I flew from Bangkok to Saigon,...

by Arjen2001

I flew from Bangkok to Saigon, went by train from Saigon to Nha Trang, by minibus (aargh) from Nha Trang to Hoi An and from Hoi An (Danang) in 22 hours by train to Hanoi. Then flew back to Bangkok from Hanoi.Getting around, one of the greatest things there is :) Take public transport as much as you can, don't get on that stuffed organized tourist tourbus, but take the 3rd class train. Though you pay more then the Vietnamese, it's fun to start conversations with you phrasebook.

the best is flying in if you come from overseas. If you come from countrys around Vietnam, try to get a bus or train, you will see a lot more of the country. It's very difficult to travel in Vietnam. You are not allowed to take public transport (but you can try it, it's a nice way to travel with locals). There are 2 big travelagents in Vietnam, Sinhcafe and Kimcafe. Almost all toerist travel with their buses.http://www.vietnamtourism.com/e_pages/tourist/company/01_vietnamopentour/open_to r/i_fr_otour.htm

From Saigon, we traveled to...

by travelmad478

From Saigon, we traveled to Nha Trang and onward to Danang by train. This was a bracing experience, to say the least. Getting tickets was not an easy task: our Saigon hotelkeeper bought them for the Saigon-Nha Trang leg, but we went to the Nha Trang train station to buy tickets to Danang ourselves. There is just one train that travels up the coast from Saigon northward--and it generally fills up in Saigon. So buying a ticket between two intermediate points was very challenging, and took two days to accomplish--as we argued with a very reluctant Nha Trang ticket agent the whole time. We ended up with second-class tickets to Danang, an 11-hour ride that was far and away the most uncomfortable travel experience that I have ever had. It was one of those journeys that was so awful that there was nothing to do about it but laugh and wait for it to be over. We lived to tell the tale...barely....

To leave Hoi An, we took a taxi to Danang and then flew back to Saigon with Vietnam Airlines. While at Danang airport waiting for our flight, we were a little sad to see that most of the planes coming through were rather aged Soviet aircraft. (Of course, since my friend and I had both lived in the former Soviet Union for three years and taken innumerable flights on these planes, we weren't all that agitated by the prospect of sitting in another one.) So imagine our happy surprise when we got to our plane and discovered that it was a brand-new Airbus 320! We had a great flight.

by LAOWAI

The best way to get somewhere in Asia is to stay where you are. And forget about sitting on the ground- NO ONE does that. So, just do the Asian Squat. After 7 years, I can finally do it flat footed and I find that when my bus comes, I'm so comfortable (stuck) I don't want to go anywhere.

I arrived in Vietnam by bus...

by Jillworld

I arrived in Vietnam by bus through the border at Cao Treo in the hills. The border crossing was no problem, just be sure to have your 30-day visa organised in advance. I exited Vietnam to Cambodia by bus at Moc Bai, outside Ho Chi Minh City.Throughout Vietnam I travelled by a variety of means. I did a few overnight train trips which I found quite tolerable with the exception of the food served on board. Try and spend the extra for a soft sleeper - you are generally sharing a four bed area with other travellers, but as usual, keep an eye on your things, and don't be afraid of a little dirt! I also did some short bus trips. Buses tend to be cheaper than trains by quite a bit, but not nearly as comfy for sleeping - as a rule you will be travelling at night, as Vietnam from north to south is quite a distance! I also did one quick flight to save some time...just to give you an idea, a one...

by Jillworld

See this picture??? Get used to it! In all major Vietnamese cities/towns this is the amount of traffic you will encounter on the streets. It takes a good measure of courage in the beginning to cross roads - you just have to walk through and trust that the bikes will not hit you - it is almost more dangerous to hesitate as they anticipate you to keep moving. You really have to concentrate though, it is a dangerous task! If you would rather not walk, you won't have trouble finding a man to take you on his motorbike or cyclo. Be sure to have an idea of how much distances cost, and settle the price before getting on. Motorcycle is by far the best way to get around cities, and I got quite comfortable with it in the end...amazing how even things like hair-raising bike rides can become mundane if you get through enough of them!

Se déplacer au Vietnam peut ...

by Jean_Yves

by BorderHopper

I've flown both China Air and Korean Air to Vietnam. Departing from the US you must fly through another country because there are no direct flights to Tan Son Nhat airport in HCMC. I've found both Korea and China Air to be the cheapest averaging $600-$700 USD for a round trip flight. The cheapest way to arrange and purchase tickets is by contacting an agency in the Vietnamese community. In the Los Angeles area there are many different travel agencies speacializing in this region located in Montebello, Alhambra, and Santa Ana.Contact Binh who is a Vietnamese-American agent located at 1402 E. Valley Blvd. Alhambra, California. His buisness phone number is 1-(626)282-0336. Cheap flights can also be arranged in Bangkok, Thailand. It is also possible to overland from Thailand via Cambodia. There are several direct bus services that run the route or you can go at yourself but that may take a...

I have tried all...

by Eberhard

I have tried all transportation means (except that you can rent a car only with driver and I did not dare to rent a motorbike myself)- in-country flights, reasonable prices, but often booked completely- train, punctual, clean and if you go for an air conditioned four bed compartment it is almost as expensive as a flight- bus, you normally can use only tourist buses, the smaller one may have hard seats and no air condition, and it is normal that there is no space left (plus luggage)- Motorbikes I recommend for all shorter tours, especially instead of a taxi in the cities. They wait for you at any corner, they move still in the heaviest traffic and they are cheap. Do not forget to negotiate the price in advance
