I had read about Mama Linh’s Boat tours in Nha Trang and it sounded like a lot of fun but on arriving in the beach town, I noticed that numerous operators had jumped on the bandwagon and were doing what was described as the same exact tour, and generally for less money. So, we opted for one run by T.M. Brothers Café on D Tran Hung Dao. It is similar to big boy Sinh Café but we found their buses were newer so we started using them instead. They offered breakfast before the boat trip so we opted to give it a try. We were surprised to find it was a full and very good breakfast rather than the expected bread and jam. The boat trip was great too, with a full seafood buffet lunch and time to do some snorkeling as well. The best part was the makeshift bar they had out on the water, where we could drink as much homemade fruit wine as we could stomach. Our little group bonded immediately and it was a shame it wasn’t an overnight trip, as we all would have stayed on! The whole thing was only $5 each for breakfast, bus to boat, boat trip with snorkeling equipment, seafood buffet and free wine. The best things in life might not be free, but they can be cheap. ;)

Though one can travel very easily on the backpacker bus that runs down the whole coast of Vietnam for as little as $27, it is nice to change it up a bit with a train trip. It is a bit more expensive but for the train afficionado, it is a must. Or maybe you're just tired of the bus.
The Reunification Express is by no means a luxury trip but it's fun and more comfortable than a night bus by a long shot. We took an overnight train from Hanoi to Hue that left at 11 PM. We got a soft sleeper for some luxury. From what the ticket says, it cost 331,000 dong ($21) but our hotel charged us $29. We felt stupid until our sleeper mates for the night told us they paid $58 each! Buyer beware (hint: buy your own tickets at the train station).
We were surprised that breakfast was included and that came with a beer to boot! After a night on the Reunification Express, we needed it...lol.

I entered Vietnam overland by bus coming from Cambodia. I like overland borders, as they have some personality and give you a certain feeling of what you will find. Those in the airports are the same everywhere, so uniform...

The gate in Vietnam (see pic) indicated a socialist architecture gate, with rather "modern" angles and lines, quite the opposite to the Cambodian gate, so elaborated and adorned in old khmer style.

Most travellers buy an open bus ticket from either Sinh Cafe or Kim Cafe. They are great value, and the best way to see Vietnam on a budget.

The Kim Cafe buses cover the following itineraries every day:

    Ho Chi Minh City-Mui Ne-Nha Trang-Hoi An-Hue-Hanoi for US$17

    Ho Chi Minh City-Dalat-Nha Trang-Hoi An-Hue-Hanoi for US$18

They use 30 to 45-seat airconditioned buses and make stops at places of interest along the way, including beaches. So, have your swimming costume and towel handy.

You can stop in any of the cities on the route for as long as you like. The only restriction is that the open tour ticket is not available during Tet.

One disadvantage is that all of the buses seem to stop at the same places for refreshment breaks at the same time, so you may end up returning to the bus frustrated because you couldn't get served in the overcrowded restaurants. My advice, if you are hungry, is to race off the bus and place your order for food before joining the queue for the toilet.

If you take the bus from Phnom Penh to enter Vietnam by the south towards Saigon, you will have to cross the Mekong river by ferry. U go down of the bus, the bus goes into the ferry and you stay on deck till it crosses the river, 10 minutes later. It is nice to observe the people who cross the river everyday... there are very few bridges over the Mekong, most of the crossings are done by ferry.

Easy rider service is one possible mode of transportations for you to tour around Dalat (and many other towns too) & your schedule and payment is negotiable with your rider.

Unlike some big group tour bus, you'll have limited visiting time per location & long waiting time for some not so discipline tour members.

Planes are rather cheap in Vietnam. At the beginning I was planning to see the whole country by bus/train. I entered Vietnam from the south. From Saigon I took the bus to Hoi An directly. It was a hard experience, 22 hours of bus in a minibus with hard seats, bumpy roads under reparation...

So for the next big movement I decided to take the plane (Hue-Hanoi) which was fast, cheap (60 USD) and convenient. Vietnam airlines planes were not 1st class, but enough for short flights...

Small scooters (under 100cc) can be rented in most major city for about 5 US dollars a day. They're fun to ride around the city if you are comfortable with the crazy traffic. I wouldnt really recommend it for somebody who's never ridden a motorcycle. For the experienced rider, in any sort of traffic make your movement as deliberate as possible so others rider can predict what you're going to do next.

Also under no condition should you leave your passport or any other important documents as a deposit to the people renting you the scooters (Either they take the risk or not).

You do need a license to operate the scooters but the police seldom bother foreigners. VN also does not recognize the international license so dont bother.

  • cyclos - Vietnam
    cyclos
    by TomorrowsAngel
The cyclo was invented by the Fench. They offer cheap, easy and environmentally-friendly transport around Vietnam's sprawling cities.
Groups of cyclo drivers hang out near major hotels and tourist attractions, and many speak broken english.
If you use one, make sure the driver understands where to go, by using a map to overcome any language misinterpretations.
All drivers are male and vary in age from 15 to about 65.
According to our guide, many young drivers are from the country and have come to city to make some money. Often they sleep in the cyclos and have no place to live.
In 1995, the government passed legislation requiring all cyclo drivers to obtain a license, after first passing an exam on traffic-safety.
Bargaining for a suitable price before going anywhere is necessary, and try and flag one down off the street, as opposed to getting one from outside your hotel, is another cost-saving measure.

Buses go virtually anywhere and as long as you are along the road that leads to your destination you can stop one. The Destination sign is behind the wind screen.
In small towns you'll have to ask where the bus stop is, you usually find them easily .
    pieces of advice.
1/ Avoid taking the bus between towns as you may well find terribly crowded vehicles !!!
2/ Take an early coach if you want a seat, plus the road are often in such an appalling state that the trip can be quite long!!!
