Rent your own motorbike

by mango13

My favourite way of travel. Decide which region you want to explore, travel to your starting point, rent a motorbike there & just cruise around.Attention: the roads in VN are lousy. Even Highway Nr. 1 has a lot of awful stretches, including holes & long stretches with sand and stones. If you don't mind getting dusty, shaky & sweaty however, this is heaven!

Tourist organisation

by mango13

Many touristic organisations are more than willing to drive you from one city to the next. the buses are aircon'd and usually of decent quality. The prices are low. I travelled with Sinh Cafe, and didn't regret so. The main trips are Saigon - Nha Trang (or SG - Dalat & Dalat - NT), Nha Trang - Hoi An, Hoi An - Hué & Hué - Hanoi. It is possible to get on & off the bus for a couple of days in different locations too (e.g. if you wanna go see Phan Thiet beach, you can get off the Saigon - Nha Trang bus there) ... check when booking your trip. These same organisations also organize trips within cities. A few examples:Saigon: Mekong Delta, Cu Chi TunnelsHué: DMZ, Perfume RiverHanoi: Halong Bay, Perfume PagodaThe hotels they bring you to are always cheap, and of fair quality. You're not obliged to stay in the hotel you're brought to, but it's usually a good option. Most negative point: the...

These rides are exhilarating to say the least...

by jobaby

If you want excitement, Cyclos are the way to go...it is rather thrilling travelling on these bicycles and you cant help but feel sorry for the poor guy that is doing the pedalling. The way that they manouver inbetween vehicles and other bikes is an experience in itself.

Take bus like locals do

by minhphat01

I usually travel between Saigon and Vung Tau when I stayed in Vietnam. I used to have someone drove me on a moped for those trips.....and that ain't good generally. The only good thing is that going on moped seems to be the quickest way to get between adjacent cities....why? Them over-used buses keep picking up and dropping off people every few minutes! The bad thing in riding a moped for such long travel is that you'll get to face the dirty air first hand...and lots of body aches after that. :) So, I and my family just hit the bus anyway. The ride from Vung Tau to Saigon is usually about 3hours or more for bus.....and with moped, you could cut half the time easily.

Bicycles

by ExoticGal

Nowadays, when more & more ppl in Vietnam ride motorcycles, bicycle has become a luxurious means for city-slickers. Believe it or not I haven't touched bicycle for almost 5 years.but if you're visiting my country, I would recommend it. You may rent it for less than USD8 /day and ride to your heart's content around town.

transportation options

by eelaine

this is one of the easiest and most comfy cheap way to travel around vietnam.. however be really careful when buying tickets through a travel agent as they may cheat you.. normally they'll charge you for an aircon soft sleeping bunk.. and when you get there it's actually a non-aircon hard bunk.. also, there used to be a price difference for foreigners and locals but lately that has changed, though many travel agents will tell you otherwise.. the best way is to go to the train station and get the tickets yourself..

Family Car

by galy

This is what the family car in Vietnam looks like. There are only 3 on this motorcycle, but we've seen up to 5!!! Mouth-nose is covered cause the polution on the streets makes it a must. The motorcycle trafic is unbelivable, impossible to join if you are not a local

Travel by taxi

by johsab

Pay the hotel to pick you up and drop you off at the airport. It will save a lot of hassel.Do not take any non-metered taxis or vechicles in HCMC. They cost way too much. The drop rate on a taxi is 12,000 Dong (less than $1 USD)..you can get almost anywhere in the city for under 30,000 Dong.

Soft Berth in the Train

by mypriority

Like mentioned, Vietnam geographically is like a long stick. So, traveling from North to Central or to South and vice versa requires you to spend 15-30 hours on the train. So, I chose to go with the sleeper. It's reasonably clean and quiet. A compartment has four beds. A bit more expensive than other means, but it will prevent your butt from hurting on having to sit for long hours. They serve you some meals on day ride.

Reunionification Train Ride

by mypriority

Riding the train from north to south and vice versa is recommended. The train is, although slow, quite efficient and punctual. It's a better alternative than bus (of course more expensive). Some tourists told me about the awful bus ride, which is very bumpy due to its poorly-contructed road. It is very horrible, considering you have to be in there 12-15 hours. The train's soft berth is great. Also, along the way, you see some nice scenary, e.g. sunrise/sunset, neverending rice field.
