This down to earth Sidewalk cafe is really excellent. The 2 times we went there, the diners were a mix of locals, expats, and lucky/savvy travellers like ourselves. Service is prompt and friendly, and the food is just superb. Prices are par for Vietnam, which means you get amazingly delicious plates for around $2-$3. You won't regret eating here. The Vietnamese restaurant I remember with the biggest smile is the Lac Thien which we visited in Saigon and Hue. As far as we understood, the first restaurant was in Hue and then the restaurant in Saigon opened. The owner in Saigon is the sister of the owner in Saigon. As most of his seven brothers and sisters he’s dumb. Most of the other family members live in Hue. Although he can’t speak he “told” us a lot of interesting things about his family – but you should go there yourself :-)
By the way: The food is the same in both restaurants and very good. I can recommend the Vietnamese pancakes with shrimp, vegetable, meat, salad and peanut-sauce but I have to say that it’s not much. The noodles with shrimp and vegetable are also very good. And if you go home the owner probably will give you one of his great self-made bottle openers. This restaurant was highly recommended by lonely planet and we were not disappointed on this occasion. The menu was extensive and included some exotic ways to cook a frog! Our waitress spoke good English and was very helpful explaining the dishes and ensuring that our meal had a good balance of items. She even stopped us ordering too much food. The Spring rolls were not what we expected – they were the make it yourself style. Seeing our confusion she demonstrated what we needed to do to make them and boy were they good. We enjoyed an excellent dinner at a very reasonable price. There were two annoyances however. We chose to eat outside in the garden as everyone else was out there. The proximity to the street meant constant noise from the youth of Hue riding round in circles on their motorbikes and secondly there was a stream of children offering various items for sale from shoeshine to cigarettes.

Cafe on Thu Wheels by Clodagh This cafe is owned by Thu, a woman with mountains of energy, so she can be a little in your face but she is very helpful. This tiny bar-cafe has loud music, good food and friendly staff that run excellent motorbike tours around Hue. Both are popular with travelers and open late. The walls and ceiling are covered with graffiti from travellers from all over the world.
Nothing overly interesting just good to fill you up and they have a good selection of booze too. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Opposite the Thai Binh at 10/2 Nguyen Tri Phuong.

by leffe3 Gorgeous little vegetarian cafe found in the same street as the hotel we were staying in (D De Loi). Nothing more than a covered terrace of a colonnial building - open all 4 sides, but still exudes atmosphere and charm - and the food is good and incredibly cheap!

Hang Me by Blatherwick This is a good place to try some local cuisine. They serve Banh Nam (shrimp and pork with sticky rice in a banana leaf), white rose, and a few others done in the region. The neat thing is to watch the people making the food in the corner. Mr. Lac and I by Blatherwick Mr. Lac is amazing. He is the owner of the restaurant and is deaf. However, he communicates quite clearly and I sat down with him for about 15 minutes. It turns out that he has 7 daughters. Most of them work at the restaurant and they speak English. At the end of the "conversation" Mr. Lac gave me one of his coveted bottle openers. Back in the day when bottle openers could not be found this man came up with a solution of putting together a piece of wood with a screw and bolt stuck into one end. The other things that I love about this restaurant is his photo album of all sorts of people that he has given a bottle opener to and written back when they got home. The decor of the restaurant is comments from satisfied customers. The restaurant puts out great food as well. Definitely try the Banh Khoai or any of the other local dishes offered for 15,000 dong.
Banh Khoai -- a kind of crispy salty crépe made of eggs and rice flour, filled generously with bean sprouts, pork and shrimp and dipped in a special sauce.
