  • The cyclo men in hoi an and hue were great. Most spoke some English and we agreed reasonable prices with them of $1 for one hour.
The cyclo men in Hanoi and Saigon were a totally different breed.

  • We took several internal flights. Flying is a quick and comfortable way to get around the country. Most suitable for those who have the money but not the time to take trains and buses.

This is what the family car in Vietnam looks like. There are only 3 on this motorcycle, but we've seen up to 5!!! Mouth-nose is covered cause the polution on the streets makes it a must. The motorcycle trafic is unbelivable, impossible to join if you are not a local

cycling vietnam is a great alternative to the sinh vafe bus that most people end up using.
highway number one is not very good for cycling.
go down to the mekong delta ot the DMZ.
there you will find world class cycling.

Pay the hotel to pick you up and drop you off at the airport. It will save a lot of hassel.

Do not take any non-metered taxis or vechicles in HCMC. They cost way too much. The drop rate on a taxi is 12,000 Dong (less than $1 USD)..you can get almost anywhere in the city for under 30,000 Dong.

    Soft Berth in the Train

Like mentioned, Vietnam geographically is like a long stick. So, traveling from North to Central or to South and vice versa requires you to spend 15-30 hours on the train. So, I chose to go with the sleeper. It's reasonably clean and quiet. A compartment has four beds. A bit more expensive than other means, but it will prevent your butt from hurting on having to sit for long hours. They serve you some meals on day ride.

Riding the train from north to south and vice versa is recommended. The train is, although slow, quite efficient and punctual. It's a better alternative than bus (of course more expensive). Some tourists told me about the awful bus ride, which is very bumpy due to its poorly-contructed road. It is very horrible, considering you have to be in there 12-15 hours. The train's soft berth is great. Also, along the way, you see some nice scenary, e.g. sunrise/sunset, neverending rice field.

There are many tour companies that will arrange your trip to Halong Bay. Kangaroo Cafe may be slightly more expensive than some you may come across but I found them value for money. The tour group is smaller than most other companies so you are assured of a bunk when spending a night on the boat.

  • The cost for a airconditioned, minivan Taxi, for three people from the train station to Hoi An was $ 9US.

We had to take in a short visit to the marble mountain workshops but it was ok.

When in Vietnam everyone should take at least one trip on a cyclo. This guy's name is Day and he is a true gent. He took me around the sights of Saigon for an afternoon and we stopped for a beer and a bite to eat along the way. He was great company so if you see him around Pham Ngu Lao St. then give him some business. You wont regret it.
