Kayaking in HaLongBay at 10c by bpacker This is a must, even in 10c weather conditions, how else are you going to see the awesome limestone structures up close? Of course, it'll be better during summer but I wasn't going to leave this out now that I was here! I paddled out ( sadly without my camera ) and saw caves, corals and amazing limestone formations. Jade green lakes, Catba National Park by bpacker Now, you'll only have time for treking thru' CatBa National Park when you take the 3D trip to Ha Long Bay. To me, this was the highlight of the trip. Not only did I get to see some native flora and fauna but I got to see awesome scenary and many opportunities to see how the local folk live.. Leave a Comment

Sung Sot Cave by bpacker Hang Sung Sot simply means cave of awe and aptly named too. Every tourist that comes in here will drop their jaw when they see the awesome limestone formations inside the cave. Of course, it might drop even further when they catch the view from the top of the cave. Read on to see the view from the top.. You'll definitely pay a visit to Sung Sot whether you're on a 3d or 2d trip to Halong Bay. Of course, when you're there, do look out for the cheeky "male anatomy rock" (VT prohibits the use of the actual word ) and grafitti dating back to the 1960's.. Leave a Comment

Hi Ho, Hi Ho, Off the merry seas I go! by bpacker Nothing completes the picture of a romantic Ha Long Bay more than a couple of junks in red or yellow sails, right? Looking at them conjures the image of ancient Chinese naval exploration and if you're on one of them, you'll feel like Admiral Cheng Ho*! *He's the famous Chinese admiral who sailed half across the world in 1421. Claus taking a puff from the village pipe of peace by bpacker Take a 3D trip to Ha Long Bay if you can afford the time, you won't regret it. Whilst the 2D trip offers you a grand spectacle of the bay, the 3D trip offers a further insight to the lives of the local folk. After treking for 6km in the National Park, we went to Viet Hai Village and had an interesting cultural exchange session. Here's a picture of my German friend enjoying a puff on the local water pipe called a "dieu cay ". Needless to say, I wasn't offered a puff. Wanna know why? Click here... Leave a Comment

Kayak exploration by Wild_Orchid The best way to explore Halong Bay is on a Kayak. You can be as lazy or active as you like. With a few pointers from your ship captain, you could paddle to little caves, deserted beaches, grottos or mini tourist towns for a drink. As for me I'm not that adventurous and was not keen to explore too far out. Furthermore, my colleague was not a strong swimmer (despite the life jacket, he wasn't that confident) So, wherever we went, I always made sure that our boat was in sight. In hindsight, the bay is really calm and there was never a danger of the kayak overturning so we could have gone further out. When I told others in our group, there were a few who regretted not joining us. Instead, they had spent their time singing karaoke on board and we could hear them from where we were! What a laugh! If you have time, please check out my off the beaten path for a related story. Leave a Comment Address: Bai Tho Cruises

Buy my Bait? by Wild_Orchid As our boat was leaving the harbour, a little boy (girl ?) clambered onto the outside ledge of our boat, and offered to sell us a some fishing rods made of bamboo, complete with live bait - medium sized shrimp in plastic bottles. Some in our group were alarmed and worried about the safety of the little boy (girl?) because our boat continued to move at a good speed, and a few others contemplated that it might be okay to buy the bait in order to have a fishing competition later on. Well, finally, after a bit of discussion, our group shelled out US$1.00 each per bamboo rod and bottle of bait, and there were 6 of us who "succumbed". The boy was accompanied by his mother who rowed the boat, and there was also a little baby on board. The enterprising woman also asked us for US$1 per photo but in the end we decided that we might as well buy the fishing rods instead. Leave a Comment Address: Halong Bay

happy to be sailing of at last! by Wild_Orchid Hand your passports to your tour guide or the immigration official. Carry your bags (and additional shopping bags...) down some rather steep steps with no hand rails. Climb on board the Bai Tho Cruise Ship. Next, look for the nearest available cabin and dump your bags there, thereby effectively "booking" it for the duration of your trip. You're now on your way to cruise the beautiful world heritage listed Ha Long Bay. Practice some patience as our group of 21 persons had to wait for almost an hour to get our passport details captured by the immigration authorities. We spent the time fruitfully snapping pictures of the surrounding harbour and the denizens of the sea, and of course, each other. He He He. Leave a Comment Address: Set off from the Harbour
