Buses around Vietnam

I've been to most of the places in Vietnam except Pleiku and Mekong Delta but they were on different trips.From HCMC to Hoi An and back to HCMC by the central highlands (Pleiku & Dalat) and assuming one is staying two nights for each place, one may need to standby around 10 to 11 days including travelling by bus.The distances may seem to be short but the travelling time will be a long because of the road condition and speed limit.

Visa on Arrival in Vietnam

The tour agencies charge a fee for their service, something like 25 to 30 usd per visa on arrival, if you can get it cheaper, well and good. you have to pay the visa fee in addition to the govt at the airport. if you are not near a viet embassy or consulate, this is a fine and convenient way to do it. you send the agency your details from passport and a scanned picture and they send a visa approval from viet govt within two days. and you present that when you board. since you are boarding in siem reap and if you are flying to hochiminh you will get the visa on arrival at the airport there. i have gotten viet visas in various places on earth, and lately a friend of mine arranges visa on arrival for me and everything has become easy and without any beaurocratic shuffle.

Check-in at Hue Airport

For passenger convenience, I suggest arriving at Hue Airport well ahead of schedule. Despite being there early, we waited an interminable period of time to check-in for our Vietnam Airlines flight to Hanoi. A big problem seemed to be tour groups, which badly stretched airport staff resources.

Cyclos and Exhaust fumes

Being on a cyclo is certainly a quaint way of discovering town and enjoying the sights, scents, and sounds of HCMC. However, HCMC has its fair share of traffic, smog and lots of vehicle exhausts. Therefore, being stuck in traffic looking into the tailpipe of a large tourbus and inhaling plumes of smoke is something to definitively avoid. Do as the locals do and get yourselves one of those facemasks that help make the polution a bit easier to bear before going out on an "open-air" tour through HCMC.

dont expect to sleep

either from north or south u can book a bus with tickets to jump off at the major stops.the cost of this is so cheap and the best way financially.buses are full with us tourists although u may find they also do pack in locals and this can be so irratting.The driver and his co driver are usually rude.buses are always late and the bus journeys are noisy due to the driver constantly pressing the horn every and i mean every 30 secs.stops to the roadside cafes are not ideal for us ,more leaned towards locals and overpriced so stock up if u can before heading off.making the overnight journey is good to save u on accomodation,but take some good sleeping pills and u will be fine.

Walking in Saigon

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is a small city. Mostly tourists are walking around the city.I suggest also to walk than to ride a cab with a "bugos" (dishonest) driver.From your Hotel going to Airport, ask your hotel to call "VINA TAXI" color yellow, with telephonenumber 811-1111 (if i'm not mistaken, i almost forgot the number - sorry) but am sure the hotel attendants know VINA TAXIFrom The City (backpackers area) to Airport is only 5 usd. (approx)

Walk with Confidence

Walking in traffic in Saigon is like taking your life into God's hands because of the large number of motor bikes. When crossing the street you may as was well forget waiting for a clear spot (nothing like in the States). Step into the gap, walk with confidence and for heaven sake don't weave or change your speed. This at least gives the traffic around you a chance to weave around you.

Vietnam is a country on the move, so it's easy to get to places or around places. All sorts of transportation are provided - though some are better than others.Between cities: There are local or tourist buses, both not exactly comfortable... tourist buses are sad, especially those who stop for visits... it's like being a part of a package tour. They are very cheap, though. HCM to Hanoi is less than 30 dollars, and you can stop en-route as long as you want.Planes are cheap and save you a lot of time, usually they cost about 50 dollars a stretch. I flew Vietnam airlines all the time and found it excellent. Pacific has some routes, too - but I never travelled with themWithin cities: Roadwise: taxis are a safe option but when stuck in traffic (as it is often the case) the ride can be quite long. Take the bus and buy separate tickets

To get from city to city, take a bus. Buses are cleaner and cheaper than the Unification Express (train), and go just as fast. They can be uncomfortable, but if you go from North to South, they'll be less crowded, because more tourists go in the other direction. Price is totally negotiable and all companies are pretty much the same, so if you have the stamina, you might save a couple of bucks a trip. You can save money by buying your entire route in advance (you can decide how long you want to stay once you get where you're going - you just have to pick the route first.) BEWARE, however, that if you change even one leg you'll probably lose more than you saved. Unless you're positive, buy separate tickets. Also, on the overnight buses, wear a light t-shirt and bring something heavier. You'll alternatively freeze and sweat. No, it's not a fever, it's VNBE (Vietnamese Bus Environment).
