Airport cabs in Hanoi

by xaver

Once in the Hanoi airport, do not waste your time telling to the taxi driver in wich hote you want to go, anyway he will take you only to the hotel or hotels he chooses!I read about this fat in Sir Richard pages before leaving, so I said where I wanted to go, but did not get upset when he brought me somewhere else. The hotel was fine and probably it was one of the best hotel experiences I have had so far. If you really want to go in a specific hotel, contact them before leaving and they will make sure that someone is waiting for you in the airport, I did this way, when I came back to Hanoi as I really loved my cab driver choice!

Single room on the boat

by xaver

When the boat staff in Halong bay showed us the room where we supposed to sleep in and, we said: we are 5 people, there are 2 rooms and six beds, the guy simply said: yes one room forthe guy(me) who booked a single room and the rest of the other one for the rest of you, then if someone wants to sleep outside, me or another collegue will take the bed. That was like: please go outside so some more of us will have a bed LOLThat was the option we all chosed, I know I had a single room as I asked for that, but I preferred to sleep under the stars with the a/c made by the night breeze. Try to be very clear with the agency about what kind of service you expect, then check what they are going to give you before leaving the harbour for the night, so if you do not want to sleep on the boat(wich is a great experience) you can go to the hotel.

Lonely Planet

by xaver

I see more and more tourists going around with their Lonely Planet and this, in a certain way makes me happy as, they are supposed on travelling on their own and not being part of a pakage tour, or even worse of an all inclusive tour. The problem is that all these tourists reading Lonely Planet like it was bible, end up doing all together the same thing without discovering a place with their own eyes.I usually travel with LP too as it is helpful for itineraries and many other stuffs, but for example I often prefer to discover restaurants and dishes on my own.In Hue I followed LP advice for a restaurant and a particular receipe, i went there for breakfast, had that potato salad and it was really excellent.Went back for dinner as I really enjoyed the place, and it was full of lonelyplaneters, sitting with their guide and ordering the same potato salad, i tried to get that salad again and...

Rowboat Scam

by windsorgirl

To visit the Perfume Pagoda one must travel to My Duc and then take a leisurely row boat ride thru picturesque scenery. The cost of the boat is usually quite reasonable and is rowed by two locals, usually women. Be forewarned that once you are returned to My Duc after visiting the Pagoda, they will expect, no...DEMAND more money in the form of a tip, and this means each rower separately. I suggest you budget for this when you are negotiating the cost of your boat ride from the very beginning. We tipped $1us each person for each rower. There is no other way to get to the Perfume Pagoda.

Ho Chi Minh City Airport Taxi (July 2003)

by peterANDsharon

When arriving at the Ho Chi Minh city airport, be firm on your intended hotel you wish to be taken to, and argue a price before getting in the taxi. Ask for a metered taxi, and make sure the meter actually works! We asked to be taken to Miss Loi's guesthouse, which is about 5 to 10 minutes walk from Pham Ngu Lao and De Tham street areas, and was promptly told by taxi drivers that the government had closed down that street and all the buildings as well. I mentioned that I had rang the guesthouse only days ago, but they obviously weren't interested in hearing or understanding what I was trying to tell them! I then explained to them in mumbling/broken Vietnamese that I had rang the guesthouse, and was then told that I must be wrong, and that the whole street was undergoing major construction work! They finally suggested that they would take us to another cheap hotel nearby, and then if we...

Mekong Delta

by bartman_9

The Tropic Tours one-day Mekong Delta trip whisks you from one touist café to the next, stops at candyshops and souvenirmarkets, but you only get a tiny glimps of life on the Mekong, which is what you really want to see on a Mekong trip.

Dalat

by bartman_9

From the artificial lake in the center of town where you can paddle around in swan-boats to the locals dressed up as cowboys for pictures, everything about it feels fake and touristy. Every natural attraction has been turned into a mini-Disneyland with rides, playgrounds and shops. This is my least favourite place in Vietnam. Stay at the 'Crazy House', Vietnam's most original hotel! If you want to see the central highlands, Kom Tum is a better, as yet unspoiled, alternative.

Watch out for taxi drivers

by jobaby

Dont be fooled by the occasional cyclo's who ask if you want to go on a tour to maybe the Mekong River and they say that they will "jack it up for cheap"......they introduce you to a taxi driver but request money for doing this, then to the taxi driver who requests a substantial amount of money (usually US $'s). You are now under the impression that this pays for all of your tour fees and entries, they take you there then hand you on to someone else and the chain reaction goes on and on. It is safer to have a tour organised by your hotel or your travel agent when you make your bookings. "Like life, learn by experience" Book tours through your travel agent prior to departure.

Just hawkers

by minhphat01

Yes, those pesky hawkers can be a real pest. However, if you know how to avoid them....and only need to discourage them at one spot....they'll know you and leave you alone for the rest of that stretch of land that is within your eye sight. These street hawkers work in herds...very efficient herds in deed. If some of them swarm around you and got a deal....all of them know that. And they don't need the highest technological advances to sense so. Here's how the swarm of hawkers work:-Spot a nice and beefy tourist...I mean beefy in terms of monetary potential...like how flashy or rich you may look....etc.-Run straight up to the tourist shoving whatever stuffs they are holding in their hand right in-your-face selling gesture...-IF the tourist happens to EVEN look at ANY item that the hawker is holding for ANY second. Flash that item right out infront of the tourist's nose...I mean right at...
