 | Vietnam Transportation | Tips 121 - 130 of 213 | | If you are pressed with time (as we were) and less pressed with money (as we were) It's a good idea to make the long legs of the tour by plane. We flew from Hanoi to Hue, and from Dannag to HoChiMinh City. It's not very expensive with Vietnam air and leaves you more time to see the places you realy wanna see. We also flew from Bangkok to Hanoi and from H.C.M.C to Bangkok with Vietnam air Take into acoount, delays, which will most certainly occure; It happened in 2 out of our 4 flights Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

I toke a tour with boat and bus to visit Halong bay. The tour was not bad apart the boat room(read tourist trap). The agency I used for this trip was Vietnam Opentour. The cost of the tour was about 35 dollars and the funny thing is that you pay 5 dollars more to sleep on the boat a great value if you consider the experience a rip off if you find a rainy day and you have to sleep in the room! I flew with Thai from Rome to Banfkok and then from Bangkok to Rome and then to Hanoi. Once there, as I had just two weeks and I wanted to cover a quite big itinerary, I flew a lot with both Vietname airlines and Laos ones, both very good companies as far as I could see(I slept almost all the time during flyghts). Internal flyghts in Vietnam cost around 60 dollars(one way) and the international one from Hanoi to Luan Prabang was about 150 dollars. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Planes are rather cheap in Vietnam. At the beginning I was planning to see the whole country by bus/train. I entered Vietnam from the south. From Saigon I took the bus to Hoi An directly. It was a hard experience, 22 hours of bus in a minibus with hard seats, bumpy roads under reparation... So for the next big movement I decided to take the plane (Hue-Hanoi) which was fast, cheap (60 USD) and convenient. Vietnam airlines planes were not 1st class, but enough for short flights... In travelling around Vietnam, I started by train, with a first class overnight sleeper from Hanoi to Hue. This is not a bad way to travel, provided you don't have any phobias about cockroatches. But for sheer convenience, I recommend plane--it's cheap, convenient and fast. Of course the true backpacker will insist on bus, but after taking an all day kidney-buster from Nha Trang to HCMC, I definately recommend flying (or, as a backup, train). If you take the bus from Phnom Penh to enter Vietnam by the south towards Saigon, you will have to cross the Mekong river by ferry. U go down of the bus, the bus goes into the ferry and you stay on deck till it crosses the river, 10 minutes later. It is nice to observe the people who cross the river everyday... there are very few bridges over the Mekong, most of the crossings are done by ferry. Leave a Comment Theme: Ship/Boat

I entered Vietnam overland by bus coming from Cambodia. I like overland borders, as they have some personality and give you a certain feeling of what you will find. Those in the airports are the same everywhere, so uniform... The gate in Vietnam (see pic) indicated a socialist architecture gate, with rather "modern" angles and lines, quite the opposite to the Cambodian gate, so elaborated and adorned in old khmer style. I had several opportunities to rent a bicycle while in Vietnam. It was especially useful in Hue and Hoi An. You really feel like a local weaving in and out of traffic. But be sure you know exactly where you parked your bike because they all look the same! Leave a Comment Theme: Bicycle

Cyclos are a popular mode of transportation for tourists. The driver sits behind you on a bicycle seat and will navigate you thru busy traffic to your hotel, the train station or a tourist site. I recommend giving it a go, it's a unique experience. Leave a Comment Theme: Bicycle

Travel by train from north down to south is the mainly tool, which is old-fashioned on narrow tracks. Mostly trains are made in Indian. Leave a Comment
