We were fortunate by using a government flight from the US. But several carriers have frequent trips and tours that may be more flexible to your schedule.Rent a jeep, or any four-wheel drive vehicle with lots of road clearance. (more is better). Make sure it has a good security system and a spare tire. Armor is optional but may be useful. Again, take a helicopter, and, make sure you ride in a bicycle cart. Boats and pleasure craft abound in rivers and canals, don't miss an opportunity to try it.

by exchangeafew

I WOULD NOT recommend driving in Ho Chi Minh city. The number of motorbikes is simply not believable and there really dont seem to be any rules. I must admit, I only saw one accident in my time there, but I wouldnt have lasted a day if I were driving. This is a shot of the worship service at one of the temples I visited.

HOME MADE TRUCKS

by dayfiel

the beauty of this type of transport is that you make it yourself. If you can't be bothered building your own ,you could get a ride on one by helping the driver unload his haul of wet coal dust. Could be converted to a motor home with the addition of a sheet of iron on the tray back for a roof.

by Merrell

The cheapest and fastest (besides flying of course)to get around Viet Nam is by bus. You can purchase a pass from Saigon to Hanoi and you can get on and off at all the 'must see' spots along the way! I took the train from Hue to Hanoi and I don't know that it was any better than the bus! The train is very slow in Viet Nam and it seemed that all forms of travel were uncomfortably hot. Although I was there during the summer!

From Hanoi to Hue by train: A long 16-hours ride (slower train) but beautiful scenery. I had a hard-sleeper bed but it was quite comfortable. The fare (US$17) includes breakfast and lunch (see photo)!

From Saigon (Vietnam) to Phnom Phen (Cambodia):Buy bus ticket from Shin Cafe or BK Brothers. Cost:US$6. Bus from Saigon to Moc Bai (Vietnam border) was in good condition. But from border to Phnom Phen, we have to change bus because we have to use local registered bus. That bus was in bad condition. The luggages at the back of the bus kept falling down and hitting the passengers at the back. The A/C did not work properly also.

by Michael_S

Hanoi Airport to hotel: Outside arrival terminal, there are mini-buses going to town for $2-3 per person. $2 will get you to Vietnam Airline office. $3 will get you to your hotel.Saigon Aiport to hotel: DON'T negotiate with anyone that approaches you for a fixed taxi price to town! Take the meter-taxi instead. If you go to District 1, it should cost no more than 70,000 Dong (about US$5).

In order to visit the Vietnam in freedom, you can take the bus;Buy a one way ticket open (max 25$) it will carry to you from Hanoi - Nam Dinh -Vihn - Huè - Danang - Hoi An (the charming country) - Nha Trang - Dalat - to Ho Chi Min. You can come down and go up from the bus, everywhere and whenever you want. The bus is not comfortable; but if you are one traveller, you can to do without comfort.

If you're up for real adventure, and in the area, get the bus from Savanakhet (Laos) to Hué. The main drawback is you start in central Vietnam, so you double back from North to South, but I enjoyed Hué, so that was fine.If you don't enjoy being bounced around on a road that appears to have been recently bombed, or having some Lao-lao's feet in your face, and anothers head on your shoulder, or competing for space with a Hitachi fridge, then fly into Hanoi. The simplest and best value for your money are the cafe End-to-end buses; Sihn Cafe, AtoZ Queen's Cafe, in Hanoi are good places to start, but you'll find loads of other competition to choose from. Though the standards are all the same, and no-one can guarantee you'll get a smooth ride every time.If you wanna travel by train, it isn't any faster than the bus, though you can get up and walk around, and use the loo. I recomend to travel...
