My trip to Hoi An was wonderful, except I and my friend got rip off when we bought four suits at ADONG SILK (40 Le Loi), they lied to us about their quality, we paid more than double price for the same material as the other shops in the area. We shouldn’t take recommendation from NAM HAI Hotel staffs on Hamlet 1, Dien Duong Village | Dien Ban District at the first place, I believed they had some kind of connections for their own benefit. Don’t make the same mistake as I did with ADONG SILK.

Hoi An trip: I and my wife stayed at Hoi An Hotel for 2 nights. We heard lots about custom made clothes in Hoi An, so we were exciting to get our clothes made. The Hotel receptionist asked us if we wanted to get our clothes made, and we said yes, then she recommended us to ADONG SILK on 62 Tran Hung Dao, we ordered two coats, one suit, two shirts and three dresses, the price was very expensive so we bargained to get the price down to almost half, we thought we got very good deal. When we came back for fitting, most of our clothes were not even closed to our measurement, so I asked the sale lady “are you sure that you got our measurement right?” She seemed to blame on tailors, and she asked us to come back later. We decided to shop around and compared the quality of fabric and price, we realised that other shops had same fabric with much cheaper price than ADONG SILK. Later on the same day, we came back for 2nd fitting, but our clothes still were not fitting, they seemed like even worse than before. We also asked why their price was much higher than other shops with the same fabric, and sale lady kept saying that their tailors were better. That was why we checked the sewing on the clothes they looked terrible, it had so many mistakes, there were quite few travellers had the similar complaints about quality and price, we decided to ask them fix it. Next day we came back for 3rd fitting, the clothes didn’t seem any better, we were so angry because we didn’t have much time left for more fittings. So we ended up taking our clothes and went back to Hotel, I was disappointed with their QUALITY, OVERPRICE and TAILORING. Please save your $$$, don’t come to this place, and don’t take advice from HOI AN Hotel staffs who recommended for their own benefit.

Anyone getting clothes made in Hoi An avoid "ADONG SILK", I bought 2 suits and 5 shirts, and I paid over $1000 US. When I ordered my clothes there they said good fabrics and great tailors, but they turned out polyester and horrible tailor, I came back 5 times to try my clothes, but they were not fit at all, suits were too tight, shirts are too big, and sewing is terrible. They seemed so unhappy everytime I came back for fitting and had to wait very long, it looked like they didn't care anymore, but when I started to order my clothes they were very nice and friendly. When I was waiting for fitting and realized that few people had the same problems as I did, I was so disappointed / unhappy, and asked for my money back, but they didn't give me and also gave me hard time. It was too bad I couldn't stay in Hoi An any longer, so I left Hoi An without my deposit money or clothes.
I don't recommend anyone to ADONG SILK

In Hoi-An we were staying in the Lotus Hotel.
About 100m up the road towards the town center, on the day of our departure, my wife spotted some beautiful skirts and dresses outside a shop. The sign said: "Minh Tri Tailor, retail sale and whole sale all kinds of material, Chinese silk, raw silk, Vietnamese silk, rayon, cotton, linen and velvet... We make all kinds of clothes... Copy 100% exactly..."
We only had 4 more hours in Hoi An, and did not really plan on buying tailor-made clothes there; however, the lady in the shop insisted that she could make a skirt to measure out of my wife's favorite cloth right on time, and bring it to our hotel. We were somewhat incredulous but decided to go for it. Four hours later the lady came to our hotel lobby, all smiles, and brought the finished skirt, to my wife's full satisfaction.
What to pay: Much less than at home...

Whatever you want to shop for, a good time to do it is the midday heat. When temperatures reach 35°C, it's time for siesta even for the most enterprising Vietnamese - so they will sleep or doze somewhere in the shady back of their shop while it is still open. This is your chance: you'll now be able to walk around and peek into the shops undisturbed by the shopkeepers. Use it! Hoi An will never be this quiet again...
Btw, it's no problem to buy at that time - just enter the shop and the shopkeeper will immediately spring to life and start selling you things! ;)
What to buy: everything your heart desires
What to pay: see above

While some tourists may really come to Hoi An because of its world heritage status, I suppose the majority has heard of its reputation to be Vietnam's clothes mekka and wants to shop till they drop. Well, off you go!
Hoi An is an incredible place indeed. The first thing you'll see, whether you arrive at 6am or 10pm, is an open tailor shop and a woman waving you in: "Hello Siiiir, hello Maaaaam, take a look into my s'op, please!" Inside, there's a giant selection of different coloured fabrics, ranging from cotton to silk, and a rather small selection of possible clothes that can be tailored made-to-measure. Don't be irritated by this - Hoi An's tailors can tailor everything you want. And by everything, I mean everything. Whether you need a new winter coat, a silk sleeping gown, an extravagant blouse or simple linen trousers - you'll get it here. Moreover, it'll be finished the next morning, no matter how complicated to tailor. When I visited Hoi An in 2004, I decided at 8.30pm that a new, tailor-made polo shirt would be nice. As I had to leave at 8am the next morning, I asked to have it delivered to my hotel. At 7am, I received it! Yet, this is not enough: more or less everything of what you order is high quality. Should you not be satisfied with what you get, just tell the tailor and a day later everything that you claimed will be changed.
As competition is incredibly tough here, the prices are at a minimum. My girlfriend and I had 8 pieces tailored for $88: two dresses, one skirt, one blouse, three shirts and one pair of linen trousers. We went to Thai Ha in Hoang Dieu street, but all of the other shops will have more or less the same offer.
What to buy: whatever your heart desires: shirts, skirts, blouses, dresses, trousers, night gowns, shoes, hats, suits... everything that can somehow be tailored in every colour made of every fabric
What to pay: Dress: starting at $10
Skirt: starting at $8
Shirt: starting at $10
Pants: starting at $8
Generally, everything depends on your talent to barter and on how much you buy at the same shop. If you want to have, say, two dresses, you'll be likely to get a 30-50% discount for the second one.
