Walking

by TomorrowsAngel

Cross the streets very slowly and deliberately, this gives drivers time to judge their position so they can pass on either side of you. They usually won't stop or even slow down, but will avoid trying to hit you.If you run across the street, as we saw some tourists doing, people get mad and have to slam on their brakes.Even better, walk beside a local whilst walking across and follow their moves!

Xich lo

by TomorrowsAngel

The cyclo was invented by the Fench. They offer cheap, easy and environmentally-friendly transport around Vietnam's sprawling cities.Groups of cyclo drivers hang out near major hotels and tourist attractions, and many speak broken english. If you use one, make sure the driver understands where to go, by using a map to overcome any language misinterpretations. All drivers are male and vary in age from 15 to about 65.According to our guide, many young drivers are from the country and have come to city to make some money. Often they sleep in the cyclos and have no place to live.In 1995, the government passed legislation requiring all cyclo drivers to obtain a license, after first passing an exam on traffic-safety.Bargaining for a suitable price before going anywhere is necessary, and try and flag one down off the street, as opposed to getting one from outside your hotel, is another...

From Hanoi

by skydivefred

Of course, I cycled most of the time around Vietnam but From hanoi I would always take the bus to a provincial town from which I would start cycling. Getting out of hanoi is quite a hectic experience and as an area to pass through, not a so interesting one. From Hanoi, you have different stations. In the town center "Kim Ma" station. YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO PUT YOUR BIKE ON THOSE BUSES!!!11 kms from the town center on the road towards Hoa Binh, another station from which you can go to any destination. Your bike will be on the roof or in the bus. you'll have to pay extra. important:If you don't see your destination and you are invited to go into another bus, Check whether its destination is at least further than yours on the same road (which will be OK) if not, in spite of their insisting, wait until you see a coach with the right sign, there will always be one.

Great Unexpectations !!!!

by skydivefred

Buses go virtually anywhere and as long as you are along the road that leads to your destination you can stop one. The Destination sign is behind the wind screen. In small towns you'll have to ask where the bus stop is, you usually find them easily . pieces of advice. 1/ Avoid taking the bus between towns as you may well find terribly crowded vehicles !!!2/ Take an early coach if you want a seat, plus the road are often in such an appalling state that the trip can be quite long!!!

Flying into Vietnam and airport taxi scams

by tampa_shawn

It is now possible to get direct flights between the US and Vietnam (as of December 2003). Tickets that take you into Hanoi (in the North) and out of Ho Chi Minh City (in the South) are often available at no extra charge. We used a discount broker and were able to get our ticket for $936, our travel agent was Economy Travel Inc at 1/888-848-4359Taxis are readily available at both the Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi airports to take you to your hotel. Taxi drivers at airports will try to get Westerns for 3 to 4 times the going rate so make a note of the current rate. As of Nov 2003 a taxi ride from the airport to the hotel for two people should cost no more than $5. Be sure to ask the rate for the number of people in your party (or you will find out when you arrive that they want that rate per person) Taxi drivers will often take you to the hotel they want you to use (a family members or one they...

One and Two Day Tour Packages

by tampa_shawn

Since I am an independent traveler I normally avoid prepackaged tours like the plague but (goodness I never thought I would be saying this) in Vietnam this really is often the only way to go in SOME remote areas.I am saying this because to some areas of Vietnam there really is no infrastructure for the independent traveler and finding information to get to these locations is next to impossible. If you do manage to make it too the location by yourself you will end up paying 4 to 5 times the cost of the tour.I recommend taking prearranged packages to the following locations1) Halong Bay from Hanoi 2) Mekong Delta from Saigon The tours are very well put together and you can choose if you want a one, two, three or more day tour. For the most part they’re really a shuttle service that sets everything up for you and makes everything so easy. The guides we had spoke excellent English and were a...

Cyclos

by SirRichard

This public bycicle transport is very typical of Vietnam. Not as fast as the motos, is a more relaxed way to see the city, and much more comfortable! Prices use to be similar. And if you doubt, thinking "poor old man, suffering back there, cycling", consider U R permitting him a good way to earn a salary he couldn't dream of in the countryside, from where most of them come...

Private motorbikes

by SirRichard

Motorbikes are everywhere in Vietnam, much more than cars.Don't be surprised if private motorbikes stop you by the street offering you a ride to anywhere you go. If you are interested, just bargain the price BEFORE and then go! Prices use to be around 1 USD for city drives. You can also hire a driver for the whole day, he will take you to your places of interest and wait at the door of the museums and so.He can also make you a custom day plan, taking U to the main touristic highlights, in case you don't know exactly where to go...

Boat tours in Halong Bay

by SirRichard

If you wanna visit the famous Halong Bay, in the north of the country, there are many organised tours from Hanoi. I took a 2 days tour. They include bus Hanoi-Haiphong, lunch there, wooden traditional boat for the afternoon, dinner on board, night on board (optional, night in a hotel in Cat Ba Island, which is cheaper than sleeping on the boat, but not so nice), sailing the following morning, lunch on board, return to Haiphong in the afternoon and bus back to Hanoi. This goes in groups of 10-12 people, with a local guide. There are many agencies offering this. I did it with ODC, who turned out to be a good choice...Doing it by yourself might be more difficult and won't be any cheaper. My tour was 26 USD (2 days, 3 meals, night on board).

Hop On - Hop Off buses

by SirRichard

In the main cities of Vietnam you will find many travel agencies that run their own private minibuses to go around the country. The main route is Saigon - Natrang - HoiAn - Hue - Hanoi, all the way from South to North (and viceversa). There are daily buses, you can go down in any stop, stay there as long as you want and continue with the following bus.Price for Saigon - Hanoi is about 20 USD.Some of the agencies: Camel Tours, Happy Tours, Kangaroo Travels, Sihn Cafe...
