The closest airport to Hoi An is Danang. I don't remember exactly, but it's something along the lines of a $10 taxi fare to the center of Hoi An from there. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

For travellin' a long distance: Since Hoi An dosn't have its own airport, the nearest one is in Danang -- about 40 mins drive. There are 2 domestic airlines available: Vietnam (VN) and Pacific Airlines. Single-trip ticket from Danang to Hanoi costs around 65 USD. Or if you have more time, takin' a train is one of the options. It takes around 16 hours from Hanoi to Hoi An, I know it's time-consuming but the scenery along the way is so pretty. But the train doesn't really REACH Hoi An, gotta catch another bus to the city. Theme: Airplane

Danang Airport by JohanIsWeg Vietnam's road and rail transport is such that trips over moderate distances may take much longer than what many tourists would expect in their home countries. Travellers should also take note of the significant number of motor vehicle crashes on Vietnam's roads. In light of this, and bolstered by the value-for-money fares, air transport takes on added significance. There are two airlines that service Vietnam's domestic routes: Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar (which amalgamated with Pacific Airlines). During holiday periods, particularly Tet, it is wise to book ahead rather than take a chance on booking internal flights after arrival. Unfortunately, Hoi An does not have a domestic terminal, which requires a flight to Danang. Fortunately, Danang is within easy driving distance of Hoi An. We booked Jetstar (Pacific) over the Internet, which was a painless experience, printed out the e-ticket and we were set to lift off. Booking in at the airport was easy. From memory we had a 20kg baggage plus carry-on allowance. The flight itself was uneventful and safe. It took us slightly more than an hour to fly from south to central Vietnam. Some of the birds-eye scenery was amazing, particularly the patch-work agricultural lands in all its emerald green glory. Food is available for purchase, but we did not indulge.

The agency by SirRichard There are many travel agencies in the modern part of Hoi An. I used this as I had a hop on hop off bus from Saigon and it stopped me here. Each little agency has its own minibus with daytrips to the beach, MySon... and longer trips to Danang, Hue, Hanoi... Phan Dinh Phung, 23. Tel. 861203 Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

In the bus by SirRichard I arrived and left the place on one of those "hop on- hop off" buses that go along the coast of Vietnam, from Saigon to Hanoi and viceversa. There are many of these private buses, almost each little national travel agency runs one, so you won't have problems finding one. When they arrive to a city, the driver will take you directly to the hotel THEY recommend and will try to convince you to see the room and stay there. But you can refuse and tell them you already have a reservation somewhere else, go out of the bus and take a taxi. Nevertheless, I used to stay in thos echeap hotels they recommended and couldn't complain of any... Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

A local boat (bikes at rear) by SirRichard If you want to have a boat ride in the Thu Bon River, you can hire a private rowing boat (with driver) for 2 USD/hour. But if you are in a budget, there are some local boats (see pic) that cross the river to transport people from one side to the other and are much much cheaper. You can take them near the market by the riverfront. Leave a Comment Theme: Ship/Boat

