Ben Hai River & Hien Luong Bridge (DMZ), Vietnam
4 more images

Ben Hai River has a total length of 100km, is the landmark in the partition of Vietnam into northern and southern zones. This demilitarized zone (DMZ) is about 5 km away of each side of the river. The Hien Luong Bridge with a bean on each side was built by the French 1950 before Vietnam war. During the war, the bridge was divided into two zone, the north zone of the beam bridge was colored red, and the south zone of the beam bridge was colored yellow.

Even though the bridge was in demilitarized zone, it was still damaged by American bombardment during the war. After the peace accords, a modern bridge was built next to the old bridge.

The surrounding the river are mostly fisherman villages.

Between January to July 1968, there were a bloodiest battle between the U.S Army and the North Vietnamese army. Khen Sanh was the U.S Army's base operation, and started to get attacked by the north Vietnamese army. During the 77 days battle, heavy arm force had been used like machine guns, fiery explosion, almost 1000kg bombs, and etc.

Today, the site has a small memorial museum, and remains few helicopters outside the museum.

The Dakrong Bridge & The Ho Chi Minh Trail
4 more images

The Ho Chi Minh Trail is a logistical system the ran from the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) to the republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) through the neighboring kingdom of Loas and Cambodia. This system supported the Vietcong in term of manpower, materials and etc during Vietnam War between 1955-1975.

The Dakrong Bridge was built to be part of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. It has been destroyed by the U.S Army on and off during the war. After reunification in 1975, it was rebuilt and now it is a grand suspension bridge which is not easy to knock down again.

On hwy 9, before we reached the Dakrong bridge, we visited an ethnic minority village, Bru-Van ethnic group. This Vietnamese minority group usually forms their village near the river or streams where is easy for their rice cultivation, fish, and etc. Their houses are arranged in circles around a communal house on flats. They usually practice ancestor worship. Their language is belong to Mon-Khmer culture.

During our visit, some Vietnamese visitors talked to them regard their lifestyles, and distributed foods and candies to kids. We did not expect to visit this village, so we were empty handed.

The Flag Tower, Hue

The Flag tower or the King's Knight is the historical landmark of Hue City also known as flag-staff. It is a huge structure of three flat top pyramids one laying on top of each other. In front of this tower, it is a open square facing the Ngo Mon Gate, and behind is the perfume river. It was a significant location to host national festival occasions during Dynasty.

Brief note of its history:

-In 1807, Built by Emperor Gia Long, and enhanced by son, Emperor Mih Mang later .
-In 1846, the wooded made flag-staff was made by Emperor Thieu Tri.
-In 1914, the wooded made flag-staff was replaced with cast-iron staff with the assistant of the French after it was destroyed by typhoon.

While I was there, there were many school kids visiting this place. You can easily find this flag tower when you visit the Imperial palace.
