Your own wheels..

by Durfun

Vietnam, having a long coastal road running the length of the country, can be fun biking. The main cities are bad traffic-wise, eg Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, etc, but highways, suburbs, and small towns like Hue, Hoi An, Muine, Dalat, etc are great.Perfect way of beating the heat & humidity, as long as you have a straw hat & sunglasses :)Hire charges are very reasonable, like 6USD for a day (2006) in Vietnam. I rented motorbikes & absolutely loved it.

Fly or Bus?

by Stepwalk

For traveling around Vietnam the flights are regular and inexpensive these days with Jetstar Pacific competing with Vietnam Airlines but if you’re on a tight budget you can’t go past the Open Tour buses. These modern air-conditioned and comfortable buses run from Saigon to Hanoi and most popular points in between at very competitive prices. For example, the cost from Saigon to Hanoi is around US$45 but you can get off at any stopping point along the way and rejoin the bus at your leisure some days or weeks later!

Overnight Trains in Vietnam

by austbear

We were travelling as a family of four - and used overnight trains [soft sleepers!! :-) ] on three occasions during our visit to Vietnam - from Denang to Hanoi, from Hanoi to Lao Cai (Sapa) and from Lao Cai back to Hanoi. We highly recommend using the overnight trains. They are cheap, comfortable and, if you are travelling in a group of four like we were, allow you to sleep soundly in your own secured cabin without any concern of someone rummaging through your gear while you are asleep...Most importantly, you don't waste precious daylight sitting in airport lounges and getting yourself from A to B - and there is so much to see and experience in Vietnam it would be such a waste to lose several days travelling.

Scooters

by chellie-h

When we were looking around we hired Scooters and it was the most fun.....We did try to get locals to take us but my husband 6'4 tall and he felt very uncomfortable on the back of a scooter so we hire our own.. I giggled all day. We headed out to China Beach and Marble Mountain had a fantastic day....

Sinh Cafe Sleeper bus

by yasminruth

The Sincafe busses are an excellent, comfortable and amazingly cheap way to travel thru Vietnam. From the south (HCMC) all the way up North (hanoi), it barely cost both my husband and me USD70 (per pax USD35). Planty of leg room and very clean!

Hanoi Airport - Taxi

by TaniaBeard

We arrived at the Airport, our first time in Vietnam & were a little taken aback by the local taxi drivers all lining up calling out for our attention.I had heard that you should use the airport taxi service rather than one of the local touts however my husband decided to go out for a cigarette & got a quote for a taxi to our destination at 1/2 the price of what the airport service offered! We had already paid for & received our voucher for the airport taxi however I wish we had of takent the touts offer.Having said that the airport taxi gave us free bottles of water & it was a really nice car...

Sinh and Kim's 'Cheap But Excellent Tour'

by iwys

Most travellers buy an open bus ticket from either Sinh Cafe or Kim Cafe. They are great value, and the best way to see Vietnam on a budget. The Kim Cafe buses cover the following itineraries every day:Ho Chi Minh City-Mui Ne-Nha Trang-Hoi An-Hue-Hanoi for US$17Ho Chi Minh City-Dalat-Nha Trang-Hoi An-Hue-Hanoi for US$18They use 30 to 45-seat airconditioned buses and make stops at places of interest along the way, including beaches. So, have your swimming costume and towel handy. You can stop in any of the cities on the route for as long as you like. The only restriction is that the open tour ticket is not available during Tet.One disadvantage is that all of the buses seem to stop at the same places for refreshment breaks at the same time, so you may end up returning to the bus frustrated because you couldn't get served in the overcrowded restaurants. My advice, if you are hungry, is to...

Travel in Vietnam

by brucemoon

The comment that car hire can be dodgy is so true. Also, the comment that bus travel is the 'way to go' is also very good advice. The Vietnam gov't does not allow foreigners to hire a vehicle without a driver. The typical rates you'll be quoted are in the US$80-100 range per day. Check out http://www.ostamyy.com/car-rental/Vietnam.htm for more info.My wife & I used car/driver for longer trips where buses don't go. You're indicating routes where buses do go.What we did was hire a 110cc motorbike (scooter) in each of the places we visited - Dalat, Nha Trang, etc. - and 2 months ago we paid around d100,000 / day (US$7.70).Advice: take dong and only pay in cash. At the moment you can bargain down very easily as the credit crunch has really affected Vietnam - but again, only in cash and only in dong. But, in Vietnam that could easily change - they may now want US$'s. So, check out at Saigon...

Easy Rider

by Isz

Easy rider is the way to go for something different & unique experience. If you want to travel at your own pace & your own route then look no further. Book them early and let them know your plan. Especially if you want to start the tour somewhere else in Vietnam, other than Dalat. This is because most of them is based in Dalat. But the beauty of it is, you can start & end the tour pretty much anywhere in Vietnam.I hired a personal guide/easy rider during our trip in Vietnam. I must say that I was very lucky to get Hung (scimitar) as he is a genuinely nice guy, have a great local knowledge and always get out of his way to make sure we are always happy. One night, Me & my husband decided to skip dinner as we were very exhausted from a full on day. One hour later, Hung came by to our hotel to drop us some take away food. We offered to pay but he refused. The food was indeed very nice! What...
