This bicycles for passengers are a common way of transport in Hue. Though nowadays motorcycles are getting more and more popular, you can still see many cyclos around.
Being more slow and silent than motos, these vehicles are much better to have a touristic tour around the citadel.

Their fares are similar to those of the motos. Bargain in advance. U can hire them for a whole day, a tour, a few hours...

A dragon boat cruise down the Perfume River is the best way to see the imperial palaces, tombs and temples of Hue. It costs just 25,000 VND for an all-day cruise, starting at 8am and returning at 3pm.

A minibus will collect you from your hotel and take you to the landing stage. This is included in the price, as is a simple lunch and drink. Entrance fees are not included. Also, you will need to pay extra for a motorbike taxi to take you to any site that is not close to the river.

The route takes in Thien Mu Pagoda, Tu Duc Tomb, Hon Chen Temple, Khai Dinh Tomb and Minh Mang Tomb. The boat will drop you at the the Citadel at the end of the cruise, if you request it.

You can buy a ticket at any travel agency in Hue, including Sinh Cafe.

Hue has two long-distance bus stations: services from the south pull into An Cuu station, 3km southeast of the centre along Highway 1, while buses from Hanoi and the north dump you at An Hoa station, 4km northwest on Highway 1. Cyclos are on hand to take you into the centre.
Sinh Cafe open-tour buses set down and depart from either of their two offices at 2 Hung Vuong (tel 054 822121), and at 7 Nguyen Tri Phuong, next to the Thuan Hoa Hotel (tel 054 845022).
Onward bus tickets, tours, internet access and information are available here. Kim Travel open-tour buses operate from Queen Cafe 3, 8 Hung Vuong (tel 054 849327). Buses bound for Laos and Savannakhet via the Lao Bao border depart daily at 6 pm, arriving the following day at 2 pm. Tickets ($18) can be purchased at Sinh Cafe.

Travel by train in Vietnam may sound like a good idea. It's slightly more expensive than buses and of course cheaper than air.

One set back is the cafe helper cannot speak English. Order food on the train is almost near to impossible since they do not have a menu (not even a Vietnamese menu). Food menu in English, you just forget about it.

Bus trip from Hoi An to Hue

  • The bus picked us up from outside our hotel in Hoi An at lunchtime. The trip to Hue took around 3 hrs with a pit stop half way.

The scenery was great, following the coast most of the way. We went thru the Hai Van tunnel, so missed the view that we were hoping to see. Have heard that some of the slower tourist buses will stop at the top of the pass.

The bus trip was US$4 each. Can't remember the name of the bus company.

A word of warning on arrival in Hue - if you don't have a hotel booked, the touts will actually get on the bus before you have the chance to get out. So finding a room shouldn't be too much of a problem!!!

Hue is another short distance, slow pace travel city just like Hoi An. Unless you’re visiting all the distance tombs and pagodas, cyclo will be the recommended choice of transport.

These riders will wait and you just take you time visit the place. I cannot remember how much I paid to hire their service, but reasonable priced.

Hue has a very small airport that has maybe one, at most 2 runways. It shouldn't be surprising considering the small size of the city. It was a long way from town, and we couldn't see it from the road at all.

It seems to be a converted military airport, or maybe one that's dual-use. These old Russian Mi-8 helos are sitting on the runway. For a split second I had a misgiving that this was to be our ride. But luckily it was only an Airbus. Phew.

There were loads of cyclo drivers outside our hotel. We negotiated with two of them to take us for a 1 hour ride around Hue. We paid $3 each. Which was probably too much but heck who cares!
The two drivers were very entertaining with stories as we went along. At one point they had a play race with each other.
When we were out next day with our guide they saw us and were calling to us. Our guide says that they will not forget us and if we come back to Hue they will be our drivers for always.

The centre of old Hue, although spread on two sides of the river, is pretty compact and easy to navigate on foot, unless the heat is really too high.. in this case the best means of transportation are motortaxis (cheaper) or cyclos (more expensive). In both circumstances you'll have to negotiate the price beforehand. Car taxis are few and hard to find, so they are not always a valid transport option.

The boats taking travelers and tourists along the perfume river are called dragon boats, because they are all adorned with dragon designs. Boats come in all shapes, larger ones which can accommodate 10-15 people for cheaper tours, and smaller ones for private tours.

All these boats are owned by local families, who also live on the boat... and are docked by the riverside in the new part of Hue, where most hotels are. It doesn't matter which boat you take, there's no added luxury to any, since you'll be sitting on plastic chairs, no matter how much or little you have paid.

If you take a tour by a travel agent (we paid it 5 dollars) a light lunch is included... this is rice and vegetables. The lady of the boat, during the cruise, will come round with a menu... you can choose extra food and she'll hop off at some stage to go buy it... and prepare it for you at lunchtime.
