Sinh Cafe Bus

by Aliceinhn

Sinh Cafe is the most wellknown and realiable travel agency in Vietnam now aday. It is also recommended in Guide Books like Lonely Planet and Reisen Know How . They have interesting daily tours, tailored tours and opened tours to almost every famous spots of Vietnam. Travel by Sinh Cafe bus is very realiable and fairly comfortable. Anyway please be noticed that from HoChiMinh City down to Mekong Delta's provinces, SinhCafe is stronger in opened tours than in organized bus. For examle, there is no bus of Sinh Cafe from HCMC to Cantho, Camau, Kiengiang.

Rock it with the old school scooters

by Kudos

Small scooters (under 100cc) can be rented in most major city for about 5 US dollars a day. They're fun to ride around the city if you are comfortable with the crazy traffic. I wouldnt really recommend it for somebody who's never ridden a motorcycle. For the experienced rider, in any sort of traffic make your movement as deliberate as possible so others rider can predict what you're going to do next. Also under no condition should you leave your passport or any other important documents as a deposit to the people renting you the scooters (Either they take the risk or not). You do need a license to operate the scooters but the police seldom bother foreigners. VN also does not recognize the international license so dont bother.

Getting around the country

by mnhaus

Vietnam has an infrastructure which is still developing. I used hired cars to get around which is expensive but relatively fast over shorter distances. The downsides are having to breathe all the exhaust on the roads (yuk!!!), the heat (if your driver doesn't want to use the AC, and the routine excitement of staring down your death with a large truck coming at you full speed. The alternatives are the usual suspects (train, plane, bus) and it depends on how far you have to go and whether or not you want to see stuff along the way. Bus is very cheap, and can take you just about anywhere from HCMC up to Hanoi and down to the Delta, but the trips can be long, hot, and crowded. Train is slower than bus and is more expensive with less stops. Flying is pretty reasonable, and obviously the fastest over long distances.

Vietnam Rail is good value

by goldcoaster

We travelled using the train from HCMC up to Da Nang in a couple of legs and it was really cool. It was a great way to meet some of the local characters and was extremely comfortable. The prices are resonable, about $26 USD was the most we paid for a leg and the sleepers are nice. The toilet leaves a bit to desire on some of the trains, holes in the floor, but others are modern western style flushing pedestals.Be aware that there is no through booking so you can only a buy a leg at a time. If you are not planning on staying long then it is an idea to buy your next tickets when you arrive.

Trains are great

by JohnCowie

The Train service is good (although slow). For over night trips the four sleeper non air conditioned units are the best value, relatively clean(well some are) and cheap.Buy the tickets at the Train Station rather than via the Hotel or agent and avoid being convinced by one of the Guards to buy the ticket on the train (at a discount price). Did this once and yeah I might have saved some money but it was abit risky getting off (where they are supposed to check your ticket) . Check out prices on the web site (Vietnam Railways) and print a copy, makes things alot easier when you've got everything (prices and schedule) in front of you

Taxi and motorcycles

by peterANDsharon

ALWAYS argue & settle on a price BEFORE getting in the taxi or on the motorcycle. If possible, take a taxi that has a meter that actually works ! Remember that the taxi meter displays in thousands of Vietnamese dongs, and NOT in US $$$$ !!!!!!!!! The other thing that is displayed on the meter is kilometres km.

Vietnam airline: Danang to Saigon

by wonderif

booked the tickets not with a travel agent, but directly at Vietnam Airline office for 800,000dong but 25,000dong tax.Nothing, good or bad stood out. quality, service, comfort the same as any other domestic airlines. A good option to bypass places I've already been to (ie. nha trang, dalat, mui ne). Otherwise the cheaper option of taking the overnight train is fine to take in some views.

Sinh cafe's coach from Hue to Hoi An

by wonderif

costs US$7.1st option, bus leaves at 1pm and goes directly to hoian in 4 hours.2nd option i took was the 7:30am bus that takes 6 hours and stops at 3 stops. the first stop was a toilet break at a beach resort type place that wasn't at all nice. The second stop was in the middle of the Hai Van Pass. The views were soOo beautiful through the Hai Van Pass. The road winds sharply and dangerously round and round the hills with gorgeous views of the ocean. Last stop was 30minutes at Marble Mountain. So far the journey was good but here, the guide just dumped us at a dusty lung-torturing marble/sculpturing village to be hassled by traders. No directions were given to any places that were worth visiting here.Arrived at hoi and was offered more hotels instead of taking us directly to whereever we were suppose to be.In a nutshell: the buses were new, clean, leather and very comfortable. Beautiful...

Overnight train: Hanoi to Hue

by wonderif

caught the train from Hanoi to Hue.I booked the day before and was unable to get tickets for the 11:30pm E1 soft sleeper and ended up with the hard sleepers instead. It is indeed hard! 6 bodies in one tiny compartment was very cramped and "in ur face". But at least you've got a bed and the 12 hour journey didn't feel long at all. At 7am i awoke to beautiful hills behind sparkling green rice fields as the train nears Hue.WARNING: do not book ur tickets at travel agencies!! i asked one and they asked for 600,000dong. Then, after a lovely 20min cyclo ride to the Hanoi Train station, the price was only about 380,000dong!!!all in all, the overnight train is a good option... book ur tickets directly at the train station and try to book a few days before to gaurantee a soft sleep.

Bus from Hue to Hoi An

by mypriority

The Hue - Hoi An path is really popular for tourists. Not many people go to Danang. And we are all right! Hoi An is such a fine city. Most of us go from Hue to Hoi An by bus. However, it took 4-5 hours just for this 100km trip! The road is in bad shape and go up and down cross mountains. The visibility is very low too as we virtually drive in to clouds (see picture). The pain adds when it rains. A few backpackers from Britain I met actually took a bike ride. And it took them full 2 days!!! They swear they never do it again.
