Were went to Hoi An as part of a tour and initially had not plans to have anything made after hearing so many horror stories. However, another couple of the tour had had a recommendation from friends of theirs to go to Yaly and our tour guide also told us it was the "top" tailors in Hoi An. We decided to go and had a wonderful time! We wished we had thought about it before (others had brought photos with them of what they wanted made - we looked through the magazines they had). We were very happy with what we got and wear it. Some others on the tour went to cheaper tailors (there are over 600 in Hoi An) and had mixed results - a couple of pieces were great, others were shoddily made
What to buy: We had work clothes made - 2 wool cashmere suits, 2 pairs of trousers, 5 shirts, 2 raw silk lined skirts, 3 lined line dresses, a tailored silk trouser suits for a wedding.
What to pay: Grand total for all of ours was $US500. You can get things made for less but often you get what you pay for...

Of all the things to describe to buy in Hoi An, it's sort of strange that this is my only tip. This woman became my shadow. I buy (almost) any street food I can find, and I thought peanut brittle would be interesting. It WAS unexpected to see peanut brittle, for some reason. I'm not sure why.
Anyway, I think I was this woman's first customer of the day so I made her 'lucky, lucky, lucky!' and I kept running into her, and she gave me even more peanut brittle and even a little bracelet (not edible!) as some sort of friendly gesture.
What to buy: Peanut brittle.

This was a newly opened shop owned by two young girls. The speed, quality and cost of craftsmanship was brilliant. I bought a long winter coat for approx. $19- and i still use it 3 years later, this would have cost me hundreds at home. If you get them to record your measurments you can contact them via e-mail when back home to make you some more stuff. See attached photo of their business card.
What to buy: Formal wear as it's the most expensive back home. Research some ideas of what you want before you leave home and bring them with you.
What to pay: The price will depend on the item but it is very resonable.

This is where you can buy the cheapest souvenirs, cheaper than anywhere else in Vietnam!! Wide-range of authentic handicraft products, beer T-shirts, custom-made shoes (recommended), fashion accessories and home decoratives.
No offense -- but this is the truth
If you're into pirate goods or fake products like The North Face, Lowe Alpine, Nike or whatever, Hoi An is gonna be your shopping paradise.
Anyway, everything is overpriced for tourists. Just ask for 50% discount, it's possible, don't give up easily!!
What to buy: Chinese-style lanterns
Custom-made shoes
Fashion accessories

Trust me, almost all the shops in Hoi An can made-to-measure whatever design you want inclusive of men's clothes. This shop is recommended by my sis-in-law's friend.
They tailor make jackets, trousers, bermudas, cargo pants, skirts, shirts, dresses, blouses, komonos, sleeping bad liners, underwears, bras & etc. All they need is the photo from any magazine. They'll take your measurement & deliver to your hotel on the next day. If you are not satisfy, they can alter until you're satisfy.
What to buy: Bring your favourite fashion magazine & let them create wonders for you!
What to pay: US$5 for a pair of bermudas.

The friendly people in this store can make an amazing variety of shoes in every colour under the rainbow. Run by a woman whose father makes all the shoes, the shoes are of fantastic quality and very cheap. I was with a group and all together we had seven pairs of shoes or boots being made. Disaster struck - the power was out for over 24 hours just after we ordered and we were leaving only 12 hours after power came back. The wonderful people in Nam Shoes Shop still had everything made in plenty of time for us to leave, even coming in several hours early to give us the shoes. They must have stayed up all night! The shoes are just amazing quality - I've practically lived in one pair of sandals for the past 4 months and they show no sign of breaking. I can't praise their work enough.
What to buy: Shoes, shoes and more shoes! Sandals, sneakers (especially with beautiful silks) and books are all great choices. The different shoes they have in the shop are just examples of what they can do. They are happy to change any details to fit what you want, have a huge variety of colours and make them a perfect fit.
What to pay: $US8-10 for sandals, $10-20 for normal shoes and $30-50 for boots.
