Walls and giant flag in The Citadel by SirRichard The Citadel is the huge (10 km. perimeter) area located at the north of the Perfume River. You will access to it by one of the 2 bridges over the Perfume. If you pass by the southern one (Phu Xuan) you will be right in front of the "Forbidden Purple City", former Imperial Palace. Around this complex of buildings, pagodas and palaces there are many tree lined streets with many official buildings and museums. Is not a residential area. Leave a Comment

The huge urns by SirRichard These 9 2 meters high metal urns (about 2000 kgs each) were cast in 1835 to symbolise the Nguyen dinasty sovereigns. They depict nature designs (clouds, sun, moon...) upon ancient (2.000 BC) chinese designs. They can be found near the The To Mieu Temple, inside the Imperial Enclosure. Leave a Comment

The Entrance gate by SirRichard This is the main entrance to the Imperial Enclosure. Here is the ticket office and the only entrance to the palaces. From here the Emperor watched the Military Parades and talked to the people... Once you go through the tunnel, at your left you will find stairs to climb to the 1st floor. There you can see the huge gong, some nice pictures and the halls, which are correctly restored. Leave a Comment

by iwys The Citadel was the imperial palace from the early nineteenth century until the mid-twentieth century. Emperor Gia Long, who ruled Vietnam form 1802 to 1819, based it on the Forbidden City in Beijing. It consists of three walled enclosures. The outermost enclosure contains an area of 6 square kilometres, which was once filled with hundreds of buildings. Many of the palace buildings were destroyed during the Tet offensive of 1968, when the Vietcong and NVA held out here for 24 days, but it is still a very impressive place. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and restoration work is taking place. Eventually, it is planned that all of the palace buildings will be rebuilt or restored. by iwys The 7-tiered Phuoc Duyen Tower is the symbol most associated with Hue. It was built in 1844. Each level contains an altar dedicated to a different Buddha. A flight of steps ascend to the tower from the river bank. It is part of the Thien Mu temple complex. In traditional Vietnamese pagodas, the prayer hall was usually a one-story building and the multi-tiered towers were used for storing holy relics. Main Gate of Ming Mang Tomb by sailor_p The tombs of the rulers of the Nguyen dynasty are extravagant mausoleums that were constructed along the banks of the Perfume River. There are a number of them but should you have limited time, I would strongly recommend you to visit the Tomb of Minh Mang. The Royal Tomb of Minh Mang is described by the Lonely Planet as the most majestic of all the tombs in Hue. It was recorded that Minh Mang ruled Vietnam between 1820 and 1840. The tomb of Minh Mang was planned during his lifetime and was built between 1841 and 1843 by his successor. The compound of this royal tomb is huge. It consists of the Honour Courtyard, Stele Pavilion, Sung An Temple, Lake of Impeccable Clarity, Minh Mang Pavilion, Lake of New Moon and of course the burial place. However, the burial place is closed to the public. However, according to the local guide, the actual burial place is not exactly known - this is similar to the practices by many Chinese emperor where the burial places are unknown to outsiders. The so-called burial place may not be the real point of burial for Ming Mang. According to our local guide, many researchers visit the tomb to pinpoint the exact location but still they could not find it. So, if you are curious enough, perhaps, you may find it during your visit! The Tomb of Ming Mang is also one of the stops along Perfume River though it is possible to reach the place by car. Flight of stairs leading to the temple from river by sailor_p There are a number of sites worth stopping during your cruise down the Perfume River. One such stop is the Hon Chen Temple. Surprisingly, not many tourists visited this temple as it is considered to be out of the "common" route. The Hon Chen Temple is located 10km upstream of Hue. To reach the temple located on top of a hill, you need to walk up a flight of steps from the river bank. The boat will try to moor near the bank so that you can begin your climb up the hill. The temple is seated on a lovely site overlooking the beautiful waters of Perfume River. This temple is worth visiting for its picturesque view of the river. Today, the temple is visited by the locals to worship the Heaven Goddess Y A Na. Leave a Comment

The Museum building by SirRichard This beautiful building is located at the right of the Imperial Enclosure, inside the Citadel. It is not a real must in the city visit, but it is nice and interesting if you have some spare time. The building and the garden around it are outstanding. Inside there are many precious items, though the main part was lost during the War.
