Umbrella

Miscellaneous: Hue's weather is infamously bad: the Truong Son Mountains just to the south seem to bottle up all the moisture, so it's usually misty, drizzly or outright rainy. Things get even wetter than usual in the winter rainy season, especially from February to the end of March. To be safe, bring along an umbrella any time of year. It was drizzling all day when I went on my Perfume River trip which spoilt it a little.

Rain drops keep falling on my head

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Although it’s too necessary to pack a lot of rain gear for Hue, you should have an umbrella to get to your hotel. The reason why I say its too necessary is because you can pick up really cheap high quality rain gear in town. I got a fantastic rain poncho for a buck fifty. How can you go wrong?

Mosquito Repellant

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Vietnam is not, as some people might imagine, a mosquito-infested country. Far from it. As another traveller said to me, you get more mosquio bites in Europe than you do here.

But, the one place where I did get bitten was in Hue. This city is one of the wettest in Vietnam, and of course the Perfume River has plenty of still waters adjacent to its banks.

So, if the cities had made you wonder why you bothered packing mosquito repellent, Hue will reassure you that you made the right decison.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Hué has a special climat. Where in the north or south of Vietnam there is a dry season at some time in the year, in Hué it appears to be raining the whole time. Not so nice if you want to explore this lovely city by bicycle or just on foot.

Footwear for the flood

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Slippers! Or you might find yourself wading in flood water in your walking/trekking shoes and they get really uncomfortable if you have to wear them for hours after they are drenched!

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: If you have a waterproof jacket, bring it with you. Alternatively you could purchase one of these nifty little numbers for a bargin price!
