Japanese old bridge by albaaust Just walking through the old town and having a look on the outside without entering the building can be enough to get a "feel" for the place. This was the case for us with the Japanese bridge. We did have a ticket but it was so crowded with tourists we decided that we would not "fight" our way onto the bridge.

Chinese All-Community Assembly Hall front entrance by kelnsha, 2 more photos Founded in 1773, the Chinese All-Community Assembly Hall or Ngu Bang Hoi Quan, sometimes referred to as Chua Ba (Goddess Temple) was used by the Fujian, Cantonese, Hainan, Chaozhou & Hakka congregations in Hoi An. Unusually for an assembly hall, this was a mutual aid society open to any Chinese trader or seaman, regardless of dialect or region of origin. The hall helped shipwrecked and sick sailors and performed burial rites for merchants with no relatives in Hoi An. Built in 1773 as a meeting place for all five groups (listed above) and for those with no clan house of their own, it now contains a Chinese school, Truong Le Nghia, where children of the diaspora learn the language of their forebears. The pavillions off the main courtyard incorporate elements of 19th-century French architecture. Leave a Comment Address: 31 Phan Chu Trinh StreetDirections: The main entrance to the assembly hall is located on Tran Phu street. However, the only way to get inside these days is to enter from around the back at 31 Phan Chu Trinh street and admission is free.

Confucius Temple by sieffron Although not as old or revered as Hanoi's Confucius shrine, the Temple of Literature, Hoi An's Confucius Temple evidences the ancient Chinese scholar's influence deep into Vietnam. It is also a good example of Chinese architecture in Hoi An and has a serene setting. Plus, admission into Confuicus Temple is free, a rarity amongst Hoi An's sites. Leave a Comment

I wouldn't call this bridge beautiful, I wouldn't even call it pretty. But it is an unmistakable symbol of Hoi An. It was built in the 17th century and used to link the quarters inhabited by the Chinese and Japanese communities. It's a covered bridge with a little temple inside (you can enter it with a ticket). On both ends of the bridge there are altars with its guardians. On one end there are two monkeys, on the other two dogs. Why? It is said that the construction of the bridge was started in the year of the monkey and finished in the year of the dog. Leave a Comment

The entrance ticket to Hoi An attractions entitles you to attend one concert of traditional music or to visit an artisan workshop. We found out that concerts were given twice a day in an artisan shop in Nguyen Thai Hoc. So it's possible to combine two events at the same time. We came to the shop about twenty minutes before the scheduled start of the concert, which turned out to be a good decision, as the room was filling up with tourists very quickly. We enjoyed the show, especially the dances performed by a couple of charming young girls. The whole programme didn't last longer than half an hour, after which we visited the shop. I was especially impressed by colourful pictures embroidered by skillful artisans. We also watched wood carvers and lantern makers at work. Leave a Comment Address: Nguyen Thai Hoc

Photo from: www.hoianworldheritage.org by sieffron A Mandarin civil servant, Tran Tu Nhac, built this house in 1802 as a gift to his ancestors soon after his appointment as an ambassador to China. The house is divided into two parts: the main area is a place for worship; the auxiliary area is living quarters. Tran family members still own the house and visit to pray for support from deceased ancestors. Family members also operate the house as a museum for visitors. No photography is permitted inside. Hoi An is really about walking around and admiring the place. The majority of building's have a French feel to them and the people of Hoi An have made an effort to maintain this.
