colorful silk lanterns by richiecdisc Most people that go to Hoi An do some shopping. It is famous for its tailoring, especially suits and things made of silk. I am not a big shopper and I could not be bothered to haggle down the prices as is always necessary in Southeast Asia. One thing I would have liked to get is a silk lantern. These were very inexpensive compared to western prices.
Small lanterns were as little as a dollar but with a month left to travel, I didn't want to have it wind up crushed in my backpack by the time I got home. Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft

a great photo opportunity by richiecdisc Hoi An’s central market is one of Vietnam’s most colorful and a rightful attraction. Despite the flood of gaping tourists, it retains much of its local flair. It is a bustling and slightly chaotic affair, especially when trying to grab photos between your western counterparts!
Local fruits are always a great bargain. You can find things you'll not see back home and at great prices too. Try dragon fruit, a magenta colored beauty similar to kiwi.
You can get three dragon fruits for a dollar if you bargain hard. Leave a Comment Theme: Local CraftDirections: Between D Tran Phu and D Bach Dang, the central market is right in the heart of the Old Town.

The friendly people in this store can make an amazing variety of shoes in every colour under the rainbow. Run by a woman whose father makes all the shoes, the shoes are of fantastic quality and very cheap. I was with a group and all together we had seven pairs of shoes or boots being made. Disaster struck - the power was out for over 24 hours just after we ordered and we were leaving only 12 hours after power came back. The wonderful people in Nam Shoes Shop still had everything made in plenty of time for us to leave, even coming in several hours early to give us the shoes. They must have stayed up all night! The shoes are just amazing quality - I've practically lived in one pair of sandals for the past 4 months and they show no sign of breaking. I can't praise their work enough.
Shoes, shoes and more shoes! Sandals, sneakers (especially with beautiful silks) and books are all great choices. The different shoes they have in the shop are just examples of what they can do. They are happy to change any details to fit what you want, have a huge variety of colours and make them a perfect fit.
$US8-10 for sandals, $10-20 for normal shoes and $30-50 for boots. Theme: ShoesAddress: 11 Hoang Dieu, Hoi AnPhone: 0510 864594Directions: There are several stores along this street but look out for number 11, Nam Shoes Shop. They were just unbelievably great to deal with.

There are just tooooo many tailors in Hoian, I ended up getting stuff made at at least several different places and not always 100% pleased with what i got. However when I went to one shop (TRANG) a bunch of girls already in there couldn't recomend the shop more as the best place to get clothes (they wish they'd found it earlier). At all the other shops I ended up going to several fittings and they always told me it looked fine but there was just something not right. In TRANG nearly everything fitted first time and perfectly ( and i mean perfectly). If it didn't fit perfectly then the lady in there spotted it right away and knew exactly what was wrong......this is something rare as all other shops try to get away with not making alterations. She took real pride in fitting clothes. I noted she made more measurements than other shops, maybe thats why her clothes fittted so well ?!?!?!small orders were made that day or for the next morning (the short amount of time to make clothes worried me but quality of tailoring was good). She has 25 tailors that work for her and even contracts with tour operators that bring groups to her shop to be fitted out. Her prices were always reasonable at at no time did I think she was trying to get my money. i wish I never wasted my time with other tailors...altough one thing with TRANG is that she doesn't have as a wide range of fabric as other shops.
It depends on the material...... Speedy service at Long Silk by sailor_p Another shop worth taking a look is Long Silk Cloth Shop. Located next to the Japanese Bridge, this shop is able to churn out beautiful clothes from the latest catalogue designs. Not only that, I am impressed by the speedy service provided. During my visit, I spotted a beautiful cheongsum outside the shop. The staff was courteous and allowed me to try it on. However, I explained that I would not have 24 hours for making a brand new cheongsum as I would be flying back to Singapore the following day. Guess what, the staff assured me that the cheongsum would be produced in 2-hour time! I was a bit sceptical about what she said. Still, I decided to make my order as I was impressed with the wide range of beautiful fabric the shop carries. My fiancée and I went for a walk and a drink at one of the cafes. True enough, 2 hours later, the beautiful cheongsum was presented to me upon our return. I am totally impressed by the worksmanship. Moreover, the price was very reasonable. The service was great and according to its business card, the shop does not charge additional fee for credit car payment. If you have limited time in Hoi An, simply visit Long Silk Cloth Shop.
I paid USD18 for a long cheongsum (Chinese traditional costume) made of Chinese silk. In Singapore, it would cost about USD 40 to make a similar one using man-made silk. And it would take 2 weeks to produce! So, Hoi An is a great place for tailoring! Art Galleries in Hoi An by sailor_p Besides silk art, Hoi An is also filled with many art galleries. This shows that the locals are really gifted in the area of art. Visiting these art galleries would make you realise that the local artists enjoy water and oil painting. The subjects of the art pieces generally revolve around scenery of Hoi An, local ladies in "ao-dai" or the Vietnamese traditional costume or flowers. One such Art Gallery that is worth paying a visit is 155 Art Gallery. This art gallery is located next to the Japanese Covered Bridge and it offers art pieces at an affordable price. Not only that, the staff even helped me put the art pieces in brand new frames and packed them nicely so that the frames would not break. It's really worth taking a look and support the local art community.
I bought three small paintings at USD4. Each painting comes with a glass frame. Leave a Comment Theme: ArtAddress: 155 Tran Phu Street, Hoi AnPhone: 84.0510.861869Directions: Located near the Japanese Covered Bridge.

