airplane is likely to be the most used way to get to vietnamI only tried buses and planes. Planes are less expensive than in europe and the best way to run around fast (remember to keep care of your luggage ticket as you'll be asked it to exit the airport).Busses are quite slow but fine (in my experience) and not expensive at all. Train are definitely slow and said to be something like a nightmare. unfortunately in the transport development plan only highway are plannedif you have un international driving licence, a car or a motorbike should probably be the best way to see the country out of the touristic spot

Head for the coast.

by jio

Curious little towns and villages play cards together, waiting for something to happen. Real Vietnamese culture here. A stare, a glimse. Who knows what will happen. I found myself in 'Mui Ne' armwrestling the locals while negotiating to buy some bread. Funny that. The South China Sea guards well. Very few tourists seem to make the trip. Reason enough?

Getting There: If u want visit VN and you are living in US or Canada or Europe ,Australia then u have to buy ticket through Vietnamese travel agency for low cost and easy way b/c have to apply visa on Vietnamese embasy to allow you get in .And flight always connect in 2nd country such as Japan,Korea,China,Taiwan,Malaysia ...No direct flight go to VN yet. Getting Around: -If U live in US ,Canada or other country that never use to with small moto = call HON DA .So use taxi or Xich Lo for convinience. -If u use to drive no line require u can rent a small moto or bike to go around . But be aware VN is country not obey the law and drive as crazy,no line ,go everywhere have empty spot that they can get through. No side walk for peolple waliking either ,so just book the tour and the bus will stop in front of your hotel pick you up. We flew into Ho Chi Minh City...

by wendy_2000

We flew into Ho Chi Minh City and out of Hanoi. Before going, we had read horror stories of customs officials both entering and leaving the country, but we had no problems. As we were on a tour, all of our transport was organised for us. The travelling between the main places was done by bus and yes, you will not believe the state of highway 1!We had one overnight 'experience' on the Reunification Express from Hue to Hanoi - definitely worth doing although beware of the inevitable delays, and make sure you take your own food for the journey. In the cities, walking is the best way of seeing the sights and soaking up the atmosphere - just keeping walking when crossing the road and the traffic will avoid you. Cyclos and taxis are the cheap and easy alternative around town.

Between the main places of the tourist trail, you can trvale by bus, train and plane (usual). Bus is dirt cheap, but the roads can be really bumpy. Train can be busy a few days in advance, especially the ones with the soft sleepers. Plane is fine, tickets vary in price, but a 1 hour flight will cost about USD 50.

In the cities, cyclo´s are a good option to get around. You shouldn´t pay more than 10.000-15.000 (15000 = 1 USD)dong for a short ride (up to 3 km). Motorbikes are ok as well, but you see a lot less on the back of a bike than in the cyclo.

Fly into Saigon (HCMC) or Hanoi. We flew Business Deluxe with Eva Air. It was well worth it. Excellent service, the seats reclined like no others we'd seen. Ah! Great airlines.Taxis are ok, buses go from town to town with stops along the way. Trains can go the whole length! I recommend a train from Hanoi to Lao Cai. Get a sleeper. Get a blanket!!! I don't care if they are hard to find, you won't regret it!There aren't many, if any rental-car places in Vietnam.

As a rough guide on distance costs by the open bus.Hue - Hoi An - 140Kms - 6hrs U.S.$3.00Hoi An - Nha Trang - 530Kms - 10hrs $8.00Nha Trang - Saigon - 450kms - 9hrs $8.00Danang - Hanoi - Air $70.00 U.S one way.Alternatively you can hire a bike with a local driver and tour the sights independtly. The locals also know the good spots that may not be on the tourist route.Cyclo is also handy and convenient for the shorter trips.

For those that haven't really got a lot of time.

by Rox

For those that haven't really planned a trip to Vietnam if you happen to be in Bangkok, this is a good place to purchase cheap tickets and you can travel almost straight away, as long as you have the Visa. The distances are not all that long but the time it takes to go the distance is. A suggestion that if you are not on a tight budget the longer distances are best tackled by air It is a little on the expensive side but worth the time saved. The train to be truthfull is not really all that comfortable, but ok to get you where you need to go. The open bus is great and cheap but I recommend only for the shorter distances, and not forgetting the cyclo used to transport everything... also great for getting your bearings when you first arrive anywhere.
