 | Hue Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 49 | | This popular local restaurant (close to another local restaurant called Lac Thanh) is run by deaf waiters. There is a lively bar in the basement ground, full of locals drinking and playing cards and so... If you ask for a table, they take you upstairs, to a very simple but charming room with a terrace. On the way up, pay attention to the kitchen, a real antique... I asked for some typical Hue dishes. First, shrimp pancakes. Then, rolling tortillas made of rice paper with meat, salad and some sauces... a "make it yourself" dish. And a Tiger beer, of course! Simple and delicious. Price: 2 USD. You have to meet Thuy. This little, open-air restaurant is her pride and joy. The service is excellent and the food is good too. It is a pleasant place to sit drinking beer and watching the world go by. Thuy Thien stands at the end of a row of three open air cafes at the northern end of Hung Vuong Street. They all serve a range of local dishes and traveller's fare, and all have menus in English and French. Thuy herself speaks good English. Lac Thanh Restaurant is on the corner, next door to Lac Thien Restaurant. They serve the same food - banh khoai and nem lui, at the same prices and look pretty much the same. According to the Moon Handbook, Lac Thanh was actually the original one and Lac Thien the imitator, but "both claim to be the real one...it appears they may all be related - and there was a split in the family business." This one, Lac Thanh, the one on the corner, is run by a family of deaf-mutes. It is said that the owners of Lac Thien, next door, also pretended to be deaf-mutes, but when I was there, perhaps because it was Tet, they chatted away like crazy. In fact, when I was eating in Lac Thanh, the eldest daughter from Lac Thien, where I had eaten the day before, walked by and said, "Enjoy your meal". So, how do they stack up? Well, I found the food at Lac Thanh marginally better, but I much preferred the atmosphere at Lac Thien. My advice? Try them both and see what you think. A banh khoai costs 5,000 VND at both retaurants. Really, you need two of those to fill you up. Huda beer, brewed in Hue, costs 8,000 VND.
Banh khoai, of course. The friendly, family-run, Lac Thien Restaurant is one of the two best restaurants in Hue in which to try the most famous local dishes, Banh Khoai and Nem Lui.
Banh Khoai is a type of stuffed crepe, accompanied by peanut sauce. This is one of a row of three mini restaurants or street cafes, in Hung Vuong Street, frequented by travellers. Thuy Thien is next door. Their signs and menus are in English and French, but they do get some local customers: mostly local youngsters who like to sit here amongst the foreigners and drink beer. There appears to be some rivalry between the restaurants in the day-time, when they are fairly quiet, but they all seem to be full to overflowing in the evenings and everybody is happy. They serve a range of local dishes plus the usual traveller's fare. Hue, a city highly associated with Chinese culture, is famous for its oriental cuisine. One such Hue speciality not to be missed is Banh Khoai, or 'Hue Happy Pancake'. Banh Khoai is a pancake made with batter of rice flour and corn fried with egg, it is then wrapped with fillings consisting pork or shrimp, onion, bean sprouts and mushrooms. What I like about this speciality is the crispy crepe-like crust and tasty hot fillings. It is definitely best eat it when hot and in cool weather! Banh Khoai is available in almost every restaurant or cafe in Hue. So, if you happen to be in Hue, remember to order this "Happy Pancake" dish! Situated near the Perfume River and well-known Huong Giang Hotel, the Temple Restaurant is simply a cosy restaurant to unwind in the evening and sample local cuisine. After having travelled almost 2.5hrs on the car, direct from Danang upon our arrival, the Temple Restaurant is a great respite for two weary and hungry souls from Singapore! Highly recommended by our local guide, the restaurant is located at the stretch of road filled with shops, cafes and bars. The restaurant is also about 10 minute from our hotel. For USD7 per person, we enjoyed a total of 8 course dinner over candlelight- literally! The ambience is great, not too noisy and the service is good. The waiter ensures that our care is well-taken off. I would say this would be a great stop if you wish to have a comfortable dinner with little luxury.
The restaurant aims to serve local cuisine that showcases the culinary skills of the local. We had an enjoyable dinner, especially having tasted the local Hue Pancake. We love the pancake and the other dishes suit our tastebud. Thumbs up! Hue is famed for its culinary expertise and this was the best food we ate with the exception of Restaurant Bobby Chinn in Hanoi. You have the choice of outdoor dining in the garden (a covered, raised terrace where there are about 8 tables or 2-3 secluded tables set in the shrubbery - ideal romantic environment!) or the larger indoor main building. Every evening there is unobtrusive traditional music played live from 7-9pm in the main building.
the food is spectacular - from the mini vegetarian spring rolls through to the various main dishes. Note that the menu can be a little confusing as there is no division between entrees and main - and working on the assumption that the lower prices are entrees is wrong! So its a bit of trial and error - we ordered way too much food on one occasion and only just enough the 2nd! As highlighted in one of my "Things to Do" tips, Hue's garden houses is worth paying a visit. Many of such houses are opened to tourists and a number of them have been converted into restaurants. One such garden house is the Y Thao Garden House. Built fifty years ago, the 2-storey Y Thao house is filled with ancient charm. The owner tries her best to keep the original state of the house. This is evidence by the antique used in every aspect of the house. In addition, the garden is well landscaped. In the main hall, the ancient ceremics used by Hue royalty family is displayed in the rose-wood cupboard. The Y Thao is an ideal place for catching up over lunch or dinner. The food is well-prepared and during our visit, at least one of the Hue "royal" dish is included in our menu. The owner is also a lover of dogs. A number of well-kept dogs were seem running in the house. We thought it's a joy till one of them decided to park itself at the table next to us and ermmm.... it did its daily "business". Yucks! Thank God for the prompt response from the staff, the mess was quickly cleared.
One of the unique dishes which we thoroughly enjoyed was the desert. We thought that it was a floral arrangement till we looked at it carefully. It was cakes made with green bean paste, fashioned after fruits. The "fruits" came in stalks in a vase. It really made us thought that we were presented with a floral display after our lunch! We were really fooled but the green bean paste cakes were really yummy! When in Hue, you must have dinner at Lac Thien, which has become a kind of tourist pilgrimage point thanks to it being prominently featured in Lonely Planet. There a few things that make Lac Thien unique. First, several of the family members who run the place are deaf. The elderly mother works the very simple kitchen, which can be seen as you enter to find your table, and she turns out some delicious local cuisine, including their famous savory shrimp crepes that Lonely Planet calls "Happy Crepes". The father, who is deaf, is famous for his homemade bottle openers, which are nothing more than a piece of wood with a screw and bolt stuck into one end. Apprently, in the old days bottle openers could not be found in Hue, so this resourceful man invented his own. Simply order a Huda beer and he will personally demonstrate his invention for you (see photo). He will also gladly make one for you on the spot to take home as a souvenir. In addition, he showed us a photo album containing pictures that previous visitors had sent him of his bottle opener being used all around the world. He even writes his mailing address directly on the bottle opener to encourage visitors to send in photos of themselves using it in different locations. Quite a character this guy! Lac Thien has become so successful and well known that many of their neighbors have opened up similar restaurants with similar names in order to trick tourists into thinking their restaurant is the one mentioned in lonely planet. So right next door to Lac Thien you will find the imposter Lac Thanh. They even have signs saying "as mentioned in Lonely Planet". But don't be fooled, make sure you go to the real Lac Thien and ignore any other place with a similar but slightly different name.
Most things are undoubtedly good here, but you have to try the shrimp crepes and make sure you don't leave without your bottle opener. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 6 Dinh Tien HoangDirections: close to river and citadel
