Hoi An to Hue via Hai Van Pass: Bus or car

by cafank

For spectacular views make sure you get a bus which is going over the Hai Van Pass (North South Vietnam) and not through the tunnel. The trip around the coast and over the pass is just wonderful. Most buses will stop on top of the pass for you to take photos and wander up to the old fort and gun towers looking out over the sea and surrounding countryside. The trip going through the fairly new tunnel is quicker, and it is sort of exciting going through this long tunnel, but nowhere near as great for scenery.

Airport Taxi's HaNoi, HCMC

by cafank

HaNoi: There are two companies, Noi Bai taxi and Viet Thanh taxi. Both of them cost the same, about USD12 set price for a drive from the airport to hotels in the city centre (you should not pay more to the old quarter). HCMC: Metered taxis are available and they cost around US$5 set price for the drive to the joining hotels in city centre. At both airports there will be touts trying to get your booking as soon as you come through customs. Just keep walking until you get out of the departure lounge and you will then see the taxi ranks.

Visa on Arrival 2008

by cochinjew

SaigonThe visa processWhen I informed Nga, my Vietnamese friend that I might not be able to come to Vietnam because I was not going to be anywhere near a Vietnamese embassy to obtain a visa, she suggested that her friend could get me a visa on arrival. I sent her the details of my passport and within 24 hours I had the visa approved in my hands, sent to him by email. I made a copy of it for the agents at the boarding gate in Singapore. The cost was minimal, perhaps it was Nga’s friend, but the fee was ¼ of what is advertised on the websites. How the world has changed in the few years since 2000? Travelling to Vietnam entitled getting a visa, sending your passport to an office, photographs etc, but now it is reduced to a n electronic transaction. On arrival, you go to an office which says, visa on arrival. There were three or four guys in the older uniform, a greenish khaki with a hat from...

Getting around in Vietnam

by King_Golo

Getting around Vietnam can be quite an adventure. The country stretches over roughly 1800km from North to South but modern traffic infrastructure is scarce. When travelling north or south the whole way through, as most visitors do, you have three options:a) by planeb) by trainc) by busa) By plane:Of course this makes up the easiest and perhaps also most convenient way to get from Hanoi to HCMC or vice versa. However, it's also more expensive than the others. Several flights daily connect Vietnam's two big cities, and also smaller cities such as Da Nang, Hue, Da Lat and others can be reached conveniently. Prices for a Hanoi-HCMC flight start at 1,100000 VND (excluding fuel tax) - as of September 28th, 2008. The flight time is 1h45m.b) By train:Taking the train is an adventure in Vietnam, but also a nice way to see the country (at least through the train windows). There's only one main...

Hello,If you can go with the local bus from Hochiminh City to town ( which town ?), the price will be much cheaper. One place I recommend you is Long An Lake in Bien Hoa City, 30 km far from Hochimninh City. HCMC airport taxi

by JonnyVN

If your pick-up doesn't arrive there is a taxi rank once you get out of the airport, they will definately know the hotel. The trip is around 90,000VND (about $5.50 you'll need to change some dollars at the airport) takes 25 mins depending on traffic. Just make sure the taxi puts the meter on, some will still try to give you flat rate, stick to the meter.Jonny

Cruise Chau Doc - Phnom Penh

by hientonkin

Go on a 3 day trip from Saigon down to Can Tho and then Chau Doc, then on a express boat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh on the 4rd day. It's OK boat, comfortable enough. I remember i paid around 10-15$ for an express one (dont go with slow boat,I remembered it didnt look very nice). It takes about 5-6 hours including the time for making visa on arrival at the border. if you are budget traveller, contact TNK Travel in Saigon or Sinh Balo, those who organise the package or the seperate services to Phnom Penh. For a nicer cruise, contact Blue Cruiser , price from 50 - 55$/person, running time 4h30min.

Overcrowding as standard.

by Tellme

While there are checkpoints around Vietnam to ensure that local bus operators are not dangerously overcrowding their vehicles you'll probably find that the farther you are from a main city, the more lax the regulating is. Tourist buses (seating and sleeper variety) will not have people in excess of seats, but may not arrive at the destination at the time you were told when you bought the ticket. My one experience of this was a bus from to Hoi An arriving only 5hrs later than it should have. (Avoid the Camel Tour Company!)

Flights to Siem Reap

by cochinjew

The flight, six or seven per day is with Vietnam Airlines, a very short flight but comfortable. it is about 125 usd one way. eventhough it might appear pricier , it is quite worth it when you think of the time saved and also the conditons of the roads and the hassles with the touts at every stop. I recommend Vietnam Airlines very highly
