Halong Bay with Kangaroo Cafe

by PA68

There are many tour companies that will arrange your trip to Halong Bay. Kangaroo Cafe may be slightly more expensive than some you may come across but I found them value for money. The tour group is smaller than most other companies so you are assured of a bunk when spending a night on the boat.

Travel in style in Saigon

by PA68

When in Vietnam everyone should take at least one trip on a cyclo. This guy's name is Day and he is a true gent. He took me around the sights of Saigon for an afternoon and we stopped for a beer and a bite to eat along the way. He was great company so if you see him around Pham Ngu Lao St. then give him some business. You wont regret it.

Fly to and from Phu Quoc Island

by ScottForster

The boat trip to or from Phu Quoc island can be a tortourous trip. The seats are definitely too small for a westerner. If you go by boat buy a green hammock that are sold by the wharf, it will ensure a far more pleasant journey.Buy some water for the trip ( 6hrs) but don't plan on using a toilet.

Soft Sleepers are our saviour

by ScottForster

We travelled from HCM to Danang by train. The soft sleepers were more expensive but we had all meals B & L, air conditioning, a sheet and blankets and a comfortable nights sleep great scenery and no horn honking. We arrived clean and refreshed.

Trains

by ak47uk

At every stop along the way people get on with all sorts of food and drink for you to buy so you dont have to bother taking any with you unless you are a bit wary of what you eat. One lady got on at a station with a cooking pot on top of a burning fire carried on a long pole in an instance the carrage was full of smoke but nobody took any notice, we decided to have some which cost us $1 for 2 full bags, it was delicious but to this day we don't know what we ate because no one on the train spoke English. The windows on the carrages are covered in wire mesh and you find out why as you travel through the countryside as the local youngsters pelt the train with stones as you go by. The toilets on the trains are mostly a hole in the floor and get filthy and smelly after a while. Women should try and empty before they travel but for men they can always do what the Vietnamese men do and thats...

Cyclo

by 34N118W

Well Vietnam is certainly too big to get around in a cylco, but it's a relaxing way to get around its cities. A tour of the city should be about 50,000 dong. No doubt they will ask for double. Do your best to bargain. You may have little luck in tourist areas, as they're used to receiving more than the average.

xe buyt, xe ome, xe lua or thuyen >> ?????

by chefgrad

No matter how you travel in Vietnam it's garaunteed to be a unique experience! Wether you travel by bus, motorbike, train, boat or plane be ready for a trip apart from the usual. --------------------------------------------------------------------------Travelling with the city:Depending on the size, you can take a taxi (if you're willing to take the longer way :), but more quickly), Xe ome (quick, cheap and easy), bike for smaller cities.. or just walk!Short distance travels (between cities): take a bus or rented vehicle. Long distance:Sometimes a must for trains (view my travelogues for more insight on this). A bus is manageble and for the more adventurest a moped is fun fun fun!Extremely long distant travel: (eg from hanoi to saigon.. vice versa) a plane can be very, very time saving. A bus direct from Ha noi to Saigon makes many stops on the way and a train is not that much cheaper...

CYCLO : typical Vietnamese pedicab

by sunnywong

CYCLO:A ride in a cyclo or pedicab, like riding a tuk tuk in Bangkok, is one of those must-dos when you visit Vietnam. There are thousands of cyclo drivers that can be hired by the hour or by kilometer. Most cyclo drivers in the south speak a little English. They can be indispensable guides and good sources of historical information. A nice way to tour a city is to rent a cyclo. You can pick up a cyclo along any main street almost any time of the day. It is essential to bargain with cyclo drivers. As a rule, half their first offer and work up. When you settle on a price, be sure you have exact change.

Walking is the best way

by worm_star

Since it's really quite a busy traffic in Vietnam because of the motorcycles, the best way to get around is by walking. Well, of course i'm talking about HCMC. Despite the busy traffic, it's really safe to cross the road. You don't have to avoid the motorists, they will avoid YOU. The honking may sound disturbing but it's actually a way of them saying like, "excuse me, coming through" in a ... say... louder way. =) ... so don't start swearing!

Singapore Airlines and Cathay...

by MSelva

Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific are my personal favorites. Singapore goes via Singapore from New York and California and Cathay Pacific goes via Hong Kong from New York and CaliforniaAir Viet Nam - it is good - they have many new airbuses. Also, the train goes from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City - but it is only for the 'Intrepid' traveler. You can rent a car with a driver (foreigners CAN NOT drive cars) - When traveling to more remote areas - 4-wheel drive vehicles are available. In Hue bicycles are great - motor bikes are good only if you are used to driving one.
