Many scams in Vietnam

by Ewingjr98

Everyone is trying to make a quick dong from Western tourists. These are the top scams that I either fell for or caught on to and stopped in the act:1. Taxi drivers will try to overcharge you or not tell you about the tolls. This was certainly the most common problem especially in Hanoi. 2. Drivers get kickbacks for bringing tourists to particular restaurants and hotels. When you start comparing rates with other tourists you may see a difference in price. To defeat this, have a taxi or Honda drive you take you to the area where you want to stay, then leave the hotel and shop around. 3. The old bait-and-switch tactic is alive and well in the shops. Just be careful and check your purchases! I bartered for some film for my camera, then when she put it in the bag, she swapped it out with cheaper film... I ended up paying more for some Vietnamese brand than I would have paid in the US....

Night train to Lao Cai

by JohanIsWeg

Travelling independently, we booked our own night train ticket from Hanoi to Lao Cai. While ensconced in our very basic 4-berth soft-sleeper, I was woken by two conductors who indicated in sign-language for me to follow them.We traversed a number of coaches before they escorted me into a very nice, cosy and unoccupied Livitrans coach. This could be mine, they offered, for a price. After a round of negotiations, my wife and I "moved" to the Livitrans coach, which also boasted a western-style toilet. While my wife, especially, appreciated the upgrade in transportation, it would have been much easier, and cheaper, to have booked Livitrans through our trustworthy hotel.

Subcontracted tours

by koppimasho

While SaigonTourist is a large, relatively reliable tour agency, beware of "non-private" tours. We, a group of four, once booked a tour to the Meekong Delta at the concierge of the Omni Hotel for about $20. The next day, we were surprised to see the tour guide an hour earlier than planned. He took us to a totally different agency where we waited almost an hour to join a tour group to the Meekong area. The problem is this: we paid $20, only to discover that the same trip booked through this new agency only costs $7! Why? It turns out that non-private tours are not handled by SaigonTourist, but rather handed down to lesser agencies for consolidation. The SaigonTourist representative we made the booking with was not to be found. So what did we get for an extra $13 after some protest with the smaller agency? Nothing much other than a few shoulder shrugs and "better" food that was late in...

the taylors of Hoi An

by call_me_rhia

Taylor-made clothes are the biggest tourist trap in Hoi An... one hard to avoid, as they really look great... especially the flower embroideries themy create on silk. However we were told by manny, including a local insider, that the quality is very poor... true, clothes are cheap in Hoi An, but apparently they are not worth the money paid. Even our local insider, who lives in Hoi An and knows plenty of people, did not succeed in having a pair of trousers made by a friend.. and still they did not last a year... Admire the clothes in the windows... and then say, no thanks. And look for a magnificent clothes shop with some golden furniture... it was once a theatre (see photo) If you find some silk that you like, buy it... if you are northbound, have your clothes made in Hue... the quality is much superior... the beauty the same (and sometimes even better)

Delta Adventure Tours - avoid!!

by travellerdebbie

I would like to warn other travellers about Delta Adventure Tours so this company cannot continue to deceive unwary tourists. Myself and 2 friends booked the"Mostly by Boat - Express Way to Cambodia" trip from Saigon to Phnom Penh. We paid $40USD for the speed boat option. In there advertising flyer this option was 2hr 45minutes by boat from Chau Doc arriving in Phnom Penh at 1pm. Our boat took 6hours and arrived at 4pm. We spoke to a tour guide from another company on the boat and he said there was not another boat and this was the time it always took to get to Phnom Penh. We could have paid about half the price and arrived at the same time!!The flyer also says that we would visit a local orchard and village – this didn’t happen either. We were also told we would stop in Vinh Long City – yes 5 minutes for a restroom break. The bus was overcrowded from Vinh Long City – the guide had to buy...

Ho Chi Minh City

by disaster53

If you are in the city and you feel lonely do not go to the lake late at night and follow anyone that promise you a good time. They are there to rip you off or worst. They will take you to a karaoke bar where they promise you there are nice girls waiting. But you will only see ugly girls and an enormous bill for a karaoke that you have not done. If you do not pay......

War Theme Park

by iwys

As part of the "War Theme Park" at Cu Chi, you can buy imitation Vietcong uniforms and fire live ammunition from AK-47s and assorted other weaponry, including automatics, at $1 per round. Some tourists quickly run up bills in excess of $100, turning their $4 trip to Cu Chi into a very expensive day out. If you really feel the need to fire a gun, don't use an automatic weapon and ask for mufflers to protect your ears. What will they think of next? B-52 rollercoaster rides?

Eating in a restaurant

by christinenigam

We ate at Bibi, a french restaurant. I ordered set menu which came with first, second course, dessert and a coffee for 320,000 dong or US$20. When the bill came, the US$20 appeared but I also saw an item for a dessert for 100,000 dong. I asked the waiter what was this dessert item. He said sorry. One night we were at La Fourchette, a french restaurant near the Grand hotel. The waitress had given our bill to the last guests who had just paid their bills. These guests had not only paid theirs but also ours. She went out of the door but was happy that they are gone. YOu know what, if it was the other way round, meaning they had not paid, she would have gone round looking for them. CHeck your bill before signing. Study your bill and see that they only record what you have ordered.

Making clothes

by christinenigam

I went to Tome a shop next to the Caravelle hotel where I stayed. I ordered some clothes and insisted that I would only put half the deposit. Next day I came back to try, I was very happy with what they made. However, one of the outfits they could not make for me. I ordered two more tops and did not put a deposit this time because they had cancelled one outfit.I came back the third time and ordered three more outfits. This time I put US$100 deposit down. They wanted me to pay in full. I refused. When I went to collect all the items, paid for all of them, they claimed that one of the outfits I had ordered was theirs.I snatched the money from the shop assistant's hand and walked out of the shop. They came to look for me and apologised for their mistake. The tip is (1) do not ever ever pay in full for making clothes. Always try to put as little as is acceptable to the vendor, try less than...

My Tho day tour from Ho Chi Minh

by hydronetta

For those on a tight schedule many agencies offer one day (to more days) tour to Mekong Delta. If you opt for the 1 day tour you'll be transfered to the river town of My Tho to visit the islands. I found the experience a complete set tourist trap as everything was set up for tourists. You're taken to listen to music, taste fruits, have a short ride with a boat inside the small canals. The scenery is uninteresting despite the lush vegetation. Both me and my travelmate found it a complete loss of time, given the fact that it takes at least 2.5 hours to reach the area from Ho Cchi Minh city.
