor. A walk in the area where the boats ply the waters of the Tam Coc River could unveil some scenes repeating themselves from biblical times. Goats are common denominator in Viet Nam it seems and arriving in January reveals the mechanism of their rejuvenation taking place. In one instance a female goat gave birth to two calves in the shelter of a shallow cave helped by her owners with a blanket for the newborns to squat on, leafy branches for the mother to chew on and small bon fire for all of them. Soon afterwards it became clear that restaurants in the area take advantage of the prolific goat rejuvenation program by offering goat dishes. The most attractive item on the menu was a plate with a whole baby goat sitting on a bed of lettuce. Considering what was happening literally around the corner it did not appear to be a hoax. Order was declined though due to possible sad feelings of the mother goat! Well, pho with some imported-from-China beef will do instead.

    A cow dung collection
    1 more image

In the village we visited we noticed that there is nothing going to waste. So, even the cow dung becomes free fertilizer for the crops.

Trouble is, its someones job to put it on the fields!! (see pic)

    House in the province
    1 more image

As the cliffs provide resources for the roads and the houses in the province villages, they are nearly all concrete and/or stone built. This makes for more impressive scenery and better roads to travel on.

Basically, they blast away the rock from the cliffs and use it accordingly

    Meeting a local school party

Ninh Binh people will constantly call, 'hello' at you and wave. They are very friendly. If given a chance and they know a little English, they will also try and talk. Please respond appropriately.
