Nice, isn't it? by SirRichard This lovely restaurant is just in the middle of the river, U can't get lost! They serve breakfast, though I found it very nice for dinners. Just be careful when is windy, it might move too much and you can get seasick for dessert! Near the An Hoy footbridge. lovely location to people watch by richiecdisc This had tourist trap written all over it. The location was too good to be true and as you can see from the photo, it was just too cute a place to not take a photo of. I most likely would never have given it a try but I noticed its strategic location near the footbridge and had to go in for a few photos if nothing else.
Since we had not planned on actually eating here, we went in on a full stomach and just ordered some beers. I was surprised to find the prices reasonable and the vantage point of the riverside seating was fantastic for taking photos of conical hat clad locals biking across the nearby bridge. white roses & fried wontons by richiecdisc This local institution has become a bit of a tourist attraction and though it might mean you are not the only non-Vietnamese in the place, it does mean someone speaks English so ordering is a lot easier than the old point and eat. The interior is quite nice in an old world sort of way and its Old Town location is quite convenient when out sightseeing.
When in Hoi An you should try both fried wontons and white roses and these local delicacies are reasonably priced here. The fried wontons are not the deep fried variety you get in the States but a nicely sautéed version more akin to pot stickers and very tasty indeed. The white roses are shrimp wrapped up like dumplings in dough and steamed. I found the shrimp a bit small but they were nonetheless yummy. The food and a beers came to 68,000 dong (a little over $4). local delicacy, cau lau by richiecdisc Quan Tam Ro was the true find of Hoi An when it came to food. We had already tried and been disappointed with the city delicacy, cao lau but this place’s version reaffirmed our faith in seeking out not only local foods, but truly authentic eating places to try them. We happened across it one afternoon walking just on the edge of the old town when we wanted to have a snack. Don't be put off by the simple exterior or interior, the food is great and the people who run it authentically welcoming.
Cao lau is a Ho An specialty of flat doughy noodles mixed up with bean sprouts, assorted greens, deep fried wonton dough and sliced roasted pork. We had tried it just the day before but this one put our first exposure to shame; it was just fantastic. We also discovered the best place in town for ice coffee and this lead us to having breakfast here every morning too. The prices were great and the owner was very friendly. Why not, we seemed to go there at least once a day and generally twice once we discovered his strange but tasty version of banana pancakes. Prices are very reasonable too. A breakfast of baguettes, eggs and ice coffee for two was 45,000 dong (less than three dollars). Banana pancakes with ice coffee for two was 27000 dong (less then two dollars. Cao lau was not much more. We were right.

D ready for another culinary surprise by richiecdisc Sometimes people ask me how I got so lucky when they meet Doreen and I generally smile and say it’s my cooking. It’s an inside joke between us but there is some truth to all good jokes. One thing she loves about me is my passion for trying local foods and our first trips together were filled with lots of what we call “snacking around.” What this entails is walking around as any traveler does, taking photos and enjoying the sights but always with our eyes (and noses) open for culinary offers. This place was just a few tables and chairs outside someone’s house. We noticed some young girls having a snack so we asked if we could try some too. They gladly obliged.
What we had we later found out was called banh dap. It was a crispy rice wafer on the outside with a gluey rice crepe of sorts on the inside. You dipped the tasty morsels into a fiery chili squid sauce that had roasted garlic on prominent display. It was yummy and came with free tea too. It was only 4000 dong (25 cents) for enough for the two of us. Just keep your nose open to what tickles its fancy.

A great place for afternoon tea by sailor_p Tam Tam Cafe is one of the most sought after cafes in the heart of Hoi An. Like other foreign invested cafes, this cafe serves a wide ranging of cuisine that satisfies the tastebuds of every visitor to Hoi An. With a unique two storey French Colonial House, the restaurant is a great place to unwind after a walk of the Old Town. Here, you can unwind and relax with a cup of tea. During our visit, we enjoyed ice-cream and tea. And not forgetting to mention, Tam Tam Cafe serves ice made with mineral water! A great place to visit! Leave a Comment

Cargo Club - A Place for Wine and Dine in Hoi An by sailor_p Well, it certainly pays to visit this restaurant housed in a two-storey ancient shophouse. Highly recommended by our local guide and the bell captain at the hotel, the Cargo Club Restaurant & Hoi An Patisserie certainly lives up to its name. During our stay at Hoi An, for two consecutive days, we patronised this eatery. During our two visits, the restaurant is crowded with guests. It certainly says a lot about its food and service! If you fancy a quick bite, coffee or lite lunch, check out the Hoi An Patisserie which offers a mouth-watering selection of freshly baked breads, delicious cakes and pastries together with a range of gourmet teas and coffees. The restaurant offers plenty of tasty meals from both Western and traditional Vietnamese menus on the second storey. For a romantic dinner, you may also consider choosing a table at the terrace that overlooks the Hoi An river. The night scene from the terrace is breath-taking! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the restaurant. We give 5 stars for this restaurant!
We sampled the western dishes from the kitchen. Try the tomato creme soup - it certainly leaves you wanting more. For main dish, try the tenderloin. Yummy! For a thick slab of succulent beef, you only pay less than USD7! It certainly costs more than twice the amount for the same quality and quantity in Singapore. For dessert, try both the mango and coconut tarts. You will not regret your choices! Enjoying the sights and sounds from Sakura by sailor_p For USD9 per person, you get to enjoy a 8-course lunch in a luxurious ancient house in Hoi An. With a great view of the Hoi An River, this restaurant is one of the favourite hang-out places by the visitors to the old town. The restaurant serves a wide range of cuisine, ranging from local dishes such as white roses and cao lau to Japanese cuisine. I was told that the restaurant was opened by a Vietnamese-Japanese couple. The place is clean and well-decorated. Service is good and it is worth a visit! A beautiful delicacy of Hoi An by sailor_p Like Cao Lau, another speciality of Hoi An not to be missed is the "White Rose". Many people like these cakes not only for their delicious flavor but also for their beautiful appearance. The French gave it the name of white roses. The cake is made from white rice flour and stuffed with cooked shrimp meat. The translucence of the flour along with the color of the shrimp meat gives it the apprearance of a white rose petal. And like Cao Lau, the "White Rose" is found on every menu in Hoi An. So remember to try to local dish when you visit Hoi An!
Personally, I prefer Cao Lau to "White Rose". Despite the attractive looks, I find the taste a little salty to my liking. Well, this is personal opinion. Still, I would encourage you strongly to sample this local delight if you are in the Old Town of Hoi An! Leave a Comment

It pays to get feedback! by sailor_p Sometimes it pays to get feedback before entering a restaurant. Upon our first night of arrival at Hoi An, we were really tired and were looking for food. Despite recommendation made by the hotel staff, we decided to venture our own and crossed the Hoi An River. Upon reaching the other side of the river, we saw a number of restaurants. Well, we were simply too tired and hungry and decided to walk into one of them. Well, for 45000VND per person (USD 4), we had a meal of 4 dishes. The dishes include Hoi An's specialities such as the white roses and cao lau. We waited for almost 45 minutes before the dishes arrived. Not only that, during this period, one of the staff was trying her best to hardsell some local handicraft products. We had to make a number of complaints before the dishes arrived. Well, the food was so-so and we decided not to stay back for dessert. Sometimes it pays to get feedback!
