A complete francophile - photos of old Paris society adorn the walls, Edith Piaf may greet you on the tape deck. One of those oh so simple restuarants - plastic table cloths, a dozen tables and a small upstairs option (but most of the tables spread out on to the footpath overlooking the river).
The owner proudly shows you press cuttings he has received from around the world and how Cafe des Amis was the favourite of Michael Cain when he was filming 'The Quiet American' a couple of years ago.
Favorite Dish: Set meal - your only decision is whether you want meat, veggie or fish. Once decided, settle back and see what turns up. What you receive is based on whatever was at its best and freshest at the market that morning. It really is very good.

Cao Lau can be easily found in most Vietnam cities. I was first introduced to Cao Lau at Hoi An, and i like those that serve in Trung Bac.
Trung Bac is an authentic local restaurant with more than 100 years of history. The furnishing may not look so old, but you'll fell very at home dining here.
P/s: My taste may differ from yours, so please don't hold me liable for anything.

It's not the cheapest place to eat but you'll never forget your supper.
The waiters are all young boys (10-11), have the broadest smile I've ever seen and are the friendliest guys in Vietnam.
They don't stop singing French tophits (Brel, Brassens, Piaf) and know the songs by heart because the owner keeps on playing the same cassette.
There is no choice what to eat. You pay 35.000 dong for four courses (mostly fish) and you can eat as much as you want.
Delicious

This one had a good write up in Lonely Planet so we went there for dinner one evening. It was just about Ok. The service was quite prompt and it had quite a long menu but we found the food a little disappointing.
We ordered the set menu for two persons. It was several dishes with a nice fish dish (fried in crumbs) but overall a little bland and boring. The Cao Lau was said to be a Hoi An speciality but it was nothing special at all.
A new edition of LP has hit the bookstalls and this restaurant is not in it.

The absolutely best restaurant in Hoi An is The Rose. It's a little place by the riverfront, with fantastic people working there. Like Trang, an 18 years old girl with a great smile and friendliness. Try it! Had my absolutely best meal in Vietnam here. You just have to try the fish in banana leafs! That's yummy for Jimmy!

Ideally located on the bank of the romantic Hoai river facing to a shadowy road with its tranquil, Brother's Cafe is the most beautiful restaurant in this ancient town. The very natural tropical garden gives you a very relaxing moment to have lunch or dinner inside it. Make yourselves a VIP to be at the extremely professional service of the waiters and waitress here and specially, all foods are excellent.
Favorite Dish: The restaurant is specified to serve the authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Being located by the river and just 3 kilometers from the beach, all kind of seafood here are very fresh such as BBQ Red Snapper with Chilli & Lemongrass. They are also offering chance to enjoy regional specialities such as Cao Lau, Wonton, "White Rose" Dumpling, Quang Nam Noodle...

Right down on the riverfront across the road from the local ferry. We sat out on the street the staff are very friendly, the food is very fresh and very nice.
Favorite Dish: My favourite dish was the chilli chicken with lemongrass and don't forget to have a fruit shake they are deliscious my favourite is pineapple but my firends all enjoyed the banana. It probably cost about $US10 for 4 of us to eat including fruit shakes & cokes.

This lovely restaurant is just in the middle of the river, U can't get lost! They serve breakfast, though I found it very nice for dinners. Just be careful when is windy, it might move too much and you can get seasick for dessert!
Near the An Hoy footbridge.
