The reunification express.

by cachaseiro

The reunification express is one of the great train journeys of this world, linking Hanoi and Saigon. As i am writing this in february 2011 this is stil, a fairly old fashioned train with simple compartments and a very old fashioned dining car, but it´s cheap and the scenery is just the same as if you had taken a luxury train. And the vietnamese can still afford it, so you have way more locals than tourists on the train. The journey takes somewhere between 30 and 45 hours depending on what train you take. The price for a ticket including a sleeper compartment is around 65 US dollars as i am writing now and you should try to reserve at least a couple of days in advance.I took the train on new years eve as we enterd 2011 and i thought it was a mighty good trip.

Take your bicycle to Vietnam

by cachaseiro

Cycling Vietnam is a great alternative to the more traditional ways of travelling.Bikes can be rented in many places and since many vietnamese people cycle themselves, the people are used to them on the roads and that makes it safer to cycle.Be aware though that the traffic can be very heavy in some parts of Vietnam, so try and prepare yourself a bit before undertaking a longer trip.I have twice tour cycled several hundred kilometers through Vietnam and can only recommend it.

Open bus tours - inexpensive and flexible

by tampa_shawn

Open bus tours of Vietnam is very popular with the backpacking crowd. The prices are amazingly inexpensive…less than $50 from one end of Vietnam to the other. Traveling this way gives you quite a bit of flexibility since you choose where to stop and how long you stay at each location. The bus also makes short stops at in-between tourist attractions. We took the leg from Hoi Ann to Hue and it made 30 minute stops at Marble Mountain (we really needed about 2 hours there) and a scenic overpass. The bus also stops for meal and bathroom breaks. The places the bus stops are normally shops/restaurants that have large clean bathrooms. The shops often include handcrafter work and we went to were reasonably priced. The proceeds of many of these shops benefit the handicapped. When you have extra time these stops are also great places to get pictures of the countryside. Several backpackers told us...

Driving in Vietnam for tourists or Expats

by dirtypierreontour

Some facts about driving in Vietnam for foreigners. You need a VN licence which I have and it took me 1 month of tests etc to get it although it only cost me 30,000vnd. But according to the Vietnamese Govt website if you have an accident and someone is injured and you dont have a VN licence its 10yrs jail. If you have an accident and someone is killed its 20yrs jail if you dont have a valid VN licence. Now you know why I went to so much trouble to get my VN licence as I drive every day in Ho Chi Minh City. For visiting tourists its so much easier to hire a car with a driver and let him have the stress of driving in the traffic.

currency

by jb_the_international

i would advise to stick to dollars. if you have to rely on the locals to exhange your dollars to dong then you'll lose all day. Just ask for a dollar price and negotiate from there. Dong is nice and looks good but it will bite you. Dollar is excepted everywhere in this country

FERRY

by mtncorg

With so many rivers, ferries and hydrofoils play a big role in transportation in Vietnam. From Saigon, hydrofoils shunt people off into the Mekong Delta or off to the beach at Vung Tau. What is more fun is to watch the little ferries moving across the Saigon River delivering never-ending hordes of motor scooters from one side of the river to the other. A new underwater tunnel is under construction between Districts 1 and 2, but the mopeds will probably continue to scoot across on the little ferries.

HIGHWAY ONE

by mtncorg

Highway 1 runs from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City directly through Hue. This, along with the neighboring narrow-gauge single track rail line, is the most important transportation link in the country. It is said that there is no discernible method to the traffic system in Vietnam, but compared to India or Nepal things seem downright disciplined. Like most of Asia, the horn is constantly used both in warning and sometimes just for the heck of it. There are 86 million people living in Vietnam and wisely the country makes it very difficult for families to own cars. If they used cars instead of motor scooter, chaos would sink the country in lieu of a infrastructure.Driving on Highway 1 day after day, I found it amazing that the country could function on such a small road - this is after a lot of money has been sunk into improvements - where vehicles can rarely get out of third gear. I did see new...

Bus to Nanning/guilin-china

by no_second_chance

I'm sorry I can't give you the exact name of an agent. but, I just think you should not worry about it as almost any travel offices in Hanoi will offer you some tour to China. and if they happen not to have a package to Nanning and Guilin without Halong Bay stop, they may be able to customize you a tour. TNK Travel does offer customized tours with your choice of destinations. you may want to take a look at their site http://www.tnktravelvietnam.com/html/custom-trip.phpIt is probably more expensive this way, though.

1. FOODI think you have general ideas how cheap food is if you eat where locals go. in case you and your folks have weak stomach, you should not eat from vendors in streets. I went to a few restos around downtown last trip and was surprised to see their price and menus were just as much, if not cheaper than...let's say a franchise restaurant. I had a grilled salmon with a side as a main course with soft drinks that cost about $12 from New York dessert and coffee. bottom line: you will spend on food less than you would in your own country if you can enjoy Vietnamese food. If not, you won't spend more than what you usually spend in your fatherland. 2. Airlinesyes you should book in advance no matter where you fly to because I have experienced that the sooner I book, the better deal I get. I usually book 2 months in advance. And besides Vietnamairlines, you can also book from Jetstar...but...