There is an overwhelming choice of tailors in Hoi An and it's difficult to know where to start. I went in to one of the first ones I'd seen and was reasonably happy with the results but had no idea whether the price ($140 for a women's suit jacket and 2 pairs of pants) was reasonable. I searched on-line and found a recommendation for B'Lan tailor, 23 Tran Phu Street from an Ex-pat who lives locally and I wasn't disappointed. I got a better suit for $60 and a fitted long sleeve cotton shirts for $8. I went back for another suit with skirt, a dress and three 'evening' type jackets. Lan, the owner of the shop, is a lovely lady and the quality and price are great.
Clothes, Clothes, Clothes! Either bring something you would like copied, or choose from a catalogue (often 'Next' directories).
As I said I paid $60 for two pairs of trousers and a jacket, $8 for a shirt, $45 for a 'fancy' jacket Theme: Men's ClothesAddress: B'Lan tailor, 23 Tran Phu StreetDirections: If you do go looking for the shop it's not obviously a tailors from the outside - it looks like a gem shop/antiques shop but the tailors is a the back. She obviously sells enough via word of mouth not to need a fancy shop front!

At number 7 stall by SirRichard After you pass the Central Market, along the river, you can find another building called the Tailors' Market. Here there are many tailor stalls where you can order customized clothes and suits. If you don't come with a fix idea, they will show you hundreds of pics of every immaginable model till you decide what you want. You can even indicate "this model, but with this neck and this pocket". In 2-3 hours you can return to pick up your order! Bargain the price in advance. You will have to leave a small deposit, a percentage of the total price. Leave a Comment Theme: Men's Clothes

Thien from Vu Thu Cloth Shop by Brisvegaskid We had been recommended to this shop by travellers who were previous customers. It is a family run shop and was not on the list used by tours or hotels....that means, you aren't paying commission to the tours or hotels on top of the cost of what you have made. The shop is run by Vang, her sister and brother Trang. Their young niece also helps out, Thien. They specialise in silks, linen, cashmere from the UK and natural fabrics. I had made two cashmere business suits, a silk pants suit, four cotton blend shirts; my teenage daughter had made a silk pants suit, a summer dress; my husband had made some fishing pants (don't ask) and my youngest daughter had made two tennis dresses, a cute dress and some fishing pants, just like Dad's, with pockets for gadgets and which zip off to shorts above the knee. They helped with choosing styles for the fabrics, could not do enough to get the clothes just right - but do leave reasonable time for this to happen. They aren't genies. They also lined all the suits, the summer dress and used quality zippers and invisible hems. (Other tailors whip around them with the sewing machine.) They are very concerned to understand what you want, need and are very personable. We enjoyed their company and were very pleased with our shopping here. We recommend them to you.

My $20 wedding suit bought in HoiAn! by aqazi I bet you anything that you can't visit Hoi An and come away with no new clothes. I tried and failed but did very well from what I've heard from other travellers. Hoi An is without doubt the cheapest place to buy tailor made clothes in Asia. I even thinks its cheap erthan in India. The thing you do have to be weary of is that the material is often not of the best quality so if you can take your own. Best place for that would be Bangkok or Singapore. When you go into the tailors they don't have much stuff on th eshelf to show you so have a good idea of what you want, some existing clothes you want copied or do as everyone esle does by picking out a design from one of their Next catalogues that they'll have. Make sure to ask for a lining where appropriate and don't asume they'll add one anyway. Also think about the weight of the material you're choosing compared to the design you want. Generally things take 24hrs but shirt can be done while you wait!! prices vary but count on; Short sleeve shirt $2-$3 long sleeved shirt $3 - $6 Silk shirts $6 - $10 Suit $15 - $30 You have to go back and try things on and make them do alterations if you're not sure or else it will be too late once you leave. Finally don't be surprised (if you're male) that the girls will tease you about your weight. I'm only 70kg and 5ft 8" and was teased about being overweight and neededd to go on a diet. Anyway clothes shopping has never been this much fun and I hate shopping. Enjoy. Leave a Comment Theme: Men's ClothesDirections: All over the town, if you don't find them, they'll find you.