river travel in Hoi An by richiecdisc Getting to and from Hoi An is generally going to involve taking a bus. From the north, the train only goes as far as Danang so that is not an option. Many backpackers opt for the open ticket bus that runs from Hanoi to Saigon, where you can get off and back on again at a number of choice stops. It is by far the easiest and most economical way to do it. But for those wanting a bit more freedom, you might have to pay a bit more. We took the overnight train from Hanoi to Hue with a sleeper and this trip alone was more expensive than the bus all the way to Saigon but I love trains and we enjoyed it. From Hue, we grabbed a bus for $3 to Hoi An. It’s only a four hour trip and it stops on Hai Van Pass, Marble Mountain and Lang Co Beach. All of these stops are tourist traps so do not be surprised if you are besieged by people trying to sell you things. That is why they stop, not to let you take photos! Still, they are scenic places and with limited time, you at least get to see them this way. From Hoi An, we grabbed a bus to Saigon for $20. Again, this was a bit more than if we had booked the bus all the way down the coast but we got to leave the day we wanted and that is sometimes not the case if you pre-book with one company. Often a couple extra bucks gives you more freedom. We broke the trip up in Nha Trang, a great coastal town after ten long hours and continued to Saigon two days later on another long ten hour bus ride that made a brief stop in Mui Ne beach. After 24 hours on the bus, we were glad we paid the money for the train for the first leg of the trip! One thing you have to do in Hoi An is get out on the river. Local women will row you around for next to nothing but will try and sell you things while out there. There are less interesting though perhaps more hassle-free alternatives like the pictured tour boats. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Boat by muddybok Beside cyclo & bike (too fast to tour Hoi An), boat service across the river for bringing goods to wet market, passengers & also bicycle from the other side of river bank is consider quite convenient. I don't not know the fair across the river, but almost attempt to do it. What held me back was the overcrowded condition in the boat; also I don't know whether they will throw a foreigner like me into water for occupied spaces in their regular boat. You know? Big ass & tummy kind of thing!!? Leave a Comment Theme: Ship/Boat

For the un-initiated, this is our take on the over-night, open bus system. This was our first, and last experience. Wouldn't do it again. We booked Nha Trang to Hoi An for the overnight trip. I can't remember the cost, probably around US$10. We used Brothers Bus Company. We left Nha Trang at 6pm. After storing our luggage underneath, we boarded the bus, had to take our shoes off & carry them on the bus, no problem. The lay-out of the bus is 3 rows - one on each side with windows, and a middle row. You have a little alcove whereby you are supposed to be able to lie down & sleep. Well this may be well & good for shorties (I was able to lie down, but I am only 5 foot tall). For taller people, you have to sort of, lie sideways and curl your legs up (difficult, because so narrow), or lay on your back with your legs bent up. I had a spot in the middle row, with a TV set right in front of my face. They were playing Bruce Lee movies but we asked them to turn it off. I had my seatbelt on the entire journey as I kept picturing my face going thru the TV screen if we were in an accident. By the time we did all the pick-ups, and left Nha Trang, the bus was full. Even the extra special (extra long) bed for the alternate driver was sold. He had to sling up a hammock over the rear door where the toilet was. And mentioning the toilet, we didn't realise when we left Nha Trang, but when someone needed it - guess what - the toilet didn't work. Shame for the Italian man at the back of the bus who brought like a case of beer to drink for the journey. So the man in question (who was scary) had to demand that the bus stop whenever he needed to go. For the rest of us, we managed to hold on for the rest stop at around mid-night. We were able to get snacks & coffee as well. And there was a local at the stop with a pet chicken that liked to be patted. Cute. We were delayed at some point through the night by a traffic accident. We were held up for a few hours, the bus turned the engines off, and then back on again as it was so hot so we had some aircon. This went on for 2 hrs. The 12 hour trip turned into 14 hours and to make matters worse, we were dropped off outside Hoi An as the bus could not take us right into the centre. We had to drag our bags around town looking for a hotel. We found out later that the Hahn bus company was the better option. Theme: Bus

This is the vehicle we have been travelling with by sailor_p There are no airports in Hoi An. For international travellers, to get to Hoi An, the nearest airport is in Danang. From Danang, there are various options to travel to Hoi An. These options include open bus, public bus and private cars. For us, we have contacted Huong Giang Travel to pick us up from the airport and take us around Central Vietnam during our 4-day stay. The car the agency provided is clean and comfortable and the driver is a very careful person. We felt safe with him as our driver. The ride from Danang to Hoi An is only about 45 minute or less (depending on the traffic). So, do contact Huong Giang Travel for transport request. The agency is very reliable and replies to you promptly. At the same time, you may like to ask them about accomodation and tour programmes. I have used this agency for my HCMC amd Hanoi tours. They have not failed me so far! Leave a Comment
